Those of us who have been anime dweebs for a long time are well versed in the experience of an amazing anime being completely unrecognisable in quality in subsequent seasons but it feels like a lot of people are watching anime for the first time with One Punch Man.

Still disappointing though

i only saw the first season of One Puch Man and it was like 10 years ago.

heard season 2 was bad in terms of animation. somehow, season 3 manages to be worse from what i also heard... quite astonishing really!

Did these people miss season 2? It wasn't terrible, but it was definitely a let down. Apparently there was a lot behind the scenes that made season 1 as great as it was.

This is actually the norm for most anime, sadly.

They get some hotshot studio to do the first season while the hype is fresh, like Mappa, and then for season 2 they palm it off to a more budget operation.

Unlike OPM the manga is still good, so no reason for it to fall off that hard.

That was a manga that slowly dropped off from amazing to mid to not good adapted into something that want straight from amazing to awful. There wasn't really a way to not disappoint people though. The manga drops off pretty damn hard by the end.

No, S3 is just that bad. Think of all the issues S2 had but cranked up to 11. Its generally some of the worst animation I and many others have seen in a good while.

the manga does drop off but it's still a fun read for me while the anime adation for the second season was shit cuz the production community wanted to be over with it and made the studio screw it up with shitty budget and skipping the best arc
the problem currently in the industry is the suits who control the budgets that is why most adaption are shit cuz most studio's are mostly in the red half the time cuz they are given horrible deadline and shoe strings budget and most don't get to receive the profits the shows they do unless they are a big studio who owns the IP instead of the suits who do

yeah compared to S2 this season shows the studio had to rush the production and with shoestrings budget so i don't doubt the suits want this to tanks so they don't have to hear fans wanting more

this is depressing cuz if they are real fans they should know it's not the studio's but the suits in the production community who are the culprits for these mess

OPM went to shit because they swapped to a different animation company. madhouse, the company that animated trigon/black lagoon/death note/and frieren, produced the first season. they're widely known to make quality anime. then they swapped to JC staff, which is apparently well known for taking low budget projects and producing slow with that low budget.

I don't know if anyone saw the NieR Automata anime adaptation, but they actually went back and fixed a ton of shitty shots for the Blu-ray and even changed the version on streaming (in Japan anyway). They didn't fix every single bad shot, but they fixed most of them and the worst ones.

Edit: Here's an example (improved version on left):

OPM S1 was a lighting bolt in a bottle cuz the guy in charge had connections and was able to get higher budget and teams for it but after he retired this was bound to happen cuz you need a big shot with pulls for OPM later seasons to be as good as the 1st
and yes JC staff is known for low budget adaption but it's not like the staff wants to screw over the works i remember reading about how the director once begged the suits to give him more time and episode cuz he didn't want to butcher the work but was told no
when they do have the budget some of their adapted shows are decent

Well that's super disappointing to hear. I watched both seasons of One Punch Man a few years ago, and while season 2 definitely dropped off from the first in terms of animation quality. I still thought it was decent enough, and the season overall was kinda good.

I had hoped with the amount of time between season 2 and 3, and season 3's teaser trailer debut in April of last year. That JC Studio had a lot of time to work on the animation, and make it better than season 2. It doesn't have to reach Season 1's quality, as that's a pretty high bar to reach and was set by a better animation studio. I'd take animation that's half as good as season 1 of One Punch Man, but man from what little I've read and heard about season 3. What a let down so far.

I'll still watch the season eventually.

Meanwhile MHA just had one of its best episodes ever. Animation was fucking insane, music was insane. Everything just came together so well for one amazing episode. The animators they got on board for the episode who already were known for their amazing work all came together to help deliver this masterpiece of an episode and Yuki Hayashi killed it with the music. It's probably the only time I watched an anime episode more than once in a day with only a few hours between the first and second watch.

oh i'm not saying the artists are to blame. anime industry is criminal in how they pay artists and overwork the hell out of them and have been since it all started. but JC staff is known for taking pretty much anything offered, so you'll see them pump out a ton of different anime each year with fairly poor quality.

i know they are like DEEN that low budget studio that once you hear they are in charge you pretty much know for a fact the adaption will be barebone

Yeah, my interest petered out around ep6 or so of s2 and it never came back. The animation never bothered me, but like so many people have said it felt like the show was rapidly becoming the very thing it was parodying.

Which is honestly fine with me, because in terms of personal headcanon s1 works well enough as a one-off.
