Given the amount of time and effort probably put into it, is there any reason why you didn't just write a book instead? I kinda don't get something this long-term.

Because it's not the same thing?
You're running the game and playing with other people...your friends. And while it's cooperative (at least, it's supposed to be...), people are unpredictable, so the players will always be thinking of something clever that you hadn't considered, or be pitifully clueless and miss an obvious solution and thus make things much harder on themselves than necessary. It's fun in its own way. Not sure how else to explain it.

And that's just the story / role playing side. When it comes to combat...it varies by DM. But for me...I genuinely don't want the player characters to die, then they might switch for a new character and all the story built up around the prior character is gone. At the same time, nothing is worse than players knowing they're immortal and ceasing to care about "threats." So you have to kind of walk a tight rope...taking them just to the brink of defeat and putting the fear of death in their hearts, but they come out victorious in the end. (of course, there's some wiggle room, like if they realize early they're doomed and can escape, or if I subtly start using non-ideal tactics if it seems I made the fight too hard...otherwise it'd be impossible to pull off for hundreds of encounters)

Evil games are cool, but I've had some bad experiences. Usually will only play in them if the DM takes steps to ensure there won't be backstabbing, petty theft from other PCs, etc... Cause it just gets really irksome really fast. Being "vitriolic best buds" where the evil PCs insult and mock each other and come juuuuuuust short of coming to blows is really fun, though.

I hear DM's basically play way more than the players because they're constantly planning and thinking about things. It's like a daily thing, almost.

This is true. And not just for the story and NPCs and stuff. The freaking rules are what do my head in every time.
Here's a picture of my second monitor when all was said and done (we play online).
https://image.prntscr.com/image/7c40b139b70e479996441e6cc1cf2dc9.png
Every single one of the spells on those guys' lists has paragraphs and paragraphs of explanation. And I just ran a fight where the party faced 4 of these spellcasters. And I had to make sure to use all of their spells coherently to provide a good challenge. Which took forever to learn.

Seriously, **** spellcasters so much. >.>

I'm pretty relieved it's over. I did this campaign immediately after a different year-long campaign, so I am nothing if not burnt out.
Which frequently spells the end of the group, so it's super rad that one of the players was willing to GM next.

Tell me about it! My game's 3 1/2 years old now, and they just hit level 17 (started at level 3). Got a Druid, Psion, Warmage, and Cleric in the party (and also two non-casters) and damn has combat slowed to a crawl the last few levels! Now combats often take 1 hour per combat round, it's unbearable, but I'm not sure what I can do to fix it this deep into the campaign.

And yeah, it's a daily thing. Designing enemies for them to fight and battle maps is of course a lot of work. But if you have an idea for a plot and want to work it in gradually over time and drip-feed some foreshadowing, it's a lot of thought just to know what the players should hear and when and what's too much info / too soon, and not contradicting yourself (though in some cases, NPCs may be wrong or misled and thus give incorrect info they think is right and then you have to rationalize who should know what and...argh!).

I enjoy it, but I'll be relieved when the campaign's over. If I ever run a campaign again...I'm banning most of the casters. I tried to use carrot and stick method w/o being heavy-handed (giving improvements to noncasters and nerfing a lot of spells and caster prestige classes) and they still went 2/3 caster on me. Never again.

I'd like to think we've at least learned from the incident and grown as a society. Much as the Titanic sinking lead to safety codes to ensure enough lifeboats for all passengers on a ship, Harambe's unjust murder has also inspired change.

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/parents-girl-snatched-sea-lion-blame-port-chief-n762936

Accusing them of "reckless behavior," Robert Kiesman of the Steveston Harbour Authority said the girl's parents put her in harm's way.

"You certainly shouldn't be letting your girl sit on the edge of the dock with her dress hanging down after the sea lion has already snapped at her once, " Kiesman said in an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

*wipes a tear from eye* We've grown so much....that statement is just beautiful. If only the park officials that killed Harambe had the courage to place the blame on the parents, where it belonged.

It's pretty much impossible to be worse than Andrew Jackson. If Trump initiates a nuclear holocaust, I guess that would do it. But I doubt even he'd do that and am hopeful the military itself would refuse to carry it out if he tried.

But 2nd worst is still wide open! If it turns out the allegations are true and he's basically a puppet of Putin, that alone would probably do it, even aside from any horrible policy decisions or actions he's taken.

Dominos is great now. Really delicious, and they have the best topping choices (even feta cheese!).

Pizza Hut is ok, always has been. Nothing amazing or awful, just ok.

Haven't tried Little Caesar's since the rebirth, but I remember the old LC being even worse than old Dominos, so I have little urge to try them again.

Papa Johns is the absolute worst. Tastes fucking terrible and the most expensive because their customers are dumb enough to think price = quality.
Also, while I hate their pizza on its own merits, the owner is also a shit human being, who complained that Obamacare would force him to raise the price of a large pizza by 14 whole cents, just so his employees could have healthcare (ignoring that none of the main pizza chains offered it, so they'd have to raise prices, too and it'd come out a wash). Even if you were against Obamacare, surely you agree that anyone whose chief complaint against it is a 14 cent pizza price hike is just a scumbag.

I agree w/ everything you said, overpriced, gaudy design, horrible food (that was my first "Margherita pizza" and it convinced me that such pizzas are disgusting and I avoided trying any others for years), even the bathrooms sucked.

