There's a lot of reasons, I typically think most of it boils down to apathy though and it's hard to not blame them for that apathy when it often feels like the government is actively working against your interests constantly regardless of who is in power.

Yeah to people like us who are more plugged in there's far more nuance to it than that but these are not people who are actually paying attention.

Variations on 'None of the parties gives a shit about me', 'they're all the same', 'I'm not political', etc.

The feeling that their vote doesn't matter, either in the grand scheme of things, or because they live in a constituency where the result is a foregone conclusion.

Can't be bothered.

Sufficient barriers have been put up between them and the act of voting.

  1. Disillusionment with voting entirely
  2. Deliberate orchestration of suppressing the vote (clearing the voter roles, removing the ability to hand out water in lines, shortening early voting, voter IDs and etc.)
  3. Outright lies about candidates running
  4. Not wanting to take time off from work.

Ignorance and apathy. Also a lot of people think that things will never get better, but that's mostly because people aren't putting in the effort to make things better. The GOP has been doing their thing for at least 50 years now, but people get upset that the Dems can't unfuck things in a term. While I think there's more they could be doing, there's a lot to unfuck.

A lot of people simply go "I'm not into politics" which is fucking batshit crazy to me. That's literally saying you aren't into how the education system, insurance, economy, rights etc. work.

And it's otherwise smart people that I've heard say it. People just aren't properly informed what "politics" actually affect.

I say this around a lot of elections, people do NOT pay attention and you see it all the time and doubly so when elections are near.

Look at British Columbia, the NDP won the last Provincial election there but it was a bit of a nail biter. Now, BC is the most left province but people know jack shit about the BC Conservatives and just how extreme and awful they are so a ton of people voted for them out of ignorance. This shit happens ALL THE TIME and EVERYWHERE.

Everywhere I've ever lived its been like this.

Lack of caring. It's very easy to justify not caring if you only look at how it affects you, as for a lot of people, regardless of who wins, their own life will not dramatically change.

Add things to the mix like a left learning person seeing Democrats constantly fumbling and the passion can just evaporate. Then there's also spiteful things like "If most of the country wants to vote against their own interests, fuck them. I'm going to let them.".

The American system for elections is, by design, extremely hostile to most people to actually participate in.

Being able to step out for 20 minutes during a workday is a luxury for most and that's assuming the best case of a local poll location with adequate throughput

It is genuinely strange that it's not a holiday

I think part of what fuels people's feelings that their vote doesn't matter and it doesn't affect them anyway is that there's so much focus on national news and it seems people don't follow local news as much as they used to. Depending on where you live, it can be hard to follow local news even if you want to since so many small town newspapers no longer exist.

What's happening nationally is important, but on a state and especially local level your vote counts for a lot more and what happens there is more likely to have a direct impact on your daily life.

Even if the vote is worth more on a local level, that doesnt necessarily mean it will matter more. Last time my city had a local election there were three mayoral candidates and all were older conservative men with essentially the same platform. And for city council there was only one more person running than there were seats.

I mean that's the problem. Localized politics is vastly underrated and because of that, people just don't run for those offices. If people knew how important local politicians are to keeping housing prices low/high, we'd have a lot more people running for those positions

1.I think GOP propaganda has been very successful convincing people that all political parties are the same and awful, and so a lot of people dont bother.

2.I think a lot of Americans take democracy for granted as something that will always be here, no matter how lazy and unengaged they are. As was always obvious, and as we have seen, Democracy is actually fragile as hell. An attentive voting base has to check corruption, or it will not work.

3.GOP has engaged in decades of voter suppression and rolling back initiatives to make voting easier for people. They know if everyone votes, they lose. Harder to vote equals less votes.

In the past, it was because I didn't pay attention to politics much and didn't think it really mattered since I live in a deeply red state. So I didn't really think it was worth it since I didn't know about early voting and it was very hard to get time from my job. Nor did I want to stand in line for a very long time. Trump has made me much more political though, and now I vote against republicans every chance I get. Especially with early voting. My two or three early voting experiences were amazing. I literally walked into the building and immediate was able to go through processing and hit a kiosk within 30 secs and walked out.

Oh I'm happy to criticise them for the rest of their existence, but it doesn't change the fact that the reason they aren't in a position to fix things is because people don't vote for them. On top of that, primary turnout is so poor that it's difficult to get rid of some of these shitty Dems. Until America unfucks its voting system (like that could happen without revolution) the people need to start ensuring the right candidates get through to the elections in the first place.

The problem as I see it is they can never just be upfront about it.

Like ok, the state income tax now funds this thing instead of the state property tax. Sure, some politics chess grand master sees that and immediately goes OH NO but someone would have to sit me down and explain why that's bad, why that ultimately means something that actually does matter, that they couldn't just come out and say.

In the US, Election Day not being a national holiday is a deliberate choice to make it harder for working people to vote

In lucky in that I live in MA, a state that makes it very easy to vote with lots of polling locations at least.

for the 2024 election I went at about 5pm and I was in and out within 5 minutes. But my city had like 10 different polling stations
