I'm pretty sure that's only significantly true of reality television. But regardless, the importance of ratings are reliant on how hard it is to reach a target audience, not how many of that target audience actually watches. That's why the 18-49 ratings are the ones everyone primarily uses. People 50+ don't even matter to advertisers in prime time. It's not that people 50+ don't buy anything, it's just generally thought they can be reached with anything. That's why Harry's Law won't get renewed when it brings in 12+ million viewers.

you are right that reality tv is a big factor, but women watch more dramas too. I think networks are trying to make sitcoms more female friendly (ie, shows like whitney and two broke girls) since they know how much women watch tv as a whole. Its an untapped market for sitcoms.

I think it's really weird that NBC is giving Whitney the superstar treatment. That show was easily the most advertised new sitcom last fall, it got the best lead-in the network could offer, it was one of the first shows to get a full-season pickup... and even though its ratings have stayed weak, even after all that, it's getting a second season.

thats because whitney is one of the few sitcoms that NBC has is more aimed toward the female demographic.

Women watch more and more tv then men, cable and network. There is a reason why the two most popular new shows last fall were Two Broke Girls and New Girl.

NBC knows this, and they are trying to get that female viewership. They think Whitney gives them a better chance for getting the female viewers.

They literally said that it is not a game console months before release, and I remember people here going crazy saying that games are the only reason people will buy a PS3. Now you look at your friend's lists and everyone is watching Netflix. If it just played games, yeah $600 would be ridiculous. But for what it could do at the time, it was a bargain.

gonna have to disagree here. Even for at the time, it was nowhere near a bargain.

Spot on about sony tvs a few posts ago. By far the most overrated tv. Its a decent tv, but horrible when you factor in bang for your buck.

buffy's first 4 seasons were great. Season 5 was better than 6 and 7 (which i thought were pretty bad honstly). But seasons 5, 6 and 7 all had problems. Or i should just say a major problem.

It didnt really bother me though, the later seasons of buffy mighta been meh, but around that same time (2001/2002) angel started becoming really good.

Firefly is great, everyone knows this though. Anyone who has watched firefly/serenity and hasnt checked out the anime outlaw star should imo. Surprisingly similar imo.

Dollhouse isnt that good, but its still watchable and better than most crap on tv these days

Im not gonna lie, i prefer ATI right now over NVIDIA. I think the 6850 series is the best overall bang for your buck in the market right now. Hell they are probably even cheaper now then when i bought mine.

I also feel solid state drives are becoming increasingly valuable. They are still kinda expensive, but man do they speed up your PC. You dont need to install everything on it, but I'd consider putting any games you plan on playing regularly and windows (and any software like a photoshop or something).

If they make one MMO, itll be the end of their single player games. Probably not a good thing, but im all for an MMO to finally replace WoW. Hopefully its not a boring clone cash in.

While I can understand why people use the term "WoW clone" it's not like WoW was a terribly original model for an MMO or anything.

Also even clones can be successful. Rift is extremely like WoW. The pvp maps are basically the same, same 3 talent tree system, similar instanced dungeons, etc.

WoW wasn't a completely original model, but it was the first mass advertised MMO. It had a very dedicated userbase backing it (early 00s blizzard fans....nuff said), and it and EQ2 were the first major MMOs after high speed internet became the majority (2003/2004 ish)

Most importantly, it was very casual friendly from the start and only got more casual friendly.

Sears, Roebuck, and Co. - founded 1886
US Interstate system - built in the 50s.

Hmm....which caused which to be built?

thats not really a fair way to asses it. Sears was originally a mail order catalog, and didnt even have a major department store till 1933.

Sears also saw its largest amount of growth in the 50s and 60s when they first started placing stores in suburban areas.

I see the general argument of what you are saying, and there is some truth to it. But sears definitely saw benefits from the us interstate system. We don't owe our lives and luxuries to the gov't specifically, but we don't owe them to the corporation specifically either.

While this is true, I wasn't just talking about the padding. There is MUCH more regulation as to how a player can go after another these days; helmet-to-helmet hits, horse collar tackles, chop blocks, facemasks, late QB hits...all of these are things you could do in the game back in the day that you can't do now without getting penalized. As well, at least in recent years, concussions are being viewed as far more serious than they were, and as such players aren't coming back onto the field one week (or the same day!) after getting one like they used to.