I don't care for Olive Garden either, though. My Italian chain guilty pleasure is Romano's Macaroni Grill, though it's uncommon to find one anymore. Although, full disclosure: I'm not that big on Italian in general, seems like nearly everyone else considers it their favorite cuisine.

I really hate how it's reported merely as "body slamming" when it's been verified by eye witnesses -- Fox News reporters of all people -- that after slamming the reporter (which I'm skeptical, but *could* have been in self defense of some sort), Gianforte then got on top of the reporter and repeatedly punched him, which is pretty blatant and severe assault and battery.
What a joke that he's only charged w/ one misdemeanor and it's questionable if he'll even go to jail! A normal person pulled that shit in front of witnesses, he'd get at least 5 years, no question.

I understand he won b/c a ton of early votes had already been cast, but it's disgusting that early voters who asked to change their vote were denied. That should not be. You should be able to submit a request to change a vote by the day of the election or earlier, specifically for cases like this.
Still wouldn't have helped if he had beaten someone up next week instead, but it'd at least close the time gap between early voting and actual end of elections.

EDIT: I forgot that he filed a false report of what happened. That should bring charges, too. But it won't. He's not even going to get jail time.

The reason Ryan is terrifying is I believe he is the republican most likely to make big legislative accomplishments. And given that republicans in congress are all trying to be cartoon villains it's bad.

Pence might be slightly less accomplished at the task, but he's quite competent himself, and has prior legislative experience. And his agenda would be far worse than even Ryan's.

In any case, the Dems should want a long, thorough process that gathers as much evidence and documentation as possible both to quash as much bs about it being an unjust witch hunt as possible (some will never care about facts, but at least avoid angering those who somewhat do) and to stave off time till after 2018 so that by then enough dirt can be found on Pence's campaign involvement to take him out of office as well and to regain the House majority.
Regaining Congress needs to be their top focus, the Trump sideshow should just be gently pushed along to make sure the investigation continues (since Trump and many congressional Repubs would love to have it fade away)

The top 5 states for SNAP are California, Florida, Texas, NY, and Illinois. 3 are blue, 1 is red, and 1 is purple.

Top 5 in what way? Most people receiving? Most money spent on it (which is effectively the same as the previous metric)?

CA, TX, FL, and NY are the most populated states in the U.S. If every state had 10% of their populations getting SNAP, they'd have the most simply by scale.

Which states have the highest % of their populations getting SNAP benefits? That's the stat that actually matters for showing which ones "depend the most on it."

% of population is one indicator, but overall consumption is equally important. Plus you have benefits per person, which is another metric (where again blue states lead). There's no one perfect metric, but two key metrics go to blue.

Again, saying CA has the most poor people doesn't say much, it has the largest population in the U.S., so of course it does. So raw numbers of people in each state is a worthless metric, reinforced by the fact that 4 of the 5 top states for # of poor people also happen to be the 4 most populous states. I guess IL needs to get its shit together, though.

Consumption per person is also pretty meaningless. The higher the cost of living in an area, the more benefits a person will need just to get by, and blue states and urban (ie, blue) areas are the most expensive to live in.

What matters is % of the population that use SNAP.

No, not all religions preach the need to convert others, that's patently false. I consider the religions that put an impetus to convert others to be the worst, it always leads to forcing people to convert or die at worst and being an annoying pushy jerk at best. Yes, that includes Christianity. Leave me alone, I don't need you to "save me" or force your book of myths down my throat by encoding its proclamations into laws. If your religion leaves me the fuck alone, I don't mind it.

In any case, what this boils down to is that Christianity had an "Enlightenment" period where people gradually learned to not take that shit so seriously. Islam has not had such a movement, and it needs one badly.

In some ways, you could make that argument. You should elaborate on that analogy, because you might actually have a pretty insightful point. That, or you're just noting the superficial similarity and not actually thinking about it at all, but I'll still invite you to build on it.

While all lives of course matter, people saying Black Lives Matter are trying to create a discourse about a specific problem that's especially in need of addressing.

While most (not all...) religions are violent, some are far more violent than others. Currently, Islam in particular is the source of the vast majority of religious-inspired acts of violence and terror and it's a serious problem that needs to be addressed, so making the empty platitude and false equivalence that since other religions are all violent, they're equally so is just a ploy to kill the discussion.

Dear god, please let it be Jeff Sessions

I want him out of his position, too. But I really hope it's Pence, for Presidency succession reasons. If Pence doesn't go down, Trump cannot be impeached, even if he were found guilty of murder.

what

I'll break it down even more for you, so you can understand:

And man, woman, or child who falls any bit short of "fanatical far-right christian extremist" should be terrified of the prospect of a Pence presidency. So much so, that for the country as a whole, we'd be better off with a Donald Trump as president who has all his current flaws and ALSO turned out to be a convicted murderer.

I know he is not a murderer, I was simply trying to emphasize just how much of a calamity it would be if Pence ascended to the presidency.

I mean yeah pretty much. If you're really that shortsighted you kinda deserve to learn these lessons the hard way. Like children you throw tantrums and use childish memes to express your opinions. Not surprising from people that get their news from comedy central i suppose

Most people would consider the person happy that (if the allegations are found to be true) Russia successfully meddled in our electoral process and had our president in their fold just because it meant getting to stick it to "the left" to be the short-sighted one.

Really weird feeling when I'm in a topic agreeing 100% w/ Zeus and Shenti...

They (especially Zeus, good research) pretty much covered it already.
