I'll be a renter til the day I die.

I accepted a long time ago that I will never own a home where I live.

It comes with its fair share of challenges and expenses, but on the whole it is nice to own a home. Good luck getting into a position where you can afford to own and maintain one.

Yeah. Fully paid off too. Prices even today are still reasonable in my area of the Midwest. We have had a few guys at work in their late 20's buy houses the last couple years. It's like a cheat code to financial freedom in the flyover states because so many people don't like winters and the lack of entertainment in these low population areas. I'm cool with it.

No. I tried to be a few years ago but it was brutal. Went in on multiple houses just under the amount I had been approved for on a loan, watched them all sell for 120%+ (often higher) of the listing price, never had a chance.
Just gave up after a while.

Yes. It's mostly nice apart from repairs and the lack of liquidity. I like having an enclosed yard and no HOA. I'm fortunate the mortgage is from 2021 so historically low.

From a financial standpoint, I'd have been better off putting the down payment in a low cost index fund and not touching it but it's a lifestyle choice we made and the dog was happy.

No that is not the reason. As someone from the NE I prefer not living in a red state where Id fear my rights would be taken away.

As for the topic. I own a home, its paid off.

That might be your reason but the most common stated reason I know from many is in fact winters and nothing to do. There is a shit load of people that live in red states in the south in expensive areas and they don't want to deal with the weather "up north"

Besides that there are in fact other blue states in the Midwest flyover areas. I'm not in one but rural Illinois isn't much different than rural Iowa. North parts of Iowa aren't vastly different than southern parts of rural Minnesota. It isn't all just some large red area. So my point still stands about the economics and many peoples refusal to live in flyover country. The reality is there are people that will never live in Minnesota or Illinois and will choose to struggle in some expensive place because they don't want to deal with the weather, or in the case of the rural areas the lack of things to do. Like most people who are blue from California or Austin Texas aren't going to a low cost of living area in the Midwest even if it is blue. They aren't giving up that weather and entertainment/eating options.

Own my home outright.

Now spending a fortune on extensions and doing the place up. When it's finished, it will be exactly what I want, but it's a bit chaotic meantime.
