Rank your top five choices among the below:
American Football - American Football
Boston - Boston
D'Angelo - Voodoo
Maria Daniela y su Sonido Lasser - Juventud en xtasis
Kings of Leon - Because of the Times
Kiss - Destroyer
Metric - Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?
Mobb Deep - The Infamous
Poppy - Negative Spaces
Queensrche - Operation: Mindcrime
Sly and the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On

spreadsheets with previous results can be found here:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/12PpZ3uQ093tRPVu-KLewIxmrzfLJf1oo?usp=drive_link

The rules:
1. Listen to the album in full
2. Rank every track on the album
3. For the results, there will be a curve at the top of each list; two additional points between #1 and #2, and one additional point for the next two ranks. This way, the songs that really stick out to someone get an edge that is not immediately negated by someone else putting it lower. In the case of Demon Days, someone's 15th track will get 1 point, 14th 2 points, 4th 12 points, 3rd 14 points, 2nd 16 points, and 1st 19 points. For albums with greater than 15 tracks, everything ranked below #15 will be given 0 points and the scale for the top 15 will be the same as a 15-track album. For albums with more than 20 tracks, you only have to list your top 15 (with 16-20, I still like having the average rank listed)
4. If you want to include comments for individual songs, I will compile them in the results
5. The results will be posted at the beginning of the next topic
6. The deadline to vote is Thursday, November 13th at 8:00 AM Central Time; If you do get in a vote after the deadline but before I post the results, I will probably include it.
7. Every few weeks, a nomination period will open; there may or may not be a theme. Each user can nominate one album. The following week, everyone will be able to rank their top ~5 among the choices - this will use a bottom-up scoring approach, i.e. voting for one album will give your #1 a single point, voting for five will give your #1 five points, so it is always better to vote for the maximum number of albums. The top ~5 will then be covered (if there is a tie leading to six entries, both get in - if more than that, I will do a tiebreaker)
8. Skits and tracks under 40 seconds will be excluded from the rankings unless argued otherwise

100 gecs - 10,000 gecs track list:

American Football - American Football:
Representing my city with the best local band. American Football is one of those legendary cult classics where the band broke up before the album could take off, only to grow in stature over the years. These days, it's pretty much THE Midwest emo album.

Sample track:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-SWkpGKdP8&list=RDp-SWkpGKdP8&start_radio=1

Boston - Boston:
This is an awesome classic rock album and I'm certain everyone has heard multiple songs from it, including the Guitar Hero staple, More Than a Feeling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4QK8RxCAwo

D'Angelo - Voodoo:
a neo-soul masterpiece, influenced in part by Sly's There's a Riot Goin' On

and for the sample track, the big obvious pick:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxVNOnPyvIU

Maria Daniela y su Sonido Lasser - Juventud en xtasis:
This is the album that I've been obsessed with for the past month and a half since I first discovered it, so I'm trying to spread it as much as possible. Some fairly high energy electropop with some seriously addictive hooks, fronted with lighthearted and sometimes humorous lyrics if you're able to translate them. This also gives some more language variety to our rankings besides the usual English and Japanese, but I can assure you that you don't need to know Spanish in order to enjoy this.

Sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMsuxTST9gA

Kings of Leon - Because of the Times:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYOW5uoyKl0

Overrated at their peak? Probably, but Kings of Leon are still a cool rocking band, especially in this album, which has a nice mix of alt rock and their more earlier Americana sound. Also just one of those bands that was iconic for a while that we haven't done!

Kiss - Destroyer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4okh7Y25dmQ

I'm not exactly a fan of 80s hair metal, but I mentioned wanting to do a Kiss album in honor of Ace Frehley passing. They were my dad's favorite band, and Destroyed is iconic enough of an album that its cover art basically defined an entire genre.

Metric - Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?:
https://youtu.be/ec74Q0DbE2w?si=GrGpQVZ8YddBErn0

Mobb Deep - The Infamous:
My favorite 90's hip hop album. The dark production and the impressive beats really make this album. Great storytelling and rap delivery/flow as well. It's just so, so impressive all the way through.

Sample track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLjXz9ghUtk

Poppy - Negative Spaces:
I know one of the times this failed to get through was because I missed voting, gonna try to avoid that this time! Just a really fun album that came out last year, and my favorite thing she's done. I think she nails the sounds she's going for on it, catchy and heavy in great measures. It also helps that Jordan Fish is producing on it. He's really started to shine on his own post leaving Bring Me the Horizon

https://youtu.be/OqVNYcaS-3E?si=DefNUJIdHKCMVXGX

Queensrche - Operation: Mindcrime:
Going back to my very first nom, my favorite album. Incredible concept album with lyrical content that is still relevant today (maybe more than ever). Sample (two tracks in one here): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O8LhD6fZWg

Sly and the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On:
Rather less accessible than Sly and the Family Stone's previous acclaimed smash, its dense, almost deliberately muddy funk and soul stemmed mainly from Sly Stone himself, contrasting its studio predecessor's multifaceted recording process. Still, this lateral turn inward produced an album widely hailed as Sly and the Family Stone's moment-meeting magnum opus, and one that's manifested sweeping influence on subsequent music.

