Mass Effect 2. Works so well as a sequel, in the ways it expands the setting and brings back characters. Plus, judging from the popularity of it compared to the first game, you could enjoy it without having played the first. And that's ignoring the quality of the game itself, which earned it the place of being one of the highest rated games of all time.

I just think it's a near perfect continuation. It does a lot more than being just "the next mass effect game".

I thought it was the worst of the 3, but I was not fond of how it pushed the shooter aspect considerably more and adding things like thermal clips.

Mass Effect 2 gets my vote.

It's my least favourite of the 3 too, but I think it works best as a sequel.

Micro Machines 2 was a banger.

Suikoden 2 and Shadow Hearts Covenant (SH2).

Between Mass Effect 2 and Dark Souls III for me. Assuming unrelated sequels like the bulk of the FF series arent being counted.

If prequels count, change that first one to Yakuza 0.

SoR1 is playable (and is at worst SoR2's equal in terms of soundtrack), but the gameplay and presentation in SoR2 are practically in a different galaxy from SoR1

Does the entire library of Trails games count after Sky? Because it's damn impressive.

There's a lot that are big step ups from their predecessors. For more story-based games there's MGS4 and Kingdom Hearts 2. There's also SWAT 2, SimCity 2000, Oregon Trail 2, and SmackDown 2.

Overall best game that's a sequel... I'd say Xenosaga III. Maybe MGS4

In terms of a sequel that just literally did every single thing way better, Nioh 2 takes the cake for me.

It's gotta be SF2. It completely eclipses the original, defines a genre, and still sees play in various updated rereleases to this very day.

I will add Diablo 2 to this.

Octopath Traveler 2. It basically is Octopath Traveler 1 but better in virtually every aspect. There are better games that happen to be sequels, but I can't think of any that is nearly a perfect improvement over the first. Most sequels usually do something worse than their predecessor.

Well the truth is they were originally supposed to be one game, it's just the devs were a little too ambitious. And they still get that way at times.

If anything, I thought Trails in the Sky the 3rd was the best of the three, but it also was largely benefit from the first two chapters to make any sort of sense and give a lot of what happens in it meaning.

Especially Star Door 14, which set up the meta arc for the entire series and gave context to what happened in the first two chapters. And we only recently finally met the Grandmaster at that, and everything we've learned about her and the Society really paints Weissman as a huge outlier among them.
