Did they forget to advertise it? I had no idea it existed.

They advertised it a bit.

I saw ads for it on YouTube a few times over the last month.

They were on Kimmel earlier this week.

Yeah, I think I heard buzz about it like a year or so ago when production was going on, but not too much outside of that. Granted, I've never seen the original and have no interest in it, so I haven't exactly been giving it much thought.

I feel like there's a better than even chance the new one will be shit, but the first one was great.

Streaming services hunger for content. Hollywood is basically pumping out like a hundred times the amount of product made by people with about a tenth of the talent, because SOMETHING needs to help fill all that time and trick people into paying for subscriptions.

The first thing I thought when I saw they were doing it was that it was just another shameless content-filling nostalgia-farming project, like with Netflix throwing a quarter of a billion at Adam Sandler to make pretty much anything, or Hulu and Amazon taking advantage of nearly 100-yer old dottering old man Mel Brooks to get him to sign off on History of the World Part 2 and Spaceballs 2.

But apparently in the case of Spinal Tap, it's something all of the guys involved actually wanted to do for pretty much forever, but it was tied up in legal rights BS for like 30 years. And after they finally got the rights back, they mostly did it themselves, for themselves. So it's less of a cynical cash-grab, and more a bunch of old dudes just wanting to have fun together again. And I can respect that. If nothing else, it has way more soul and artistic merit than most of the rest of what's coming out these days.

That being said, that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be good. Creative types often lose their spark and their touch as they get older (*cough*George Lucas*cough*Prequels*cough*), and Christopher Guest has been retired from acting for like a decade now. So it could be complete shit. But it might be good, because it does feel like something they wanted to do, and not just something a studio told them they had to do because it could potentially be profitable.
