It's been a long time since I've replayed it, I'm not sure if my opinion of it would change if I did. It felt like such a unique game, in some ways that I loved, and some ways that I didn't.

Awesome game, by far the best in the series, and the only one that's truly unique (though BoF4 could've been great if you played as Fou-Lu for more than an hour...)

Better than I expected

Only played 1 & 2 so far, and was unimpressed enough to say I wouldn't be interested in playing more if I didn't hear they got better. (and one of the ps1 games looks visually very good)

3 and 4 are fairly similar to 1 and 2 design wise. 5 is the only real departure

Never played a Breath of Fire game

Played 1 and 3, myself. This was one I always had some interest in but I think the odds of me going back and playing a PS2 RPG are pretty low at this point. Suikoden V is higher priority and has been on that backlog for like 10+ years now

Great game. Very creative take on a JRPG mixing resource management, spatial combat (the traps are very powerful, especially when your weapons are weak!), and roguelike elements. It's weird, but it's special. The setting is excellent - you have nowhere to go but up and that provides the direction and energy. The background tracks on the OST are incredible and well deployed (the electric power building track feels so appropriate for exploring a cavernous power plant). I'd say it's Sakimoto's best OST. The ant colony building sidequest is a good diversion too.

I also like that the dialogue is pared back. I think the total effect of the enclosed setting, cel-shading, instrumental music, and sparse characterisation is very effective (this is a bit hard to describe, but it gets across how isolated the mute protagonist is).

Also this game is so radically different from the first four that it's essentially a spin off. It's not popular with many fans of 1-4 who didn't like it because it's weird nature and lack of success are seen as killing the series off.
