I'm a Fire Dragon, but I'd still probably go with Lightning.

If you're a fictional character with magic, lightning tends to give you more fine control than fire does, and with lightning you can usually blast your enemies without having to worry about setting everything else on fire. With lightning you can also theoretically go low-power and stun rather than kill, whereas fire really doesn't have much of a stun setting.

Plus, I know which of these two I'm relating to more:

Though if I had to pick a party from the list, Bull Moose is about the only one I can stand.

I might be willing to go with the Whigs (because the best US President ever was a member of that party), but there are still lunatic fringe offshoots of it still floating around in the US (and there's a revival party in the UK that started over the last decade or so), so I can't side with them because they technically still exist.

That's the point he's making.

It's a flawed point, though.

Using "To Kill A Mockingbird on a projector with the original film" or "War and Peace as a first edition" as examples ignores the fact that the only reason you can watch To Kill a Mockingbird on anything other than the original film reels or read War and Peace in later editions is because they're both continually reprinted or updated as new media evolves. But the same thing happens with games - in precisely the same way you might have a film reel copy of To Kill a Mockingbird, a VHS copy of To Kill a Mockingbird, and a DVD copy of To Kill a Mockingbird (and you need specific and unique hardware to play all of them, and none of them are cross-compatible), a popular game like, say, Halo gets released on the original Xbox, gets an updated port for the 360, gets released as part of the Master Chief Collection, and so on.

Combined with virtual libraries becoming more and more common on both consoles and services like Steam, and tons of past games are still perfectly available to modern players on modern systems even if you don't own the original hardware a game was on. And that's not even taking emulators into account.

Sure, there are games that eventually slip through the cracks, but that's true of every other media as well. For every To Kill a Mockingbird, there are tons of movies that don't get later updated releases (and which most people may have completely forgotten the existence of) - and there's a reason why this page exists:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lost_films

For every War and Peace that gets repeated in dozens of editions across 100+ years, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of books that will show up on bookshelves, disappear, and mostly are never to be seen again. Even many critically acclaimed (at time of release) books by extremely notable authors stop getting reprinted eventually, and modern readers may have no idea they ever existed (even now, this is a huge problem for fans of New Wave sci-fi from the 60s and 70s, which rarely gets reprinted).

We have a skewed view of how well media was preserved in the past because we really only remember the things that were preserved. Most of us have no idea just how many shows, films, or books were published before we were born that have simply vanished and will never be seen again. Or even ones that still exist, but which are relatively difficult for the average layperson to access without using archival means.

Games may have a greater rate of loss, and have unique aspects (like abandonware being a thing), but overall it's not that qualitatively different from any other form of media.

...though jokes aside, because Vega's one of the brightest stars in the sky, it tends to crop up in sci-fi a lot. And because it's a simple derivation, multiple stories use Vegan (pronounced Vey-gan rather than Vee-gan) to describe the inhabitants of that system.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Immortal

The term for a hardcore vegetarian was invented a little less than a century ago, but it didn't really start becoming all that popular in its own right until around 40 or so years ago. For most of the 50s, 60s, and 70s sci-fi writers probably wouldn't even have thought about the possible alternative definition (in the same way older stories take a while to start phasing out "gay" as a term for happiness after it became more and more exclusively associated with homosexuality).

You're assuming they possess sufficient psychic powers to automatically know the lazy guy is lazy.

Unless there's a tell-tale giveaway (like former employers listed for references who all complain about how lazy the person was), a potential employer isn't going to have any real way to detect something that intangible (at least not until after you've already been working for awhile). Unless you're literally walking into a job interview and going "Hey, heads up, if you hire me I'm totally going to half-ass any task you give me", they won't know you're going to screw them over until after you've screwed them over.

I generally assume that anyone that seems to die by falling in movies/TV will be revealed to be alive later if somebody decides it'll help the story.

"NO ONE'S EVER REALLY GONE A HYURP DERP!"

But yeah. They're crapping out content so hard and fast at this point (with absolutely no regard for quality) that the moment someone can talk Samuel L Jackson into it, we'll be getting the Mace Windu Disney+ show where it's revealed that he's been alive the whole time and living in hiding in the slums of Coruscant. But then decades later, when he's a bitter grumpy old man, he'll meet a plucky teen girl who will restore his faith in the Force and they'll go on adventures together.

We're already at the point where Yoda's "when gone am I, the last of the Jedi will you be" in Return of the Jedi is laughable horseshit. Because in Disney canon it seems like half the damned Jedi Order just faked their deaths and went into hiding and had tons of secret adventures.

At this point, the only way a character will ever really die for good is if their actor dies in real life. And even that might not be enough, if they just recast the role or use CGI to fill in for the actor.

RVallant posted...
9/10 that someone is wrong.

99% of what Disney has been doing with the Star Wars canon is wrong.

I always used to crap on the EU (and rightfully so), and praised Disney's decision to shitcan it - but they've proceeded to replace it with something far worse.

Arguably it's a problem with post-modernism and "pop culture eating itself", where today's writers lack life experience and mostly only grow up reading/watching pop culture entertainment, and thus lack the creativity to truly come up with new ideas rather than regurgitating or parasitically attaching themselves to old ideas (the same reason why retcons became such a popular storytelling device in comics, where every old story winds up getting retroactively ruined by shitty new writers). Way too much of today's content can basically be described as "telling the same story again, only worse". Or worse, replicating popular scenes and story-beats from older properties, without understanding why they worked in older properties, and thus cranking out stories no one enjoys and no one wants.

