2010 definitely had some great games. God of War 3, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Bayonetta, Heavy Rain, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Halo: Reach, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and I'm sure there's some other console heavy games I'm forgetting.

tbh, i see mostly "great games in a down year" type stuff there. Sorry.

I wasn't talking about JRPGs. I think there have been many great Japanese games this gen on consoles and portables (less on consoles versus last gen, more on portables versus last gen). It may not be as many, but it isn't "downhill" from here. Western games (retail as well as downloadable) have made up for any slack there may be from the Japanese side, though. It's all pretty good.

im not sure i agree there. Id even argue that the new trend of consoles having tons of western games is a bad idea, since PCs have been doing western games since the early 90s very well for the most part.

Why play morrowind/oblivion/Fallout 3 on a xbox when you can play it on the PC so much better? I dont like the trend of consoles being mostly western style games, i think consoles are trying to compete with PCs now, which is silly considering that these consoles are close to 5-6 years old now...and most people's PCs are maybe 3-4 years old max. Consoles shouldnt be trying to imitate PCs with their games. Its a recipe that will fail now that nintendo/sony/microsoft have no major interest in ending this gen.

It doesn't matter what the "top rated" Japanese games are, honestly. There have been some great Japanese games this generation, regardless of what the average score is on Game Rankings or Metacritic.

of course there are some amazing japanese games this gen, but if you think there is even a close amount this gen as the past....just no.

Sorry, but Persona 4 (although its arguably last gen) isnt enough to make this gen "amazing for jrpgs".

Eh, firelord, dark ranger and beastmaster were/are great too. A lot of people liked the naga too...though i never did.

Anyway, blizzard just needs to retire wow. The game has been stale for years now.

theres a few good DS RPGs, but most of them bore me, pokemon (nowadays) and golden sun especially. having Radiant Historia, TWEWY and DQ9 doesn't suddenly mean the whole genre is alive and kicking and better than ever.

eh, there is more than that for good DS RPGs. Try infinite space first off. The Dark Spire too is really old school. And if you like fanservice-esque jrpgs Super Robot Taisen Endless Frontier was pretty good, despite the series as a whole being pretty "meh". This all off the top of my head.

I do think its a cause for concern that the DS and PSP are the only two systems that have significant amounts of jrpgs though. Unless the future of gaming is handhelds and home consoles are on the way out...which is very arguable.

Im not sure how portal 2 took a risk, but LA Noire was pretty innovative.

I think you might just be anti-jrpg icehawk. You prefer western oriented titles. Thus a game like earthbound wont seem risky to you. Id say the story of earthbound was maybe not "risky", but pretty different.

People say that, but most of this board's favorite games do not have huge risks.

if you want games that "take risks" though, they are actually around more than ever, go on XBLA or Steam's indie section

maybe they dont seem like big risks now, but most of the "most popular" games of all time (not sure about this board's....im a new poster to this board) were a risk or a big change in some way, shape or form.

And the "you should play more indie games then" response is kind of saying "anything new in gaming should be relegated to an indie title or section like xbla or a section of steam". I think its dangerous to label things that way. Indie games tend to be pretty damn primitive too....

With that said, some PC titles are getting stronger again. Heroes 6 is the best installment since heroes 3/wog imo...of course thats only one example.

anyway, C, easily.. storytelling alone has come a long way in games, I think over time we have really learned what works and what doesn't also. And, the huge budgets for games these days means if you release a bad game, odds are, you are going to lose a lot more money than you ever would have before, which I think puts more pressure on these guys to deliver.

to be fair, the other side of the coin says that big budgets force developers to not take huge risks, and only release things that they are much more certain will sell to a more common denominator.

Its tough to say really about gaming. Large companies have been getting very stale the past few years. Almost the entire gen tbh. Smaller companies, while less common these days (fun but primitive indie games aside), still deliver in droves though.

i lean towards D.

I feel companies are taking advantage of things that dont benefit the consumer.

I am waiting for Battlefield 3 (mainly since it looks like a good FPS, something CoD has not had since CoD 4) but I am in no way anticipating the hell out of it. Till I got my work schedule today and saw I was still running the Midnight release of it, I had forgot it existed.

define gamer. Tbh, i feel a gamer is somebody who is a fan of multiple genres and keeps up with gaming news. While i agree that a game like modern warfare 3 has a higher number of people who just care about cod, its because the game sells so much more.

