This game is hard. Any easy way to beat it without going on easy mode?

Explore everywhere and talk to every NPC, the game gets easier when you have the proper materia and skills.

You will have to get used to switching materia around depending on what you're fighting. Use scan on every enemy you encounter.

I'm playing right now. Just finished Corel Desert. I do main missions on normal, and if the bosses are too tough I play until I get good. Seems simple but I've found that beginning every battle with assess is a must and then the game tells you how to approach them as far as elements. Hit them with those elements or do what you need to do to pressure them. In fact, if they have any elemental weaknesses at all it should always be an easy battle. Once pressured use moves like "focused shot" (Barrett) that specifically say they build the stagger meter. Cloud and Tifa have one too, and some others. After they are staggered throw all your triangle special moves at them. Rinse and repeat. It's all about cycling pressuring and staggering then hitting massive moves.

Red XII sucks if you suck at blocking. Which I do. Still getting used to some others, though I won't spoil them yet just in case. Blocking is a good way to build your ATB though. And if you're hurting it might be your only choice.

I've had good luck with the core four though. Cloud/Tifa/Barret or Cloud/Tifa/Aerith. I like equipment and materia that increase ATB quicker on those 4 particularly.

But honestly? All side content big fights, I've just switched to easy. Screw spending time trying to strategize against side content and gimmick like battles Game has enough time suck distractions anyways. Like way too much side stuff.

Love it though. Having fun.

I didn't find any of the side bosses much harder than the regular campaign guys until near the end (and also one notable exception in the simulator)

basically what ^ said. assess to see what pressures them, pressure them until stagger, unload the ATB attacks/combo attacks. Aerith does big damage if you can set up radiant ward (which you may or may not have yet)

I'm in the first area right now. Like 8 hours in. I need to reread all the mechanics since I don't remember how to stagger or pressure or whatnot.

Trying to figure out how to make the computer handle the party members combat better. There's a way to make your party actually use magic right?

Mechanically I think you're supposed to switch characters semi-often. The enemy typically targets you so use that to your advantage to draw them away if needed. Computer does a decent job parrying but no they don't fight back much.

There's materia that'll make them use moves automatically like magic and triangle moves. But still, if you like to control everything and not have the computer "waste" ATB, it's sometimes better just to switch and do it yourself.

All right I'm off. Looking forward to seeing your thoughts in later topics.

You can normally pressure enemies by hitting them with an elemental weakness. Some enemies have a specific way to get pressured and that's why you gotta Assess. When an enemy is pressured, you can more quickly build the stagger gauge.

Rebirth introduces Synergy Skills, which can be great for buildng ATB for multiple characters at the same time and can be used for free.

Synergy Abilities can interrupt enemies that cast big nukes.

Enemies aggro more on the character you are controlling. Use that to your advantage so characters don't get interrupted when casting heals or spells. I think it was R2 or L2 to command characters you are not controlling.

Blocking and Perfect Blocking can also help generate ATB. Perfect Blocking can also create openings for certain enemies.

I'm not that great with action games myself. Mainly with this game I focused on building up one character's ATB bar and using it when appropriate, and also monitoring other characters' ATB bars and switching to those characters and using those when appropriate. I didn't really parry much and would sometimes just use the dodge button between attacks if I wasn't sure what else to do. Then over time you'll learn to work in more things like synergy skills.

There are a few hard fights, but mostly you should be fine with the basics. A thing I like about FF7R is it really feels like you're supposed to be controlling all the characters and not just one, so it feels more like there's a real party to manage.

Most of the game's open world sections are that big yea. It's a surprisingly long/big game if you're doing all the open world stuff.

It's hard to give specific combat tips, because the game is pretty complicated, there are just so many things to say!

I would suggest, every 5 hours of gameplay or so, go into the menus to re-read all the combat guides again, especially the character-specific ones. It's VERY common to miss, or misunderstand, or forget, a fundamental aspect of the combat. It's impossible to retain it all, if you only read every guide screen once (e.g. the first time it appeared on screen).

Especially character-specific quirks! For example, there's an easy button combination to get in the air and start an air combo with Cloud, easily missed or forgotten.

---

For overall strategy, I recommend giving EVERY character in your roster, ways to heal each other. For 99% of fights, the only way to fail, is to fail to heal your party, and they all die. So give everyone Healing materia, or Prayer materia, or both. (Or just use items I guess.) Dealing damage is good, but not dying is more important--and you WILL take lots of damage, that's the way the game is designed, so you'll have to heal.

During a fight, keep swapping characters and attacking, to build up their ATB meters. Computer-controlled party members are basically useless, do little damage, and basically don't build ATB--you have to do it. (On the plus side, they don't take much damage either!)

You never wanna be caught with 0 party members with ATB: you would have no way to use an urgent heal spell, if someone suddenly needs it!! So build up everyone's ATB.

You also don't want a party member to be at max ATB for very long: because that means they're wasting any ATB they would be building right now! Go use their ATB.

If the character you're controlling is being targetted by enemies, just swap. Most enemies will just keep hitting the previous character, so now you're free to get some hits in. This is less true of boss enemies.

ATB Boost is helpful to make sure you start out with ATB at least

Also, something that isn't explained super well is that synergy attacks (not the flashy double-techs but the smaller ones) often build ATB very quickly
