TopicFast food workers strike for $15 minimum wage.

They are not being inclusive enough and it's gonna backfire.

Many people can agree that min wage is not a current living wage, but the truth is that 50% of people working in the US right now make less then $15 an hour.

That range is pretty large though with the Fed min wage still being $7.25 an hour.

There are tons and tons of skilled labor jobs that pay less then $15 an hour, many require schooling or training to achieve, and that isn't even counting all the jobs in there that Started at say $10 an hour and after 10+ years are not finally getting up to $13+ an hour.

A straight jump of minimum wage basically is a big middle finger to a large portion of that 50% of working americans who have slowly increased how much they make over years, or went to college for a job, or a vocational school, or just got a license etc that required spending money.

In my area (Olympia Wa), we jumped to $11 an hour, and suddenly every single job paid as much as skilled caregivers (requires training + $500+ dollars for the license) and a ton of other skilled jobs.

So no, a flat minimum wage increase of such a large amount will not a good solution.

A flat percentage increase of all non-salaried positions under $20 an hour (up to a max of $20 an hour), would be a better thing to strive for. Along with that though min you can pay for a salaried position would also need to go up (just not by 20%).

Still not a perfect solution, but way better then the total train wreck that just doubling the minimum wage across the board would be.

Um, bog. Jen, you look just like my friend in real life named Jen in that pic lol. She is the wife of the guy that runs our DnD game every other Sunday.

I mean I know her sisters, and you can't be one of them, but that is eerie. None of your other pics I have seen look like that either, it's the different hair style/color etc.

Total trip. Not gonna post her picture here without her consent...but you have a semi twin out here in Washington.

Let's see. From the top of my head:

Not changing socks each day - I can go days wearing the same socks. Sometimes even underwear.

*I do this too, I usually use underwear twice before switching (Depends if I did something that made me sweat etc)....I sometimes go 3 days with the same socks)*

Smoking - Although I'm currently trying vaping and haven't smoked in two weeks.

*Not me, never started as I figured it was a waste of money*

Poor sleeping - I hardly sleep it seems

*Used to have this problem, have gotten better in general here though*

Not washing my hands when using the toilet - I've been improving on this front but still not perfect

*I always wash for #2, but not always for #1 (but I always wash before cooking etc). I sit down to pee though (just habit from being married and not needing to worry about raising/lowering the seat), so there isn't really much reason to wash after that for a guy*

Swearing - I enjoy it.

*I'm actually trying to swear more now, since I'm not teaching. Years of teaching Elementary broke me of any swearing habit, but now I can again*

Drinking Tea - I drink way too much so no surprise I have a high caffeine intake. This and the nicotine probably ties into my sleepless nights and shakes.

*Sorry, I can in no way understand or condone considering drinking tea as a bad habbit*

I skip breakfast - Probably not a good thing.

*I don't like eggs, and have mostly skipped breakfast throughout my life, when I'm being healthy I try and force myself to eat something, but in times like now, I just say screw it.*

Spending too much time online - See above.

*Meh, not really a bad habit if it's not getting in the way of things you should be doing.
I spend a ton of time online, but still get what needs to be done, done, so it's not a bad habbit for me*

I think I could get behind that,wolfy42. Something needs to be done about prisons for sure.

Prisons are a nightmare on every level at this point. We are heading towards 40k per person per year now (average, more in some places less in others), and what is worse, that is lost money (IE, not put into circulation, taxed etc).

You could give 10k a year to 4 people, for every person in prison right now. That would all be taxable (over the base deductions) and the money would be spent on things (That are in turn taxed etc) and bolster the economy.

So basically if the take the inmate out (still giving him $10k as well though), that is 3 more people that can get $10k a year.

Obviously not all inmates could be released, but if only the really dangerous ones where kept (and even they where put into a prison that let them generate income, produce...since they wouldn't be as crowded anymore), you could seriously make things way better for everyone.

No reason prisons (if you have far less inmates) can't actually generate income and even pay for themselves mostly. You just can't do it with the massive populations we have in this country.

