Because its like the real life situation millennials face. Growing up in the 90's we were told we could be anything. We had heroes like the ninja turtles and power rangers that seemed invincible.

Star wars was like that too. The end of ROTJ ended with Han Solo getting the girl, the empire being defeated and Luke Skywalker learning to be a Jedi giving hope that a new generation would be trained.

The new trilogy reveals that this the future wasn't that bright. The empire is back, Han Solo's relationship didn't work out and luke skywalker is now a broken old man. I find this like my life situation with a near minimum wage job, global warming and the disaster of a president we have.

Instead of some happy future, the new Star Wars shows the character's ideals being crushed beneath the weight of their reality. The promise we were given to us as children was a lie.

This doesn't mean there isn't hope it means that we need to pull together to defeat the evil in front of us. Now that we know the truth we can fight it and have a happy ending.

This isn't the star wars your parents had. It might hit on nostalgia a little bit, but in the end it's moving into the future with bold new ideas, heroic new characters and a satisfying end for old ones.

This is the star wars I like, and it's much better than the Jedi superman bullcrap they did in the EU.
