In RPGs, do you usually prefer turn-based combat or real-time combat?

I know there are styles beyond strict "turn-based" and "real-time," but generally speaking, which type of combat do you prefer? I, personally, lean strongly toward turn-based. It tends to offer more strategy and depth. Too often, in games like Tales of Symphonia, I felt as if I just spammed the generic attack button like crazy while throwing in a special attack every so often, not really doing much thinking. Such combat lacks the intensity of action-based games as well as the strategy of turn-based RPGs. The fact that some of my favorite RPGs include the Pokemon series, Super Mario RPG, and Skies of Arcadia also makes me lean toward turn-based.

What do you think?

I prefer good combat, but turn-based is much easier to balance.

It's pretty hard to quantify since there are various sub-genres for each.

Turnbased.
Real-time almost always means everyone else is in the party is going to have really dumb AI.

...except in Xenoblade games, where the AI is vastly more competent than I am.
Tough call. Voted neutral because I love Tales / Xenoblade combat but I also love Lost Odyssey / FFVII combat

Whichever is done better. No real preference one way or the other. As long as it's good, I'm happy.

Some of my favorite rpgs are Dragon Warrior/Quests Monsters and Final Fantasy Tactics so turnbased it is!
This is my signature, there are many others like it, but this one is mine.
If you take 110% of what I say seriously then you're gonna have a bad time.
If we're talking a party system, turn-based. Solo, I like WRPG-styled combat like in Bethesda games.

I agree with this. Parties need either excellent AI with lots of player control (Dragon Age: Origins had this) or they need to be turn-based with full player control (which actually DA:O also had as an option). For solo games, turn-based slows things down and doesn't really add anything.
what's really the important factor is how tactical the combat is and how good it is, turn based or not. it can be good or bad either way.

I'll lean towards real-time though, I think, mainly because turn-based combat tends to create a disconnect between exploration and combat. in a real-time game, you can loot a chest while being waled on by a zombie, for example. in a turn-based game, this is only possible if the combat occurs in the same space as the exploration, consuming AP or something for looting a chest.

note that I'm thinking of "pausable real-time", too. to put it simply: pausable-real-time > turn-based > unpausable real-time
Real-Time, though with decent teammate AI, proper hitboxes, and movement that isn't slow & clunky... or "realistic" as some people like to call it.

turn, no contest
Action-based because usually it feels like I'm more in control of my actions and that combat usually feels more rewarding. Being able to actually dodge or block an attack feels far more rewarding to me than having a chance to dodge/block it.

I feel like this can also apply to turn-based combat as well. Spam attack and strongest spells. Maybe I've just been playing too many bad turn-based RPGs recently.

Real time has worse AI. I prefer the strategy of turn based

Turn base, easily. Whether it's menu based by jrpg, strategy like old fallout, or pause issue command like baldur's gate, they are all better than real time action rpg. I don't think there's a rpg I like that wouldn't benefit from switching to one of those combat systems.

I dunno. Seems like it would be awkward in Symphony of the Night.
I don't consider action games with rpg elements as rpg.

I'm okay with either one.

I prefer turn-based usually. I'm more of a thinker than a twitch gamer.
Personally, I find turn based combat to be boring as fuck. If a game has turn based combat I won't buy it.

Same. I prefer thinking over what to do and planning, plus RPG and Turn-Based Strategy (which is much less common than RTS) are basically the only genres you get to do that. If I want real time combat, I have plenty of other games to choose from.
Not strongly in favor though, because a rare few games like Xenoblade have done real time combat so well, and that was fun, too.
But I prefer turn-based.
Pokmon is the only turn-based RPG I've ever enjoyed. It's not realistic if it isn't realtime.
It really depends, I love turn-based gameplay in series like SMT, but I hate the Active battle system some FFs use and I abhor Pokemon's tediously slow gameplay.

I sort of flip flop between liking Turn-based and real time more too, both have their merits and can be either really great or terribly obnoxious depending on different things.
equo ne credite!
Real-time. Turn-based usually requires too much thinking. I got this game called Will-Nilly Knight that looks great and sounds pretty good from some of the reviews but I haven't got more than 10 minutes into it simply because the combat is pause-n-play.
Turn-based

Honestly it is kind of hard to screw up turn-based combat (unless you make it Active Time Battle like Final Fantasy IV - IX). Then again, when real-time combat is done right it can be very satisfying.

Guess it depends on the mood I am in.

Turn-based. I prefer action-adventure games for real-time combat. Real-time RPGs usually have terrible combat and the games are saved only by the story or by good exploration elements.

Disagree, I find it's the worst of both worlds.

Can't take the time to think tactically like in true turn-based combat, but still follows its conventions and denies you the freedom of real time combat.

Of course there's examples of good games that had enjoyable combat despite being ATB-like (Baten Kaitos Origins and Chrono Trigger would be my top picks there), but I usually play an ATB game and wish it wasn't that way.
Prefer real time, but I wouldn't want them to only be real time. I enjoy a good turn based rpg as well.
Assassins do it from behind.
I prefer turn based but I love the Tales battle system.

Most iterations of ATB can go die in a fire though.