Honestly I do think we need something as a bare backbone for each US citizen to receive to live on at this point, but implementing it in a fair way would be crazy hard to set up.

Crime costs us way too much, prisons are a huge drain etc. I suggest the following.

Everyone in jail for drug related (non-violent etc) charges are released. Drugs are now legal and taxes everywhere in the US. Prostitution is also legal and taxed across the US.

Personal Tax deductions are increased to 15k per person (30k if married).

Every US Citizen regardless of age is given $500 a month, this is taken out of any taxes owed first though, and this counts towards taxable income as well. For those who pay taxes, this can actually be held and removed from taxes at the end of the year, allowing you to just get a check for whatever is left over.

All income flat across the board (after expenses and deductables with the standard 10% minimum tax on total income still applying) is taxed at a flat rate of 40% for everyone, over and above your individual deduction.

With that 40% setup that pretty much means that you won't pay taxes at all, on the first $2000 you make a month (The $500 would cover the taxes you would normally pay).

The $500 replaces food stamps, and most goverment assitance programs (not medical though). It does not replace social security though, which is in addition to the $500.

Someone working min wage, 40 hours a week would now net about $10 an hour base, or $1600 a month, and with the $500 would have about $2100 to spend per month (enough to live just fine almost anywhere in the US).

Waaaay less people would end up in Jail. More taxes over all would be collected (by a fairly large amount if the states taxing pot are anything to go by).

It would be a start, and I think we could pull it off without increasing the deficit at all, and maybe start dropping it down. Considering that most of my friends currently making over $200k a year pay less then 30% in taxes right now, that alone would make up for the difference anyway (and my friends are not even asshats working the system to pay as little as possible).

Total base cost for where I live including taxes, mortgage, HoA and sending 1k to the co-owner per month is $2300. I have 4 roomates right now though, so am actually only paying $700.

It's a 2800 sqft 2 story home with 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 2 large livings rooms, a dining room, huge kitchen, pantry the size of most bedrooms, walk in closet, large garage, huge basement, 2 patios with views of Pugent sound, a large laundry room (could actually use that as another bedroom but yeah, not going there). It has a second mini-kitchen/bar downstairs as well.

If I didn't co-own it, and just payed the expenses it would actually only be costing me $500 a month for taxes and $780 for the Mortgage, along with $400 for the HoA, so about $1700 base.

They could?

You can detonate nuclear warheads midair. They don't activate when they hit the ground.

Yes, I could with a toy retrofitted from the 80s, but don't you think that technology is a bit beyond them?

They are behind, but not nearly as behind as you would think, they are not at China's level, but remember...well to me at least, it seems like just yesterday that China was WAY behind everyone else technologically. There is no way they could not detonate one in the air, we did over japan all those years ago, and they certainly can now.

Wait shit I realized this was about the UK not NK
now im worried lol

Well it should be noted that NK has been testing nukes since like 2005 or something. That being said, this last test is a huge jump in power over previous ones, which isn't a good thing at all. They had a like 50 megaton bomb back in the 60's or so (Russia) that in theory could have been a 100 megaton bomb, so yeah, NK could probably get up to that range eventually as well. Not exactly sure why we invaded the middle east over the possibility of nukes and have not done anything about NK even though we know they have them (perhaps due to china backing them?).

Whatever, it's been just NK testing nuked for over a decade, so we should totally have anti-missile defense systems around by now. Maybe we do, but only in this direction?

Here is a site that talks about why you would want to detonate them at altitude, and why the ones we fired were actually detonated that way.

The altitude, if I understand correctly, that is optimal for a nuke increases in direct proportion to the yield of the nuke. Higher the yield, higher the altitude for optimal effect.

Considering that a 120 kilo nuke (what we infer NK has), is about 10x the power of the nukes used on japan last time, the altitude for optimal effectiveness would be seriously high, basically meaning you would actually not see any reduction in effectiveness by detonating it at any height pretty much, in fact the higher the better.

