isn't it depressing that AI is now making people question writing styles? what would be really nice is if AI models had to end every statement with something denoting it as AI slop.

AbsolutelyId love that! Creating a well-rounded list of strengths and weaknesses of AI writing styles would be super helpful.
To get started, could you clarify a bit what you have in mind:
  • Scope: Are you thinking broadlylike AI-generated blog content, marketing copy, academic writingor something more specific?
  • Format: Would you prefer a table, a detailed bullet list, or perhaps grouped by use-case (e.g., content creation, editing, summarization)?
  • Tone: Should it be casual and conversational, academic and formal, or tailored to a specific audience?
Once I know what you're aiming for, I can draft a comprehensive and clear overview.

This. Can't wait to be accused of using AI solely because I knew how to manipulate the English language structure better than virtually everyone I have to communicate with at work.

I suspect 99%+ of the people submitting unedited AI articles to wikipedia will never ever look at that guidelines page

this post did make me sort of curious though and I went over to chatgpt to see if I could get it to write something that resembles my own posting style on gfaqs. Turns out I sort of can? I don't think it's perfect and wouldn't fool people (although maybe I'm just biased since obviously I can tell my own writing apart from an AI) but it's better than I expected. I imagine you could do some finetuned training on all my posts ever and it would turn out pretty good

chatgpt version of me, apparently:
sometimes I catch myself reading something online and wondering if a person actually wrote it. The rhythm feels natural, the word choice feels casual, and yet I cant quite shake the question. its strange how close the two have become

Ive noticed people try to point out patterns as proof. Theyll say things like too polished or too repetitive means it wasnt written by a person. But honestly, Ive seen friends write that way too, especially when theyre tired or just trying to sound professional

there are also those moments where the text avoids taking a strong stance. Some people call that a giveaway. Personally, I think it just reflects how a lot of us actually talk when we dont want to offend anyone

Ive tried using those online detectors before. They felt unreliable. One time a paragraph I wrote myself came back flagged as automated, which made me laugh more than anything else

in the end I think its less about finding the exact answer and more about deciding whether it matters. if Im reading something helpful or interesting, I dont always care where it came from

Every version of Word Ive used will autocorrect two hyphens into an em dash, so theyre really not that hard to use.

Overuse of em dashes
edit
For non-AI-specific guidance about the use of dashes, see Wikipedia:Manual of Style Dashes.

Shortcut
WP:AIDASH
AI chatbots use the em dash () more frequently than most editors do, especially in places where human authors are much more likely to use parentheses or commas. AI chatbots may or may not add a space before and after the dash.
The article got the most important part. Props.

Avoid the em dash like the plague guys.

Edit: Oh, this has been mentioned a bunch already? Well, you guys are sharp. As a suggestions, when using AI to proof papers, ask it not to use em dashes.

Personally, I use it for when a character is being cut off when they are saying something, which feels natural. AI tends to use it a lot in the middle of sentences.

We can't just discard punctuation simply because AI is ruining it.

The em dash is appropriate for clear breaks in thought. That being said, parenthesis work just as well if putting those thoughts between commas would be too long.

I feel the same way about the em dash as I do about the semicolon, which is that for basically anything you can do with it, you're better off just using something else instead.

This is terrible because a lot of the AI generated examples honestly just seemed like things I would write and phrases I would use when I wasn't lazy and actually cared about getting a point across clearly.

And I mean terrible because that means I wouldn't be able to truly recognize if a block of text was actually created by an AI or not.

The em dash is useful but when used the way GPT tends to use it, it has a certain combination of perky informality and pedantic attention to detail that I find very irritating

I feel similarly about almost all these traits of the standard GPT style. It distilled the average of all English writing, which turns out to be the American middlebrow, business-casual style of mediocre prose found on blogs, op eds, ad copy, high school essays, etc.