Let's be honest. If we ever meet aliens, we're going to come up with slang terms for them almost immediately, and they're going to do the same to us. So no one's going to worry about the official technical classifications for species when the Lizardmen of Algol-5 show up and all start calling us "Big Uglies". Even if it sounds all fancy in their language so none of us realize what they're actually calling us.

PikachuMaxwell posted...
In terms of astronomical bodies, hypothetical residents of Mars are called Martians, in Venus they are called Venusians. But what about the residents of Earth?

Depends on if you mean in general, scientifically, or in theoretical sci-fi.

The general go-to is just "humans". Earthlings if you want to go with the sci-fi assumption. Terrans if you're feeling fancy.

Realistically, if we ever managed to settle other planets or space colonies (which we almost certainly won't), you might get slang for people from "back home" as Homeworlders or Earthers or something like that, but as-is there's no real reason for the classification outside of sci-fi. And any terms sci-fi comes up with is going to be both non-official and non-standard.

PikachuMaxwell posted...
I think there's a problem with using "humans" though, because not all the residents of Earth are humans. Humans share the planet with millions of other species of lifeforms.

Yes, but no one gives a fuck about any of them.

SinisterSlay posted...
Sol, we are the Sol system. So we are Sol's?

Solarians is the usual go-to for any sci-fi story that uses Sol as our star's name, and then extrapolates a race name from it.

The real problem is that, if you do that, you're working from a flawed assumption. Sure, we might call a race from the Vega system Vegans or Vegarans or something. But that's because we're basing our name for them on our name for their star.

If there are aliens out there who would name us after our star (as opposed to our planet, or some other defining trait), they'd be naming us that after their name for our star. Which almost certainly isn't "Sol".

Meanwhile, it doesn't make much sense for us to call ourselves after our sun, because a) most of us don't call it "Sol" either, and b) because it feels much more natural to call ourselves after our planet.

You're gonna hate on Ancient Aliens? Really?

Yes.

And even more so on the people who watch it.

Ancient Aliens...doesn't seem inaccurate to me.

And that is precisely the problem.

Most of the time, if I see the show in passing, I will hear them present inaccurate or misleading information within the first minute or two of when I start listening. And when they're not straight up misrepresenting facts to support their distorted world-view, they're relying almost entirely on "weasel words" - phrases like "alien theorists suggest" or "is it possible that?" are used constantly (make it a drinking game and you'll be dead by the end of the show). Which is a rhetorical trick to suggest and imply things while still maintaining plausible deniability ("Well, I never said that, I just asked if it was possible."). The show is almost entirely constructed from outright lies and deliberately false implications. The few true facts they actually include are usually only part of a framework to make a later lie seem more plausible.

The problem is that the average viewer doesn't have the skill, experience, or body of knowledge to parse out what is factual and what is complete and utter bullshit (ie, most of it), so are completely incapable of differentiating between truth and lies. Which means they'll generally accept what they're told at face value, because they lack the context to perceive the misinformation.

It's the same issue with "documentaries" which are heavily biased or deliberately manipulative - people hear the word "documentary" and assume what they're being told must be true, when it's either deliberately deceptive or inaccurate by virtue of incompetence. Which means they accept what they're told as being factual when it isn't. Which leads to them to construct worldviews and assumptions which are blatantly incorrect, which in turn can affect any number of possible decisions or choices they make in their future lives.

And science has proven that humans tend to believe the first things they hear on a given subject, and actively become resistant to facts that contradict those assumptions even when they're presented with definitive and objective proof that the first thing they learned was wrong. And attempting to disprove a mistaken assumption actually tends to make people believe those things even more.

In other words, shows like Ancient Aliens actively make people more ignorant. Because it's metaphorically building a shell around your brain that keeps facts and accurate history from getting in, while marinading your brain in nonsense that changes how you see the world and your place in it for the worse.

It's basically the social media of the TV world.

Ancient Aliens, Oak Island, shows about cryptids, ghosts, the Bermuda Triangle, and basically any similar "THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE!!!!!!!!~!!" type shows.

Being a credulous idiot is bad. Believing stupid things because you watch crap shows and are incapable of doing your own research or thinking for yourself is bad. Allowing those shows to influence your worldview is bad. The mere existence of those shows causes a net negative effect on the collective IQ of the world - and there's barely enough IQ to go around as-is.

Stupid people suck.

Based on the aphorism "One death is a tragedy, a million deaths is just a statistic", I would generate one thousand statistics.

The amount of people not showering in the morning on that poll, now I get why you need axe body spray and incense at gamer conventions. >_>

Especially if the usual folklore that the average person supposedly sweats about a pint of sweat a night, even if you don't realize it (ie, not just people waking up with soaking wet sheets).

That's about 8 straight hours worth of stewing in your own juices even before you wake up for the day.

the chances that japan would bomb pearl harbor was also a very miniscule chance and yet

That's arguably like saying the EU is evil because it's basically run by the Germans, and the Germans were Nazis in WWII. Or that the French government today should be held responsible for all the murders during the Revolution.

Or more along the lines of the politics of this board, that Biden should be held 100% responsible for all of the actions and policies of Trump because they were both US Presidents.

Could also make the argument that no one on Earth should ever trust the US with nukes because not only are we the only nation that has ever used them, but throw because of all the natives we murdered and all those people we enslaved. Taken over time our government policies are pretty much a litany of atrocities.

Context and continuity of command absolutely needs to be taken into account when attempting to make sweeping generalizations.