Why was it allowed to get near Japan let alone fly over it?

Because it wasn't going to hit Japan. Even if it was a Tsar Bomba it wouldn't matter, NK is so bent it'd never hit anything.

Thing is, it's been theorized that nukes may be more dangerous/deadly if they explode at a higher altitude (radiation will hit a larger radius, heat/fire will burn further etc), so if NK did send a nuke with a destruct code, they could have set if off over Japan, even though it wasn't going to actually land/hit there.

I just wouldn't wanna risk having a possibly nuclear missile flying over me if I had any way of stopping it.

It was fun, went with a friend (much younger then me) and he had girls all over him (he's a bit of an introvert so he was loving it). Tons of people there all hanging out chatting etc. We are probably gonna do it again next weekend (and many of us are meeting up for Trivia night this Wed at charlies bar and grill).

Not many from my group (nerd herd) showed, so I didn't really know anyone there (just one or two I had met casually before), but it didn't matter.

Totally glad I went even if it was freaking hot for the first few hours. Plenty of beer and poor molly ended up having enough food left over to feed a small army (like everyone brought a package of hotdogs at least...she has like 20 packages now).

Getting back was a bit dangerous as it was really dark, but I didn't feel like sleeping over and camping out. I could do it in a pinch, but not if I don't have to.

Anyway short version is.....it was fun:)

The real question is, what the heck is up with the anti-missile defenses?

We are supposed to have them, and so should many other major countries, including Japan/China etc.

The missile that flew over Japan could have been, it seems at this point, a 120 kiloton bomb, 10x as powerful as the last ones that hit it.

Why was it allowed to get near Japan let alone fly over it? Heck why don't other major countries have subs/boats etc surrounding NK so they can shoot down missiles right away if they are launched?

Also, in a cosmic funny, I was talking to someone in the Army yesterday at a party who just got back from deployment and he was going on about how NK was no threat at all and we have it totally under control. Dude must have some egg on his face after getting home lol.

I'm a teacher so yeah, under 18 thing is a bit worse from my perspective then most, as I see them as kids, and our responsibility to take care of them, provide them safety and teach them. So someone over 30 dating a student of mine would not be ok with me.

Not everyone may feel that way, but there really should be some kind of age limit. I realize legally in some places it's 16, and there are many mature 16 year olds (I had already graduated HS by 16 and been working jobs since I was 11), but still, at least for girls (since there can be so many consequences for them), I think 18 should be the min.

We had a recurring order plan, and my wife was in the hospital for 3 months before passing away. I didn't cancel the plan (had other things on my mind), until over a month after she passed away. Even before that she wasn't drinking coffee (or eating much for two weeks).

We got 5 boxes every 2 weeks (4 coffee for her...she loved coffee, and 1 tea for me), so 8 per month.

So over the 6 months that was about 46 boxes. I've given some away and my roomates have used a bunch, so Ionly have 32 boxes left.

The eventually expire so I need to sell them now, before they do.

Amazon though sells them for $21 each, I'll post em up for $20 (1$ less then the next lowest), and hopefully end up getting $630 total for them (more then I initially paid as I got a discount through kuerig and got them for only $15 each).

Would have just been happy trading them in for Teas ($11 a box), but this would be way better. I could like buy a switch or something with the extra money and still get a ton of Tea boxes.

I don't think daredevil will bone JJ, even though I like the idea. I'm actually looking forward to her season 2, I've grown to like her more as LK and IF had their disappointing seasons.

I would prefer just DD and JJ seasons in the future, with LK and IF only being guest stars and in the Defender episodes personally. That and Punisher as well of course.

LK just doesn't do it for me, it wasn't horrible (like IF) but I think he works better as a guest star and not a primary character personally. He would be fun long term if he gets into it with JJ and especially if Squirrel Girl shows up.

IF should just be put in a coma or something, I think everyone would like applaud and love the season of any of the shows that ends up with him out of the picture for awhile. Maybe have him be horribly disfigured and have to wear the IF mask, and have another actor play him in the future or something. Seriously, he just detracts from the rest, don't even like his sidekick.

