I could care less about this dumb statue - I'm from the North. I'm afraid of the chain reaction that is already happening before our eyes, however (with other statues around the country). I understand you shouldn't keep things just because they're historical, but at the same time, we have to keep reminders around us. The Robert E Lee statue reminded us of several things - one of which was very negative and terrible, but you shouldn't try and forget the guy. You're not going to remove the dark pages of this country's history. They're permanent. Thankfully, in today's society, we have righted that wrong.

I was most surprised about the humor and how not cheesy it was. My wife and I both laughed multiple times while watching with the kid.

I used to feel the same way you do, that it was wrong for people to think certain things, that it was my duty to help guide people to rise above their ignorance and intolerance. That I didn't have the time of day for people that couldn't put things like gender and race past them. But I found out people aren't necessarily that simple, and when we try to forget our past evils we often repeat them.

It's not my place to try to make people understand. I don't care what they do, so long as they're not hurting others without sufficient reason or forcing people to do what they want, or don't want, to do. Yes, it's great when people can put aside differences and work together. But I acknowledge that people are multidimensional, we're not entirely composed of good and happy things. We all have things like anger, and hate, and that's not something we should be ashamed of. We will feel anger and hate, it's a part of what makes us human. And I'm not going to go on some crusade to force people to be tolerant. It's not my ethical duty to get people to stop being intolerant, it's my ethical duty to ensure people are allowed to be intolerant within reason. Dissent is critical to a democracy. Without it, we're not one.

So there you go. I didn't have to prove anything about myself to you, but there it is. I don't care if you call me something, because it's your right to do so. Just don't tell me how to feel and think, because I'm not going to tell you.
