I used to watch that show all the time and never questioned any of it, LOL. They would take people's beat up cars and just do anything. They'd be putting in fish tanks, automatic dinner bell ringers, exhaust that spits out playing cards, a slot machine in a van door, etc. And as a kid, I was like "OH MAN, THAT'S SO COOL!"

"We know you work at the airport. So we hooked you up with a baggage claim in the trunk! Complete with 3 PSPs that slide back and forth on the belts!"

It was all so stupid and insane, LOL.

i'd imagine a lot of them were impossible to sell because of the dumb shit and bad wiring in them.

only reason that show did so well is because of Xzibit, which is sad because he apparently got fucked over in pay.

iirc, a large portion of the modifications were literally just for the show and were stripped out after filming or the cars were straight up faked instead of actually being customised.

Yeah. They added a bunch of shiny stuff to the outside but they were all clunkers that probably got scrapped within the year.

I'd say it was probably more due to them being gigantic pieces of shit, since they never FIXED the cars, they just put a cement mixer in the trunk and had a mobile traffic cone dispenser because the guy worked in construction one summer. lol

Wow, this sounds so shit

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pimp_My_Ride#Claims_of_deception_by_participants

Several participants who appeared on seasons 4 and 6 of Pimp My Ride later stated that elements of the show were either exaggerated or faked.[2] The houses where Xzibit would surprise contestants with the news they were selected were often rented by MTV. The initial poor condition of some of the vehicles was staged to look worse, including the removal of paint, trash in the interior, and bumpers loosened to the point of falling off. Some features added during filming were removed immediately afterwards due to potential issues with local and state traffic laws, and the participants noted that multiple takes were needed to film their reactions during the final reveal. Some were coached to express more amazement and enthusiasm between takes. The overhaul process, which appeared on the show to only last a few days or weeks, actually lasted 67 months, and the show's participants had to find their own transportation while their cars were being upgraded with no support from the network. In addition, the modifications made to the cars were often purely cosmetic and any problems with how the car ranwheel alignment, engine, transmissionwas still up to the participants to fix.[3] In an interview with HipHopDX, Xzibit explains about how he was the target of backlash on social media over his involvement in the show, even though he was merely the host and had no input in the actual vehicle modification.[4]

The behind the scenes stuff for the show is such a mess. A lot of people that got their car "pimped out" ended up in a worst position than before like the car would be unusable; they would had to tear down the stuff, and make the car unsellable. Also a lot of it was fake as well because the cars wouldn't even function right. It was purely all cosmetic.

And of course, they added cosmetic features that would actually make the car *worse* to drive, or sometimes even undriveable. It's just crazy - as a kid, I thought it would be so cool to have a working Playstation in the back of a car, but as an adult, you realize there's no point to having that, because a car is meant for, you know *driving*, not chilling and having a good time in.

I suppose simply finding people with beat-up cars and fixing the engine/transmission/breaks/batteries/AC is just not as interesting as putting a playstation in their car

The show was a guilty pleasure of mines on MTV. The fact that it was so over the top is what made me enjoy it. I tried watching a clip of it and I only realize just how overly over produced it is and how a lot of the times you can tell the producers told the people who to react because it would either be over the top or they would all would react the exact same way as another person on another episode. It's the type of stuff you don't catch on when you're a kid lol.

Oh yeah, I liked it as a kid. I didn't watch it regularly but I did enjoy it when I saw it.

It just reminds me of how I need to be far more forgiving when my students (I'm a high school teacher) laugh at stupid things, or act immaturely, or jump on board some stupid-ass meme and giggle about it like a bunch of, well, kids.

If I ever think it's stupid for kids to walk around and laugh just cause someone says the numbers 6 and 7 back-to-back, then I guess I have to remind myself that I once thought that having a monitor with a connectable PSX in the trunk of a car was the coolest thing ever.

Accurate, in a bored moment or two (especially over Covid) I saw a few exposes on this.

The screens etc were generally removed after filming, and the vehicles often remained fundamentally mechanically unsound.

I had something kinda like this.... My father at the time had an old 1960s coke vending machine he used to help his alcoholism by filling it entirely with beers. BUT, that shit was the coolest and I was very interested in the _vending machine_.

(Not an image of the same machine, but this was pretty much what it was) https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/a/abc5a329.jpg

My family mistook that as interest for coca cola... the brand.

I got nothing but coke themed shit as a gift for like 3 fucking years from my entire family. I bet they STILL think I like coke that much lmao.
