Yeah, Sphere Grid is better. Crystarium is a more simplified version because there aren't branching paths, you can't move over into someone else's area, etc.

But I still like that kind of system.

Do I need to play 1 to understand the story and such?

I wouldn't strictly say it's necessary because there isn't a lot that happens in UC1 that carries over into future games, but you'd probably get confused on some of the references and the history between the characters. The original is worth a play, and it's pretty short anyway.

what are the battle mechanics like in XIII?

FFXIII's battle system is ATB like most of the series, but your characters each have different "roles" they can use. Each character starts with three (out of a total of six, and no character has the same three beginning roles), but you can unlock the other three so all characters can use all six later in the game. Here are the six roles:

Commando - The straight up damage dealer physical attacker.
Ravager - The role for using offensive magic spells (also FFXIII has no MP, so you can use spells as much as you want)
Sentinel - Used for defense, learns abilities that greatly reduce damage and protects the party
Medic - Healer person, learns Cure stuff and Esuna stuff
Synergist - Uses party buffs, like Haste, Protect, Shell, etc.
Saboteur - Inflicts status anomalies on enemies like Blind, Poison, etc.

You can switch between roles at any time in a battle, so FFXIII's battles require a bit more strategy than most other games in the series. The leveling system is pretty similar to FFX's. Each party member has a Crystarium (think of a Sphere Grid, kind of), and after each battle you earn CP (Crystarium Points), and you can use those points to get stat boosts and learn abilities.

So yeah, lots of fun.

43. Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals


To be honest, when I first played this game, I didn’t have high hopes for it. I’d barely even heard of it before (mostly because it had been in the 2009 Games Contest). I remember making a topic on Board 8 a couple years ago asking for SNES game recommendations, and someone (I forget who exactly) suggested I give this one a try because they really liked it. Whoever it was, I must have respected their opinion enough to listen, because I ended up playing this game.

Really, Lufia II doesn’t do anything new or groundbreaking, but what it does, it does well. The story is a simple “Save the world” kind of plot, with a race known as the Sinistrals attempting to destroy it. The thing about the Sinistrals is that they’re HUMONGOUS, which makes trying to defeat them seem like quite a task, but that’s what I like about it. Give me a band of heroes trying to overcome something seemingly impossible like that, and we’re good to go. Plus, Lufia II has a really good soundtrack that contributes to its atmosphere, including some awesome battle music.

The gameplay for Lufia II was pretty fun, too. It’s kind of like what Zelda would be if it were actually an RPG. Most of the dungeons revolve around finding a particular item that will help you solve the puzzles and move on to the next area. For the most part, the puzzles are pretty challenging and get more difficult as the game progresses. Another cool thing is that Lufia II doesn’t have random battles. All enemies appear on the screen, and another nice touch is that they only move when you move, so you can completely avoid having a battle any time you just don’t feel like fighting, which is nice. You can also use the items you find in the dungeons to stun enemies. The battle system is pretty standard fare turn-based action, but your characters can use certain moves depending on what they are equipped with (sort of like FFIX, but you can’t permanently learn them like you can in IX). The game also has a primitive form of Limit Breaks, where you can unleash a powerful attack if you take enough damage.

I really like Lufia II’s characters, too. Maxim is a likable lead character, someone I was surprised I ended up liking as much as I did. The ending really caught me off guard when he died, and it was well done and emotionally touching. I certainly wasn’t expecting the game to kill off the lead male and lead female, as well as permanently injuring two of the other party members during the final battle. Not many video games have the guts to do that to their heroes, so the game definitely made an impact on me in that regard. Good game.

Yeah, I can understand it having the dual purpose if you're monster catching, but I generally like to focus on one thing at a time when it comes to stuff like this, so yeah, No Encounters for me.

43. Godot (Ace Attorney)

I just finished a playthrough of Trials & Tribulations last night, so this one should still be fresh in my mind! If there was one word to sum up Godot, it would be “cool.” I know his brand of “cool” doesn’t appeal to everyone, but if you’ll recall from my Ken Masters writeup, I am easily impressed by cool, so I’m sold. I enjoy his cool and often cryptic one-liners that may or may not actually make sense. Godot has some great dialogue. Perhaps my favorite is actually a reference to a well-known MGS quote.

Godot: You know what they say…”A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal!”
Phoenix: I believe the proper description of a cornered fox is “scared and petrified!”
Godot: …Your animal analogies have grown tiresome!

So good. One of the awesome things about Godot is the fact that he’s practically unflappable. His best “cool” moment occurs in 3-3 when Furio Tigre first takes the stand and he’s screaming and threatening everyone in sight, demanding to know who dragged him here, which causes the Judge, Maya, and Phoenix to try to hide under their desks from him. Then Godot slams his coffee mug on his desk and calmly says, “There’s no need to yell. We can all hear you. I’m the one who dragged you down here! You’ve been caught in a snare…The snare of the law, and there’s nothing you can do to get away!” That’s paraphrasing a bit, but that’s the gist. Regardless, it’s pretty darn cool.

In terms of his skills as a prosecutor, Godot’s a bit different from what we were used to with Edgeworth, Franziska, and Manfred von Karma. While they were determined to control the direction of the trial, Godot is a bit more laidback. He seems content to actually let Phoenix himself dictate the pace of the trial, while calling his bluffs and putting the pressure on him to provide evidence to support his claims. Some people criticize Godot for acting that way (particularly the end of 3-3 where he sits back and lets Phoenix bluff Tigre into admitting his guilt), but I personally think it fits his character and his purpose as a prosecutor. At the end of 3-5, Godot states that the reason he wanted to face Phoenix in court was to see for himself “what kind of man you were.” I think that’s why he’s willing to let Phoenix essentially run the trial because he’s trying to test him and get the measure of him. The only time where Godot really tries to control the trial is 3-5, and even that is because he’s trying to lead Phoenix into finding the truth.

Admittedly, Godot’s plot in 3-5 is sheer bullocks, but I do enjoy his backstory and his motivation for it, learning about his history with Mia and Dahlia in 3-4 and how he reveals all at the end of the game, especially as the song “The Bitter Taste of Truth” plays in the background. I really like it when his wound begins bleeding, and he reminds Phoenix that the color red doesn’t exist in his world, so these must be his tears because the only time a lawyer can cry is when it’s all over. Good stuff.
