Not a movie, but when Simon punches Rossiu in Gurren Lagann. It was freaking incredible, if you're into over the top anime stuff. It looks stupid as hell out of context, but as the culmination of three quarters of a season, it was absolutely perfect.

Not just in that it was over the top (though it was) but as a narrative element and the way it played into the themes of the show, it literally could not have been better.

Long story short, the show is about human spirit being capable of literally anything, and goes to outrageous extremes to demonstrate it. About 10-13 episodes prior, Simon and his mentor had recently developed an asymmetrical relationship when Simon begins to view his mentor as a rival who was winning, leading to self-doubt, leading to losing the battle. The Mentor then straightens him out with an over the top punch. Simon and Rossiu's relationship in the latter half of the series develops in exactly the same way, but with much higher stakes and a lot more complex, so Simon straightens him out in kind. It's a cyclical narrative structure that seems to prove the bad guy's point about the human spirit, but... GAAAAAAH I WISH I HAD TIME TO GUSH THIS SHOW IS SO FREAKING GOOD.

In a way, no. They have zero idea what the appeal is, and they still think it's literally 2600 design just with better graphics. You know those TV shows where it shows somebody playing Super Mario Bros with an Xbox commercial while generic sci-fi sounds come out of the screen and the player is spazzing out as if he's trying to to dodge stuff in the game IRL? They totally buy every second of it, lol.

I'm a way, yes. Because they know it's a waste of time.

I always assumed Darkwing, DuckTales and Talespin were all in the same universe BECAUSE of Launchpad.

DuckTales 2017 threw a wrench in that theory by repeatedly emphasizing that only DW himself actually belonged in universe, but I loved the way the did the origin story so damn much that I didn't care.

Like straight-up, that was one of the best written episodes of anything that I have ever seen.

Both of them (Lost Levels and Super Mario USA) are basically officially produced equivalents to rom hacks.

Lost Levels (The Japanese SMB 2) being a remake of the first game, only much harder and World 9 being a shout out to the glitches version of levels.

Super Mario USA (America's SMB 2) being a reskin of another game.

And just both of them making Luigi more distinct than Mario, plus being single player.
Both of things have elements of truth to them, but are not really the whole story.

It's true that Nintendo decided not to localize their SMB2 because it was deemed too difficult for American players, but this was determined by having one American play test it. The guy worked in a warehouse. It also wasn't the only reason. Japanese players didn't respond entirely favorably to it because it was too similar to its predecessor. And personally, I found the original much harder.

On the second point, Doki Doki Panic was kind of an honorary Mario game anyway. It was made by the same people who made SMB1, according to the same design philosophies. To the point that they actively changed direction a number of times to keep it from being a straight clone. SMB2 also isn't a straight reskin. There are a number of differences beyond graphics, including the ability to run, shrinking when getting hit and the omission of a progress tracker that spammed all four characters' progress to unlock the true ending.

The Count of Monte Cristo Jim Caviezel adaptation is legitimately bad, and loses sight of the source material.

not to say that an adaptation has to be identical to the source material, but this adaptation feels generic and soulless.

Caviezel also lacked charisma in the role.
To be fair, there's really no way to make a decent film adaptation of CoMC. It's about as long as Lord of the Rings, and needs every single word. You'd have to make it like a ten film series to even cover every chapter.

There actually is an abridged publication (maybe more than one) but it's an absolute mystery how.

So yes, open world games are harder to pull off well. And AAA game development is a race to the bottom, I am well aware. But why is the concept of closed worlds preferable to that of open worlds for so many? Is it just because the latter is easier to mess up?
No, it's just at a different point on the continuum between a puzzle and a sandbox. On the sandbox end, you're given more freedom, but your choices only have the meaning you give them. On the puzzle end, your options are more limited but you're rewarded for finding the solution.

Let me illustrate by comparing a similar encounter from three games from the same series: the tanks in Metal Gear, Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid V, in order from most closed to most open.

MG1's single tank fight involves a tank moving forward and back down a hallway, firing alternately from machine guns on each side. There's really only one solution. You have to wait for it to roll back and start firing from the other gun, run around the corner, place some mines and retreat to safety. The mines are the only weapon that will damage it, and you cannot use them from a distance. You cannot strafe it because of the buildings. You can't even time it differently because of the guns. And it's a lot of fun, because the solution is interesting, because it still takes skill to implement, and because the challenge affords the solution.

In MGS1, the tank is no longer between buildings, so we can strafe it to avoid gunfire if we want. But we still have no anti-tank weaponry except what we will improvise, and leaving cover will get us shot by the main cannon. So we must disable the cannon with chaff grenades, causing the gunner to open the hatch and fire the machine gun and buying you a few seconds to throw frag grenades in the hatch. It's a little more open, as you can approach it from a couple of different directions, and if you remember the mine trick from MG1, that actually does slow it down. And it's still a lot of fun.

Then in MGSV, there are tanks everywhere. And you shoot them. Lame. Or hell, don't even fight them. Double lame. They did, at least, give you an option you can unlock later in the game where you can sneak up on them and capture them. Which is also lame, especially when you actually pull it off.