Sample track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xag5RKD0VHk&pp=0gcJCQMKAYcqIYzv

So....I need some context for this album, because I am somewhat shocked it survived the nomination process.

It is an exceedingly stupid album. It reminds me of blink 182, Sum 41, and other pop-punk bands of the late 90s/early 00s but just 20+ years later. Obviously not the same sound, but the same dumb, sophomoric tone and lyrical content. Now, I personally enjoy that stuff, but Enema of the State did not get much love during the track rankings or during that Rank the Albums.

Why did people that aren't me suddenly decide this one passed muster?

Unsure, would love to go back and see what single songs were nominated. I can definitely see some hyper electropop breaking through if all the other noms SFF'd each other considering the relative somber drama of Flow State, HOPELESSNESS, and Willoughby Tucker

Edit: Okay, HOPELESSNESS is less 'somber' drama and more 'your audacity to ignore the sheer hollow void that will consume us all and I will shine a 1000-watt spotlight on rvery shadow you t4y and turn your gaze from' drama

To be fair, I had these thoughts all in my head a week or two ago when I did an initial listen and then that was reinforced when I did another listen earlier this week. They do look a little silly after Jonbobb's post but I figured I'd share anyway.

I don't remember who nominated this album or who voted for it. (Pretty sure I gave it a 4th or 5th place vote.) I just didn't think there was a lot of love from the overall ranking group for "silly" albums like this. Like, why did this get through and not Frost Children? My implication being that, having listened to both for the first time recently, I would think Frost Children would do better in the overall group context. Outside of this topic series, I'm disconnected from the music scene, so I don't know if there's something about 100 gecs popularity that I'm missing.

I would personally prefer Frost Children of the two but I'm of the impression that Gecs have a bit of a meme status because the music is dumb as fuck (and I say that with affection).

I also just think that for nominations in this cycle we had fairly spread votes, so a couple of high Gecs rankings probably swayed it?

Some of these songs hit the perfect balance of annoying/fun. Doritos & Fritos in particular is too much on the annoying scale. Offhand, No Control is slightly shorter. There may be others too, but I'm sure it's at least in the top five.

On that note, for those who are on the fence about giving 10,000 gecs a spin regardless of its length, would it help to try out a single song first? Am unsure which track I'd say is most accessible, but Dumbest Girl Alive comes first, is nearly shortest, and (yes, ranking spoilers) is my favorite song and possibly also Bane's, as this album's two key supporters. And if you wind up not getting a negative impression from it at that point, letting the rest of the album play out would only take another 25 minutes.

Gonna knock this one out now, I'll go back and do Ethel in the next couple of days

Still incredibly impressed with this album even after 2 years of listening to it on and off. It's just so fun, it doesn't take itself too seriously and it goes through a bunch of genres of music in a cool way. I think as I've gotten older and listened to more music, and also increased the scope of who I listen to/give chances/be open to trying, I've just been more happy to hear fresh stuff and I'm much less uptight about what something "should" sound like. I think being much more outwardly queer thanks to my friend community and general understanding of myself also helps a lot, there's so much music that's being spearheaded by the queer community. And the music industry at large has started to realize that in recent years, and even when they don't, having supportive online communities has helped queer art as well, and 100 gecs definitely developed a massive online fanbase with their debut and subsequent material/live shows. So all in all, hell yea this album rocks.

  1. Dumbest Girl Alive - Like I spoiled earlier, how can you listen to the riff in this song and NOT start wanting to rock out? Numerous major artists and bands have used at their live shows as background music to hype up before opening or keep the hype up after the encore, and it's a great move. Also the lyrics are sort of perfect for the type of critic who generally criticizes the duo, thinking they're too dumb to be worth listening to. So yea, Laura's the dumbest girl alive and she'll put emojis on her grave and take bait from someone texting for a fight. Also talking about her feelings going through HRT treatment.
  2. Hollywood Baby - Clear reason why I made this one the sample song, it has a pop punk energy that I thought would resonate. But also put through the filter of 100 gecs, which what makes it pop out. I sort of take it as a reaction to their newfound fame following their debut album, what "making it in Hollywood" means and what if they fail.
  3. Frog on the Floor - https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/5/5a80cbf3.jpg
  4. mememe - I really like the progression of this one, especially in the final chorus. I like the theme of not knowing someone, or feeling like someone will never really know you for one reason or another
  5. I Got My Tooth Removed - Ska? In my 100 gecs? Such a funny song, and some really fun ska. I wouldn't even say I particularly love ska most of the time, but a small dose like this works great.
  6. Billy Knows Jamie - Fuck yea nu metal. There's that sort of Limp Bizkit swagger to this one that goes hard.
  7. Doritos & Fritos - The lyrics are goofy but fun, love the way Laura goes "Then give me all of those fucking Doritos and Fritos!"
  8. The Most Wanted Person In The United States - "Got Anthony Kiedis sucking on my penis" makes this a 10/10 song
  9. One Million Dollars - Just an electronic rager, some super fun switchups in it
  10. 757 - Even as my lowest ranked on the album, I still really like it. The outro switch is really cool.

