Black disabled veteran says hes blessed to be alive after being shot in the chest in broad daylight on Seattles waterfront last month. Powell was well known in the area for playing music along the boardwalk. Now, his family is asking the community for support.

According to reports, 32-year-old Gregory Timm walked up to Harold Powell, 68, and accused the Navy vet of stolen valor, claiming Powell never served in the military. Powell denied the claims, offering to show Timm his military ID. Video of the attack shows Timm ripping a military patch off Powells wheelchair. Feeling threatened, Powell then wheels toward Timm and reaches inside his shirt, according to KIRO 7. Timm then steps back, retrieves a handgun from a bag, and shoots Powell in the chest, leaving witnesses shocked.

Timm was detained and arrested at the scene and Powell was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he miraculously recovered. The bullet cracked his ribs, but did not strike any vital organs.

[Doctors] didnt believe it, after all these X-rays, that I can live after being shot like that, said Powell.

Video of the horrific attack has since gone viral on social media. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump tweeted about the shooting, demanding justice for Powell.

Thankfully, Powell survived. The violence against this Navy veteran demands accountability, he wrote on X.

Powell says hes not going to give Timm much thought and instead, hes focused on his family.

I refuse to complain, and Im not going to let this guy, nothing about this guy, live in my mind rent-free, he told KFVS.

Although Powells spirits are high, he has a rough road to recovery. His family has set up a GoFundMe to support Powell during his trying times.

Our dad has always been the protector for his country, for his family, and for his community. Hes one of those people who gives what little he has to help others. Hes a fighter, but this time, he needs all of us to fight for him, the Powell family wrote.

As of right now he's only charged with first degree assault. Also, was charged in Florida with ramming a Trump polling place, so clearly the guys a nutjob

he's going to claim he was just standing his ground. i'm not sure how that makes sense when you're the one who starts the confrontation and then escalates it to physical violence, but that's going to be his claim.

People like that piece of trash, Timm, make me reconsider my dislike of the death penalty.

huh, for some reason i though it was florida, maybe because honestly it sounds like a florida thing...

oh, its because of the bit at the end about his actions in florida.

quick lookup suggests though that they have a "no duty to retreat" rule, which plays very similar to a stand your ground law.

Yeah I asked google if it was a stand your ground state and didn't realize it gave me an AI overview that just said something factually wrong

Stolen valor content is enraging and I can only think of a few examples I've seen where the most pathetic, obnoxious person in these videos isn't the guy doing the accusing. Whenever I see content like that I never get the impression that they're proud patriots trying to defend the dignity of servicemen.

Our dumb culture of military worship is largely responsible for this and when you look at it objectively it gets even dumber.

Eh, we don't have a explicitly written stand your ground law... but we also don't have a duty to retreat law though so really you're allowed any "reasonable" self defense.

Washington's not an SYG state, and generally, you don't get to claim self-defense if you're the initial aggressor.

no duty to retreat is functionally the same as a stand your ground law. and a lawyer will argue that while the verbal confrontation was started by the asshole he then walked away and the victim started approaching, so they'd argue that there's two separate events essentially.

eh, depends really. remember that asshole who shot a man in a movie theatre because he had popcorn thrown at him? jury sided with him.

you've got to keep in mind that being on a jury means you see a fraction of the actual evidence and hear only curated portions of the story and events. a good defense lawyer can spin truly stupid events into an argument that confuses the jury enough to make them rule in their favor.

Assault in the first degree.
(1) A person is guilty of assault in the first degree if he or she, with intent to inflict great bodily harm:
(a) Assaults another with a firearm or any deadly weapon or by any force or means likely to produce great bodily harm or death; or

Washington doesn't appear to have an attempted murder charge.

I bet the shooter was mad because the guy was an actual veteran and he probably washed-out of basic training or got rejected entirely.

Shooter is a coward. I guess he couldn't accept that a person with dark skin is 10x the man he is. The erasure of our history, and trying to make our heroes into villains is pure evil. I could not care less what color their is, if they fought to protect their country and in turn, protected me and my family, I'll respect them.
