They knew they were part of history. They knew they had never seen anything like it. There was nothing like it in the history books. It just didnt seem humanly possible.

So how could they express what Shohei Ohtani just did in front of a frenzied sellout crowd of 52,883 that screamed and cheered so loud that Dodger Stadium actually shook?

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/10/18/shohei-ohtani-dodgers-nlcs-world-series/86764623007/

People are saying it is like watching Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game live.

Ohtani became the first player in history to hit three home runs, strike out 10 batters and pitch six shutout innings.

21 players players have hit 4 HRs in a single game (including THREE TIMES this season), which is the all-time single game record.

Because of injuries to his throwing arm, he's better known for hitting at this point in his career (he didn't throw a single pitch last year and still won NL MVP; he was the first player in MLB history to hit 50 HRs and steal 50 bases in the same season) so the three HRs part isn't really surprising from him but the fact that it came in a pennant-clinching playoff game where he was also the starting pitcher of record AND pitched exceptionally well is what people are excited about. It was among the highest stakes of the season and baseball's biggest and most unique star had the best game of his 8-yr MLB career.

It was the kind of performance that fans and sportswriters dream about witnessing.

Not really. There is always some degree of concern after a player returns from a 2nd Tommy John surgery but the Dodgers really couldn't have re-acclimated him to the mound any better than they did (he started pitching in June with an inning here and there and by the end of the season was able to go his routine 6 innings) and he returned to his overpowering form quickly enough. I only mentioned the injuries because him being unable to pitch last year was a major story and he responded by producing the highest ever single-season hitting WAR for a Designated Hitter.

While he is famous for being a singularly unique (in the post 1920 "live ball era") two-way player, I think he'd easily be on a Hall of Fame track for his hitting alone. While he is a supremely talented pitcher (not many guys have his wide repertoire and those that do typically don't throw as hard), his injuries have somewhat derailed the hype around that part of his game despite putting up fairly consistent results when he does so. In effect, he has been a top 3 hitter for most of his MLB career and has the pitching talent of a top 10 starter, but injuries have limited his availability to do so on multiple occasions (and why he isn't on that HoF pace as a pitcher), hence why I believe he's better regarded for hitting than pitching, which was my original point that I took way too long to get back to lol.

That said, his aforementioned uniqueness and ability to be dominant in both roles has essentially assured him a place in Cooperstown already. The Babe Ruth comparisons aren't even appropriate because Ruth's prodigious hitting didn't fully emerge until after he had stopped pitching full-time (1917 was his last season as a full-time pitcher and 1919 was his first "WTF" seasons as a batter). Ohtani is dominating as a batter and a pitcher simultaneously.

Since no one really answered this, no pitcher in MLB history had ever hit two home runs in a single postseason game.

Theyll absolutely have a chance. Baseball is the one sport that is more prone to luck and circumstance than any of the other major sports in the US. Poorly hit bloop hits. A ball takes a weird bounce on a routine grounder. A normally reliable pitcher hangs a breaking ball. A normally subpar pitcher just has it clicking one night.

In all of their series this year, the Dodgers went 31-18-4. They won 31 series, lost 18 and split 4 of them. And they lost some of those series to bad teams. They were swept by teams like the Angels and Pirates. Hell, the Dodgers went winless in 6 games against the very Brewers that they just swept.

In the NFL or NBA, it would turn heads if the worst team beat the best team in a single game. In baseball, the worst team can beat the best team multiple times and nobody will blink about it. Thats just baseball. There is a hint of randomness to it.

And on top of all of that, it isn't like the Mariners or Jays are a collection of scrubs. Theyre very good teams as well. Will the Dodgers be favored? Sure, and they should be. But nobody should be shocked if they lose.

NFL: If he was a QB, he went 26 for 32 with 400+ yards and 3 TDs. Oh, and he also played defense, had 2 sacks and a pick-6.

NBA: Harder comparison because everyone plays two ways. It isnt out of the norm to have a great offensive and defensive game. I guess it might be if someone like Shaq had his normal dominant inside game, but then also decided to go 7 for 9 from deep, all while having like 7 blocks and 5 steals.