Massive differences between initial listen, weekend listen, Monday listen, and today's finalizing. I'd say the only gap of quality is between the top eight which are fairly fluid depending on the day and mood and the bottom two which have been and remain my least favorite of the tracks.

757 - uhhnnhhehha

Doritos & Fritos - "Cheetos, Doritos and Fritos, mosquitos" could've easily been Tostitos. C'mon. How it's done, because of 'mosquitos,' my brain goes 'hair nails blade mascara' in the same cadence and briefly slip away from the song for like five seconds 50% of the time.

Dumbest Girl Alive - I see Bane's comment on rocking out, but that's '757' for me.

Dumbest Girl Alive
Hollywood Baby
757
Doritos & Fritos
Mememe
Frog on the Floor
I Got My Tooth Removed
The Most Wanted Person in the United States
Billy Knows Jamie
One Million Dollars

I had a much stronger reaction to 1000 gecs than 10,000 gecs, think it had both higher highs and lower lows. I found this to be mostly fine and kind of funny, with a couple of tracks I could do without (Billy Knows Jamie and One Million Dollars)

As I said previously, a very stupid album but overall pretty enjoyable other than Billy Knows Jamie.

Funny thing, I was playing Tony Hawk 3+4 recently and Hollywood Baby came up. Serendipity!

Sly and the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On: 18
oh...

~

There's something about the way this album manifests such overarching exuberance through its sheer energy plus Laura and Dylan's evident enthusiasm that's just sort of swept me up ever since my first spin. Like for you, Bane, I think my openness to music like this also has had much to do with my increasing embrace of my own queerness, with reaching a (non-final) relative understanding of and comfort with being queer and with how I present and otherwise manifest that. 10,000 gecs released soon after, and it was overwhelmingly queer friend-circle communities (and particularly one sometime music-making friend within them) that put the album on my radar and got me to give it a listen. And, I think, those firmly queer-coded senses of community and self-acceptance are what it's emotionally associated with in my mind. So yeah, it does typically take me being in a more upbeat mood to actually want to listen to this and then to get into it, but also that's basically just the difference between passively enjoying it and, say, bopping along from side to side almost the entire time.

It also feels fitting to share my favorite lines (or sets of lines) - whether due to the words themselves, their delivery, their context, or any other combination of factors - from each song here. To be clear, I've long loved every single one of these songs for reasons that overlap in some ways and don't in others, and lyrics are only one factor that plays into my opinions among them. Leaving these here sans explanation (besides agreeing that "Got Anthony Kiedis sucking on my penis" is an amazing line) feels right somehow:

  1. Dumbest Girl Alive - "I've got lightning in my veins, walk around like Frankenstein/I did science on my face, I'm the dumbest girl alive"
  2. mememe - "I put my paws on my face and pretend to cry"
  3. Frog on the Floor - "Hey, yeah, I heard you met my friend the other weekend/I heard that he was telling croaks at the party/And then he got on his front legs and did a keg stand/Wow, that's so cool, I wish I was there so I could see it"
  4. I Got My Tooth Removed - "It doesn't hurt me every day, so I just let it get away/I'll deal with it another day, I guess that day just never came"
  5. 757 - "Live in dog years and I feel 26/Yeah, I'm old bitch but I learn new tricks"
  6. The Most Wanted Person in the United States - "Everybody shuts the fuck up when I'm passing"
  7. Hollywood Baby - "Little tiny Hollywood baby"
  8. Doritos & Fritos - "Okay, I saw a bee, it flew into a screen"
  9. Billy Knows Jamie - "Oh, oh, hey, oh, yeahno, oh my God, no, Jamie, no, he's a totally chill guy, like,"
  10. One Million Dollars - [1:01] "One million dollars"
Oh, should say that the above is indeed my ranking of the tracks as a whole, not my ranking of the lines I quoted.
