I dunno, if you assume we don't get that content without paying extra, which is the only reasonable assumption, it doesn't really matter to me when we learn about it.

We never really had additional mini campaigns out of the box, except in a couple of odd cases (Fire Emblem 7 comes to mind). If they exist at all, you've generally paid extra for them, whether that was an expansion pack, an enhanced port or a director's cut, or DLC.

I'm just glad I'm not into competitive garbage at all. I'd be mad if half or more of the roster were paywalled, and here I am trying to win but I have literally never seen this character before.

"Announcing" is really the only part of this that's in any way strange.

It's been well established for years that DLC is planned out well ahead of launch, often times very early in the game's development. Game developers who aren't tiny indie studios need to allocate resources and funds and project potential profits, so they already know long before the game hits shelves how many pieces of DLC are going to be made and, roughly, what's going to be in them.

We have long, long, long passed the era where DLC was "some extra goodies" that the developers wanted to add in the base game but couldn't because they ran out of time/budget. Now it's just extra money for them - a way to increase the price tag of the game, but do so in a way that the majority of their customers won't notice or complain about, because people are far more likely to buy a $60 game and 10 $5 DLC packages than they are an $85 game with the same content.

Hey, you have know nothings defending paid DLC for other unreleased games, I remember back when Borderlands 4 announced that they were going to add playable characters and story missions as DLC making the game cost $120+, people defended that shit.

For the record, do not take this as a defense of Nintendo, this is me saying that this fanboy defense is not only to be expected, it is unfortunately the norm in this shitheap of the AAA industry.

Nintendo was literally the last company to even adopt DLC. It was a fairly big criticism of the Wii.

Sure, but in this case, the day 1 dlc is 2 mega evolutions. When other mega evolutions are already in the game.

And it also doesn't help that the mega evolution for the gen 6 starters can only be obtained via online ranked battle seasons. So some content locked behind dlc and some content locked behind paying for NSO and having limited time availability.

I mean technically its not that bad. Do people think games are worked on by the full team up to release date? There is usually a few month gap of the game being done for manufacturing and shipping. During that time they can do more QA, but that wont use the full team. They could let the team work on the next game, or make DLC.

If it's stuff like character skins or other dumb content that could have just been unlockable in the game then that's pretty BS.

If it's stuff like expansion packs then I think it's fine, helps give you an idea of what post-release support the game is going to be receiving.

Not crazy for it, but it was inevitable. Nintendo is behind on the good and bad practices the other companies have implemented, for better or worse, but they eventually catch up. Even this DK Bananza dlc shows this is a wildly different Nintendo than the one from Year 1 Switch when they refused to add dlc to Odyssey despite us all begging and crying for them to make us pay extra money (outside of Luigi's Balloon World, which is fun, but was a free bonus along with the free costumes).

The DK Bananza dlc looks neat, but it's crazy to think Nintendo thinks this is comparable to around a 1/3 of what was a very-packed base game, in terms of price-to-content.

The worst part is the game that needs some dlc to help liven it up, Mario Kart World, is probably going to be ignored because Nintendo made the weird decision to release two arcade-like racers in the same year. If MKWorld even gets dlc, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see it until 2026.

Nintendo not doing something in the past has no bearing on current day Nintendo.

Nintendo was always behind the curve so it was only a matter of time they got involved into DLC to the level that other companies are at.

But I will say, Pokemon always had additional gated content. It used to be you had to go to in person events to get special pokemon. Then when internet became more commonplace, it felt like pokemon was making many of these events free and more available. Now we have pokemon locking special pokemon and items behind paywalls, though this started last gen with S/V.

weirdly enough even back then they DID make DLC, but for BotW (and also costed too much compared to base)

it's.........both, somehow. The mega kalos starters are locked behind online ranking promotion stuff, while the mega Raichus are locked behind DLC when they should've just been unlockable normally. Then they're making extra story content in february but we know nothing about it

This is how gamers were tricked into paying $120 for a $60 game (which probably lasts for 20 hours).