DD is still great but yeah, fire the writes for foggy etc in defenders, and get back on track with the team. Season 1 was awesome, season 2 was great, defenders was totally different in how almost all the characters acted (even Matt was kinda more wimpy/whinny etc).

Maybe it was the writers for IF taking over or something, if so, kill them off:)

I posted on Let it Go, but they removed them saying you can't sell perishable products. I posted on Craigslist so they may sell there.

I am thinking about going with Amazon though, they have a pay as you go plan $1 per item you sell), and the amounts are much higher.

A box of 5 of the belvita's go for $18 (so almost 4$ each), and the Kuerigs are going for $21 a box (6$ more then I paid for them!!).

Not sure if I only get amazon credit for them or what, but even so, thats way more then I was asking on craigslist/let it go.

Any other suggestions for places to sell? Amazon seems like the best deal by far. Was hoping to get $300 total out of all of them, but with Amazon I could end up getting an insane $700 + (20 a box for 32 boxes of coffee, and 7 * 18 for the Belvita's...of another 120 or so.......$740 total. Even with the -1$ per box sold that would be $700+.

Just ask people going in if they will let you buy the item with store credit and give you cash. Best if you just have a friend that will do that for you, but put the word out and you'll probably find someone that is going to buy something from the store, and will let you use your credit.

I can see why going solo would be a bit awkward. Back in the day (high school/early twenties) everybody pretty much knew everyone else so showing up to a party on your own wasn't an issue.

Do you think anybody you know will be there? Even if not, and depending on your mood, you should consider going.

So maybe show up for an hour and see if you get a good vibe or find someone to pair up with. If you're not feeling it, say thanks to the host and head home.

Yeah, looks like 1 friend at least will be going with me so won't be too bad. I woulda gone anyway (Got together a few party games to bring (Mars Attacks and Dirty Minds), along with snacks etc, and i'm a pretty social/friendly person so I'm sure it woulda worked out.

I went to an Anime convention once by myself (well, I didn't actually go the the convention, I went to watch Ballet with my wife across the street and it was so boring I left and hit the convention instead), and yeah, it's really not fun solo.

Don't want the same experience at this party.

But I'll have a friend and I do casually know a few other people who will be there (but they are really young (under 21) and will probably be hanging out with other people around their age.

When I was in my 20's it was pretty easy to just go and hang with new people but once you hit 50 or so, even though I have plenty of friends in their mid to late 20's, it's not as easy just randomly getting to know them at parties etc.

So glad I'll have someone along with me (especially since he's like 29 or something so makes a good age bridge between me and younger people lol).

Just go. If you go and don't like it/feel awkward, then leave early. If you stay home, you'll never know if you would have enjoyed yourself.

Yeah, I guess it's pretty pathetic if I don't go just cause of the 30 minute drive. Still hoping one or two of my friends will come along. Nothing is as much fun without friends. I mean, I could still mingle meet new people, but at least I'd have some friends to hang with. Now that i'm playing MtG again we could bring decks etc.

Hell if my DnD group had actually gotten together to come we could have even played there if we got bored or later tonight (party is going all night).

Always hated just hanging around, why I never did the bar scene much.

But whatever, your right, might as well go and give it a try. Got an hour till I need to leave, gonna check on the last 2 friends one last time.

Sounds like a good song to me.

Broke my hand on a pineapple,

I didn't even care.

I was playing fruit ninja,

In my underwear.

Decided to try real fruit,

I started with a pair.

The apple, just exploded,

after launching through the air.

But the pinapple was too hard.

It didn't break in two.

So whatever, is what I say.

It's time for round two!!

So yeah, havn't gone to one in ages, but there is one starting in a few hours here, that will go all night till tomorrow.

New girl named Molly moved into the area and is throwing a party at her place. She lives on the lake, has a big fire pit, and plenty of room for camping out etc.