I suppose it probably evens out in the end, but I still dispute the phrase that it's becoming increasingly dangerous.

i agree that concussions are being viewed more, thus causing people to think that its happening more. But some other things.

All of those things are very serious, some of the most serious injuries in football. And it does appear that the number of these infractions are declining a bit. But when I played high school ball, i remember my coach reading an article to us saying how the average NFL OL, RB, DL, TE, and LB takes the equivalent of about 5 car crashes a game. I really wish I still had that source.

The amount of increased penalties does not "even out in the end" of seeing guys like haloti ngata maul a QB/RB causing his head to bounce off the ground on a perfectly legal play.

Actually, football nowadays is a lot safer than it used to be (Still not good for your health or anything, of course). So saying it's becoming "increasingly dangerous" is a big misnomer.

If you really think football will ever die over players health, you're really overestimating how many people care that football players go through this kind of thing.

Actually, it is becoming increasingly dangerous.

Ray Lewis generates about 1000 pounds of force when sacking a QB. Guys like Jack Lambert and Jack Tatum (most feared hitters of the era) were wimps compared to today's LBs and Safeties. Due to the science of working out.

The game is faster than ever. Sure padding might be getting better, but the speed of the game is increasing faster than the technology of the speed of the prevention methods.

F = m*a. The average weight of a player is increasing, and the speed of the game is increasing.

And all three are still around; not "extinct".

Football is never, ever dying out. Become less popular? Sure, eventually. But it won't be because of concussions.

however those sports' decline was because of popularity decline to the general public

Football's death would be because its becoming increasingly dangerous for a players health.

people said the same thing about boxing and horse racing back when they (and baseball) were the big three sports. Hell baseball is pretty much becoming 3rd to the NBA now too.

both my parents did not support my decision to play high school football back in the early 00s. Because of the health issues. And this is at the high school level. After I finally got to start a few games my senior year, some of the hits made you feel like ****. And i must say again, this was at the high school level.

The game has evolved so much in the past 25 or so years due to things like the science of working out. Players in the earlier eras had huge health effects, and in the present we have linebackers who can generate hundreds or even thousands of pounds of force to make a tackle. Ya medicine is better, but not good enough.

I really can see the game going extinct if these mental issues that concussions can cause become very prominent.

RIP Seau. I feel really bad for him and his family right now.

time management is the most important thing you can learn in college. Took me four years, but i eventually got it.

Jobs that you do 40 hours a week and give you the ability to pretty much forget about work when you arent there are fine. Hell id argue they give you more free time than being a full time college student.

Jobs that make you do things when you get home (ie grading homework if you are a teacher or somethin) would piss me off though

EDIT: also sometimes i believe that "hour of sleep before midnight is worth 2 hours of sleep after midnight" thing you always hear. So going to bed at like 10pm would give you the "8 hours" from 10pm to 4am.

its kinda dick to the consumer to force people to have steam to play it, but part of that is accepted due to how we've moved to a service based economy and because of the piracy aspect.

Steam to me is great for indie titles and older games, but until i see cheaper prices for brand new titles, id rather just take the physical copy.

Burton's batman movies are cheesy, but they nowhere near compare to the spidermans. Especially two and three.

Everyone can feel free to think what they want. I'm just a firm believer that the marvel super hero movie blow up that we've seen starting around x-men 1 has in general been a bunch of boring action movies with a lot of special effects.

You're saying this cause Nostalgia Critic did that bit on it aren't you?

no, the only Nostalgia Critic stuff I enjoyed was surprisingly his history of the power rangers thing.

Your original statement didn't say Marvel, it said Superhero movies.

no it didnt. It said

"The only good marvel superhero movies are xmen 1 and 2. Possibly the first iron man"

Iron man. First Class. Thor. Captain America.

I said Iron man was decent. First Class didn't hit with me. Sorry. And im not sure how anyone could think Capt America was good. Id give it a 6/10 or so, but not "good".

I watched the first one again in March, I enjoyed it. I don't remember what 2 and 3 is like, but if you're the type of person to agree with this topic...

the first one is the best one. The 2nd and 3rd is when it turns into an entire cheese fest with things like MJ running in a wedding dress in slo-motion with a really bad smirk on her face, and spiderman crowd surfing. All three arent anything special though.