There are plenty of hardcore gamers who are excited for modern warfare 3. Gamester81 (a much more hardcore gamer than you will probably ever will be) is very excited for modern warfare 3 and has the first modern warfare in his top 100 games of all time. So ya. I agree with you that it attracts a large casual crowd, but to say no "gamers" look forward to it....ya just stop now before you sound even dumber.

whats funny is all i was trying to do with topic was express how gamers should be excited after a pretty meh past few years imo. It wasnt meant to be some "omg cod on the list and no sonic generations....fail list!!!". yep, its pretty fun too. Its not quite as good as heroes 3/WoG, but its a fresh new game thats worth playing just because heroes 3 has been beaten to death by its fans now...its over a decade old. Heroes 5 was solid too btw. But ya, check out heroes 6. So far for me id give it a solid 8.5/10. A little simplistic in some ways (fewer resources being the biggest thing), but they really expanded the hero customization!

saints row is gonna have massive amounts of DLC. Something like new stuff every week for the next year. Any DLC released within the first 2ish months is just a company trying to screw you over, unless its a patch to fix a technical issue or something (which is almost always free).....

Still, once you put MW3, it became a joke list. Best dictates good, and you have MW3, Halo 2, HL 2, GTA SA, MP 2, and worst of all WoW on that list. IE, there goes the good.

This month GOD STOMPS that month, which pretty much had Jak 3, Everquest 2, Ratchet and Clank, and MGS 3 (overrated as hell, but still great, unlike the other games, which are overrated and suck) and Prince of Persia.

protoss is the least developed race of the 3.....

its possible that its because toss metagame never changed due to 4-gate being absurdly overpowered for a while, but toss players have been getting owned the past few GSLs.

Carrier was useless, i still feel the corruptor will be useless (the corruptor is a reactionary unit by itself, its only built to counter colossi or capital ships. Just get rid of it and make brood lords require the new unit instead).

Thors being the "new mothership" is interesting, i feel its a good change as long as terran still have something to deal with mutas besides marine/medivac.

reapers are kinda worthless now, they were better used as a scout + worker harass than as a building destroyer.

Protoss will have the best air it seems now. Hell, the phoenix was already the best air unit in the game.....and these two units look great.

the problem with the nexus turret thing is that it can be placed on any toss building. It needs to be relegated to nexus only, or even anything but pylons. They just showed a cast of day 9 just cannoning some guy because he was able to get the pylon down and put a nexus turret on it. Seems a tad absurd to allow it be placed on pylons.

I disagree that it disproportionately favors VNs vs any other niche title, though. A niche shooter or a niche RPG is going to do just as well. And obscurity is by no means an auto-win-- sometimes you go out of your way to play a game and it's just not your game, or wasn't as good as it was hyped up to be!

for the most part, i disagree here. First off the people who go out of their way to play a niche game and it not be there thing are more likely to just not vote for the game, rather than anti-vote. And furthermore, the people who fall under that category is so much smaller than the ones who like or even force themselves to like a more niche game like phoenix wright, or umineko, or ever17.

id say most of the people "complaining" (like myself) are pretty steadfast with their beliefs. But the loudest ones might be the ones trying to find an excuse.

Many VNs are not though. But see tbh, i wouldnt call ever17 a VN. Id call it a text adventure game. Like tons of PC games in the 80s. Only better pictures. (again, im judging by the fact that a handful of posters here have said there is plenty of decision making and outcomes)

And yes, people look down on VNs in general as not being real games - this comes up a good bit in other topics. What I'm saying is that E17 winning is basically redirected anger. It's a lot easier to come out and say "VNs aren't real games and that's why this is stupid" than it is to say "I couldn't vote for my favorite games blindly and that's why this is stupid." And that's not necessarily me not giving people credit - that's how the brain works. We rationalize stuff like this, often without realizing it.

it is you not giving people the benefit of the doubt though. You are labeling them based on some "deeper" feeling you have. Maybe your right (judging by some of the posters id say you are), but its still not giving people the benefit of the doubt.

I think there are ~50 choices in each of the first four routes, and one of the good endings can actually be pretty difficult to get without a guide. Almost all of those choices matter for what ending you get too, though some matter a lot more than others.

I agree with KP that the problems all you loud complainers seem to have can be boiled down to "I couldn't vote the way I wanted to." Do you seriously think there would be nearly as much complaining if MGS3 had won? A Nintendo game? Hell, even something more "acceptably" cult like a Ratchet and Clank game? VNs are stigmatized as not being real games, but honestly they're just an acceptable target for complainers to redirect their rage at not being able to vote in the contest.

VNs arent really games though. Well let me clarify. A VN with next to no decision making by the reader is not a game. VNs with decisions to make are obviously just text based games, so yes they are video games.

The DS is a top 5 system of all time, and honestly if you played 5 hours a day, youd since like 2007....youd still have games worth trying. It had to die eventually.

i took a women's studies course as an undergrad. Aside from 2 to 3 "bad apples", every woman in the class was pretty open minded to improving men and women and seemed pretty rational with their beliefs. Plus the teacher really liked my term paper. Maybe i got an "exception to the rule" class, but it was not like the stereotype at all.