Thing is, I invited 8 of my friends to go, but as the week went on, pretty much all of them flaked (might have 1 or 2 come that I havn't talked to yet), so looks like I would be going by myself.

Chatted with molly a bit online, and she seems cool, and would like to meet her, but not sure on going to a random party (sure she is going to be busy with so many people), without any friends with me (it's not that close like 30 mins away).

So, to those of you who have gone to randomparties in the last 30 years, tons of things have changed in that time, do people even go to these things solo anymore? I mean, we usually all went with friends back in the 80's 90s even, and now with internet/phones etc, I could be like the only dude going solo at this point lol.

Planning on bringing some chicken thighs/hot dogs/beers with me (It's BYoB/C/F (beverage/chair/floaties for the lake), and chips as well. Just not sure if I should bother going solo or not (stupid friends all bailing on me grrr).

It's scary to think about how many cops get away with what that brave nurse wouldn't let him illegally do. If he doesn't get fired it'll encourage it to happen a lot more

His job is to protect and serve, and instead of protecting her, he assaulted her. It shows his mentality over his job is completely wrong and he should not be allowed to continue to have power over others in any way.

If you don't fire him, put him on a desk job or something, but ensure he has no power over citizens again. Nobody would vote for him to be in that position and honestly that should be a central requirement for any police officer. If a vote was taken, hire police officers that average citizens would vote for. Don't hire asshats that will make everyone's lives worse.

Also need to stop writing tickets for minor infractions (5mph over the speed limit, 1 inch too far from the curse etc). Do not make up the money needed to run the police department by screwing over people, just tax more etc, but the current system gets average people angry at the cops too often (which is counter productive).

Cops should be there to help us, make everyone feel safer, and deal with serious criminals. They should not be out to find any reason to fine/charge average citizens that are just living and maybe not following the letter of the law here or there.

Also think drugs should be legal across the board (obviously not while driving), and same with prostitution.

Fix the system so everyone is working together and trusts each other. Get decent people in the police force and get rid of any assholes (or at least keep em away from citizens).

Do that and crime would probably go WAY down, people would be happier, there would be more taxes to pay for everything (Tax drugs/prostitution) and things like this video would stop happening all together.

But yeah, it won't happen, sadly.

Best bet at that price range is to try and buy a used one from someone who is upgrading, as it will at least be able to play most games for now and the near future.

I have not seen laptops I would bother with for less then about $700 or so, my current one was on sale for $900 from $1300 or something, it plays everything fine, but won't work for VR now or in the future (even though it was advertised as being able to).

So be careful what you get. You can get crap that will just play the Sims pretty cheap, but honestly just a bit more and it would actually play just about anything. Totally worth the extra price.

He should both be fired, and arrested and forced to sit in jail for as long as she was as well.

Total asshat.

No, it isn't.

What happened to being richer and more experienced giving you power over people?

Some people like to date others who have power over them, more power though. Both guys and girls can get off on that. There is nothing wrong with it if both parties are adults (over 18), and I guess in some states it's legal even at a younger age.

But yeah 18+, if someone wants to date another person who has control over them, more power, is dominant etc, more power to them (or to their partner I guess heh).

It just happens a lot more in some ages than for others.

And that scale is basically persistent all the way to death so if you set the AoC to 30 then 32 year olds would be seen as much more exploitable than 60 year olds.

People can look like they are in their 40's now, even when in their 60's (like my friend).

He's married now to a 30 year old chick, who looks like she is in her 40's (she is oriental, which is strange cause usually they look much younger).

Honestly if you look at em together you wouldn't know which one was older right off the bat.

Same goes for chicks though, I know tons in their 50's who could easily be in their 30's at this point. Would be way easy for them to date a guy in his 20's and it would seem normal/fine.

The whole age range of 30-60 at this point can be a real pain to identify. This means a 25 year old can date a 55 year old and it would look just the same as if they where dating a 30 year old.

So yeah, age range is all screwed up it seems. Sometimes a person who is younger seems like the one that is too old in a relationship lol.
