44. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars


Allow me to introduce you to my first RPG experience. I didn’t have anything against RPGs, really. I had just never played one before. The only reason I ended up picking this one up is because I love Mario games. Who would’ve guessed that putting Mario into an RPG would introduce new people to the genre, right? Anyway, this game holds a special place in my heart because it was my first RPG. It’s still a fun game to this day, too.

The story is a simple one. During yet another Mario vs. Bowser battle to rescue Princess Toadstool, a ridiculously large sword drops from the sky and slams into Bowser’s Keep, and the tremors from the impact send the three of them flying out of there. The sword also destroys the Star Road and scatters the pieces all across the Mushroom Kingdom. With the Star Road destroyed, people’s wishes can no longer be granted, so it’s up to Mario and crew to gather up the star pieces and chase out this foreign invader so peace can be restored. Like I said, the story is simple, but it’s also charming. It has a lot of memorable characters in it, too, including Booster, Johnny Jones, Boshi, Croco, and the Axem Rangers. Mallow and Geno are both really cool party members, but unlike most people, I always liked Mallow better (Fun Fact: I once got modded for spoilers without warning for saying that Mallow isn’t really a tadpole. I got it overturned, but still). This is probably the game where Bowser started coming into his own as a legitimately awesome character, too. He has some great dialogue, such as
“Like the moon over
The day, my genius and brawn
Are lost on these fools
~Haiku”

Mario RPG also has some really charming locations. I really enjoyed the Forest Maze and trying to find the secret treasures, along with the awesome music. Booster’s Tower is really fun with some interesting puzzles and a cool design. The Sunken Ship was fun and had some pretty challenging puzzles, too. I love Nimbus Land and the Barrel Volcano. Just the overall design of those places was fantastic. So yeah, the game is full of great settings.

The gameplay is pretty straightforward, but it’s fun. I love the concept of timed hits. More games should incorporate it. It keeps me engaged in the battle by trying to get the timing down for additional damage instead of pushing a button, sitting back, and waiting. You can also use it to defend enemy attacks and lessen damage. Plus, Mario RPG has some really cool boss fights, like Belome, who clones your party members by eating them. The Axem Rangers are pretty awesome bosses, too, but that goes without saying. You also get to fight a friggin’ wedding cake. How great is that! It also has some fun optional bosses like Jinx and Culex, complete with FFIV boss music remix. I actually pretty much solo’d Culex with Toadstool because of how ridiculous the Lazy Shell’s defense is, but it also took like 30 minutes because the Lazy Shell compensates for its defensive boost by lowering your attack, but still, it was fun.

I use every character in every battle so they all get AP. I do often like to take Kimahri down Rikku's path so I can get those abilities, but then he becomes physically weak and ultimately not that useful in battle once Rikku joins because now you just have two Rikkus. I'll usually send him down Wakka's path so he can have status effects and stuff.

But Kimahri has some understatedly cool moments in the game that I like.

Oooh, I forgot a cool Miranda moment that I didn't include in my writeup but originally meant to when I was thinking about it! If you romance Miranda and then talk to Liara about her on the Normandy in Lair of the Shadow Broker, she'll talk about how Miranda was so cold and businesslike when she first met her. Shepard replies that he doesn't think she's changed that much, but Liara tells him that she has. He has no idea how much he's changed her. That was really nice. Nobody in ME2 really epitomizes "Character slowly won over by the hero" better than Miranda, and that's one of the reasons I like her so much.

Butterfly catching is still the worst though. If those maps did not exist, I still would not have the Saturn Sigil to this day, over 10 years later. It probably wouldn't be THAT bad if the game didn't force you into a random encounter every time you messed up, but it does, so...

And even if you're one of those people who feels he has to do everything "naturally" (and if you are, more power to you. Enjoy the "satisfaction" of all that extra time wasted making things more irritating than they need to be!), then butterfly catching is STILL worse because there's no way I'm touching that piece of crap without those maps that have the exact routes to take outlined for me.

Lightning Dodging is tedious as all get out, but you can get it out of the way fairly quickly if you're prepared. No Encounters armor, there's a spot in the Thunder Plains that does three lightning strikes every five seconds, mute the TV so you don't have the chance to confuse thunder with some other noise, such as the background music. Every 25-50 dodges, pause the game and rest your eyes for about 30 seconds because if you're like me, you're straining them trying to dodge the lightning because you don't want to get struck by lightning in the middle of a blink.

Bam, if you do it right, it's done in 10-15 minutes. That being said, it's still tedious as can be and completely devoid of fun. I'm just saying it's not the worst Celestial Weapon quest.
