I don't know what all this "the characters don't use their powers to the extent that they could" nonsense is.
Dave and Rose just fully realized their powers and haven't gotten a chance to use them. Before that, Rose's power was just knowing things. Dave has his time travel but he couldn't use it to break the game because he'd be creating doomed timelines. Paradox space would have just broken him, and that kind of puts a damper on what is possible to do with time powers. John used his powers to drill a hole in a planet that symbolizes the infinite potential of creation, in order to rip out a bomb meant to destroy their sessions that contained two literal universes. Jade had her powers for all of five minutes and managed to shrink down five planets and rip a hole in spacetime in order to transport them, her, and John through the multiverse. If those examples aren't considered breaking the game then I don't know what is. Of the trolls, only Vriska, Terezi, and maybe Gamzee are in touch with their powers to any extent from what we've seen. Aradia's using hers for other purposes, and I guess you could also make a case for Sollux. Maybe it's just because it's been a while since I first played through DS1, but the only "tension" I remember before then was when you ran into the first boss, Wendigo...who was kind of a pushover. In fact, the whole game was pretty easy up until a certain point. Beldr was the real wake-up call for me both gameplay and storywise.

So I finally got around to reading the Grey/Palmiotti/Conner run of Power Girl...and it was great. Really fun stuff!
What's her deal in the New 52? I'm not saying it couldn't be anyone else, just that Gamzee has a shot at the title. Gazmee created both Cal and the jester doll that gave John nightmares, for example. Those caused a lot of events in the story to go down.
Of course, that happened because Dave was manipulated into driving Gamzee crazy by the Condesce. Then again, that only happened because Lord English trained her as his protege, which only happened because Scratch facilitated his summoning, which only happened because Lil Cal was there to spawn him. DC has an entire animation block incoming. I think it was brought up earlier in the topic. It starts Saturday at 10 AM (I think) on Cartoon Network and will show new episodes of Young Justice and a new GCI Green Lantern show with Red Lanterns as the (totally kid-friendly) villains. Also, shorts during commercial breaks like Super Best Friend Squad (or something, with Batgirl/Supergirl/Wonder Girl), Plastic Man, and Teen Titans.
I think the next DC Animated movie is The Dark Knight Returns. No idea what's up with Marvel. EDIT: Oh, and there's been a new Batman GCI series announced for a while but no actual trailers or anything yet. Uh....no. Scratch made it clear that when a session is scratched, the "ancestor" and "player" groups switch places.
I'm also pretty sure that it was explicitly mentioned that the pre-Scratch troll session wasn't where the trolls were spawned. The problem was that they weren't originally spawned in that session at all, and so had to create the alpha timeline where Karkat created them.
