I went to Hard to try it out but then I went into those Catacombs in the child story and the ghost bats's defense made the battle take like....two minutes to complete.

Abyss and Vesperia are waaay better than Symphonia. I can see preferring the plot/characters but the battle systems are much more improved.
It's still worth playing Abyss and Vesperia. It's not like one outclasses the other. At least, the changes in the battle system from TotA->ToV aren't as dramatic as the ones from ToS -> TotA. Speaking of titles and random missable crap, is there a spoiler-free guide for sidequests similar to Kouli's guide for Vesperia? That one was excellent.
Although apparently sidequest or cutscene trigger points are marked by a big shiny golden star marker and later show up in the Collector's Book. Or at least, I triggered something to that effect after Asbel's dad chews him out for the first time. This "Retake Mass Effect" movement is so weird. That's the name the fans are using to show that they want a new or updated ending.
I thought it was the fans being crazy again, but then I saw this charity drive. Well it's going to be hard to judge their quality if you've never played them but...
Tales games are similar to Final Fantasy in that none of them are directly related aside from obvious sequels (EDIT: actually I forgot; Symphonia was a stealth prequel to Phantasia. Only exception AFAIK). It's just cameos and recurring references and such. After Eternia (I think), they were developed by two major dev teams - Team Symphonia and Team Destiny. Symphonia, Abyss, and Vesperia were all done by Team Symphonia. Graces F is done by Team Destiny and is the first game from that team released outside of Japan (I think their others were Destiny R, Destiny 2, Rebirth, and Hearts). It's one of the "main" teams so it's supposed to be good.
