Unpopular opinion? I think FF6 has the worst battle theme, but one of the best normal boss themes

Also Dancing Mad parts 1,2 and the last part are the only good parts of the song

It's not the worst but it's definitely not Uematsu's best. FF 9 has the best normal battle

IMO, using 1-10 and 13

Regular battle themes:

7 > 13 > 8 > 9 > 4 > 2 > 10 > 1 > 3 > 6 > 5

Boss themes (not final bosses - FF1 & 2 dont have one):

6 > 13 > 3 > 8 > 4 > 7 > 5 > 10 > 9

Great game. Its the best numbered Final Fantasy (Tactics beats it), and my favorite game from the SNES, narrowly beating out CT and Lttp.

Would it be a hot take to say that, in general, Final Fantasy regular battle themes aren't very good? They always seem to be near the bottom in every Final Fantasy game that I can think of.

Boss music, on the other hand, pretty much always ranges from great to awesome. Although... the final boss music usually isn't as good as mid game boss music.

My friend and I used to joke about how if you take any individual section out of the game everybody remembers that as an annoying section, but somehow stringing all of them together turns into a perfect experience.

it's a good game, but it has some issues. this is the company that thinks 'mug' is an upgrade to 'steal', after all.

Wait what? Mug is just steal+damage. That does seem analogous to the terminology. "Mugging" implies force whereas "steal" does not.

right, and this makes it harder to successfully steal.

without getting into the bugs, i think the question to ask is whether or not the experience through the game ever goes off of the balance rails, and i think ff6 kinda has no issue with it doing that. it wants you to beat it. it hands over ways to solve it. and that's not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but you get a real sense of what it means when you compare on-the-rails segments like most of the world of balance and the start of the world of ruin, where the difficulty curve is still sort-of a thing, to like, most of the world of ruin.

I personally disagree that the regular battle themes arent good. I like most of them - only 5 & 6 are weak entries, IMO.

The best boss themes are fantastic, though.

Here's the cliffs (IMO)
  • Large ensemble cast, all distinct from each other, and you get to actually use all of them. There are not really any bench warmers.
  • Full open world with tons of cool shit to find.
  • At the time it was made, had the most robust final boss encounter on the SNES. Chrono Trigger being 2nd.
  • Compelling story and all (except 4) the characters have robust backstory & personal drama.
  • Lots of really cool abilities and equipment options that were very new to final fantasy at the time such as Tools, Blitz, and Rage. Relics like Master's Scroll and Celestriad makes it fun to equip everyone.

A+ game
This signature is not political.
I consistently see many people regard it as the best in the series. I know in my own circle of friends it's the top of the series for them.

Eh, it's all right. It's the weakest of the SNES FF games, and a middling entry in the series overall. In short: not great, not terrible.

I will have to admit I do not disagree. But I think the problem is that most FF only has one generic battle theme so we get a bit tired of hearing it

Yeah that's definitely part of it.

Honestly I think JPRPGs would be better off without battle music for regular enemy encounters. Just let the music for the area play uninterrupted. Then use battle music for enemies that are mini boss level or above.

It also has one of the best ending sequences in gaming history, that IMO has yet to be topped. They didn't have to put in the extra effort of making it all one artful storybook-like conclusion with each character getting an equal spotlight backed by a beautiful, perfectly-timed* medley of all their individual theme songs, but they did, and I love them for it.

*at least on the original SNES release; god bless the Pixel Remaster for finally fixing the timing issue that plagued every other rerelease since.

It's the one hipsters who refuse to like 7 because it's too popular flock to, without yet realizing that 6 is now by far the most popular as a result.

I think they'll probably take up 9 next.

I think it's fine if they have multiple battle theme or a more agressive version of the overworld theme.

fucking fantastic game in so many ways, especially the characters and plot. i think in terms of experience, you go through so many more things during ff6 than you go through any other ff game, even ff7. also kefka is one of the most iconic villains that i know of, especially because of how much impact he has on the overall world without needing to be this constant "where's kefka?" character.

i would argue though that it has pacing issues about halfway and 3/4 of the way through. there are a few moments that aren't as great and can drop off players who aren't invested or who haven't fully ingrained themselves in the plot. that's like it's only fault, but it's pretty big because it can turn people off from ever finishing the game.

Disclaimer: There's a good chance the above post could be sarcasm.

Its good. Id say B tier for FF games. I understand why its so highly rated and loved, but too many things I didn't care that much for. Everyone that says its their favorite or the best FF game omly say it because they were super young playing it.

The thing I liked about 6 is how it got everything out of the SNES. I like the mid game wham moment, I mostly liked the magic system, I liked the Muppet Movie structure of the second half. Its my favorite along with 12, 1 and tactics. Ive been working my way through the series onthe switch and cant wait to play it again.
Why be stupid? Does it make you happy to be stupid?

This would be fine depending on the game and its soundtrack. I actually hated this shit in FFXII, but near the end of FFX it's great.
