As this was all going on I couldn't help clicking on news videos popping up on youtube, and oh my fucking GOSH the racism and xenophobia was out of control. Before the identity of the suspect was released everyone was sure it was a muslim honour killing and then after his identity was released they were all like "usual suspects".

The key difference is that the Tories have effectively imploded, leaving room for another right wing party to take their place. People are very dissatisfied with Labour right now too and will not vote them back in on their current course. With both major parties in bad shape, this is probably the best opportunity that other parties will get for at least a generation. With there being no other right wing party, Reform has the perfect storm to get them into power. Even in the last election, they did better than UKIP ever did. The left will effectively be split between Labour, the Lib Dems and the Greens.

In contrast, in 2015 (when UKIP did their best) the Tories gained a proper majority and the third parties basically dried up. Cameron promising a Brexit vote removed most of the reason to support UKIP unless you were racist.

The one hope weirdly is that they win more councils that end up being the utter shitshow we're seeing in Kent, which is likely an accurate representation of what we can expect from a Reform government. It needs to actually hit the people there such as with increased council tax or the destruction of government services. The people need what they think they want so they realise how awful it actually is. Sadly, British conservatives very much follow in the footsteps of the American ones so I'm not confident that's enough.

Starmer needs to be replaced ASAP if they have any hope. He clearly has no idea what he's doing and no bold plans to sell to people. He's so unpopular that he's poison to anything he does do.
