Other countries do it too. Mexico City is one. Many are in their native language.

Leningrad means Lenin City
Dusseldorf means Dussel Village
Ciudad Real means Royal City
Lots of French towns and villages contain the word "ville"

Look at Britain

"Ford" meant it was by a ford.

"Minster" was a religious community.

Ham and Tun was just village. Feld was Field, etc

In the UK, 'city' is an official designation. It used to be that a place had to have a cathedral to be a city, but now they just need a Royal Charter.

I reckon the various founders of US cities used the word because they wanted the settlement to be recognised as big and important from the start.

You go your whole life in the US being taught that a city is a big place, a town is somewhere smaller, and a village is somewhere smaller still, and then the British come along with their pants on their head yet again.

Well yeah. You of all people should have expected no less.

St David's (population under 2,000) is a city because it has a cathedral. Bolton and Reading (population 250,000) are towns because they don't have a cathedral or the say so of the King.

They want to be cities. They keep asking if they can be cities. But they keep getting told to fuck off.
