Never worked retail. Only worked fast food as a high school teenager for a couple years. I piled up all my hours on Friday after school and then all day on Saturday and Sunday. It wasn't over 30 hours. Never had that job after the age of 17.

I would get plenty of hours in fast food. They would routinely make me work 14 hour shifts when someone would get sent home or not show up. All you have to do is to show up on time, have a car, and have a flexible schedule. If you have that, youre instantly a very important asset

The last time I had consistent hours in retail was right before the pandemic. No retail/food service employers in my area are remotely interested in giving full-time hours unless it's for management positions.

I got 40 hours at my grocery store for the last 5 months I worked there before quitting. It was because the manager of my department who had worked there for 15 years suddenly got transfered after a bunch of suits reorginized our store... And I was the only person left in that department lmao

And even funnier, apparently the last two months after they hired more help they meant to bump my hours back down to 30 but the management there was always screwing up my schedule so I thought the less hours on it was just a screw up. And nobody in management was paying attention to how long I was working or had the bright idea to, yknow, TELL me in person my hours were getting cut. So I worked full time until my very last day then got to leave early on the last day lol

I work at Walmart and never had my hours reduced below 40. Full timers always have a set 40 hours.

I get a set schedule/times and full 40. But, getting FT is easier said then done. PTs get hour cuts and work random days. Depending upon the area you work random shift times. I know our PT sales associates often have to work in the morning. Though nobody ever complains about working mornings as 7-4 is a god-tier shift time.

I tried to work as little as possible when I was doing retail, since I was a full time student.

I think I was going for like 8-12 hours a week at one point lol.

When I worked stock at a grocery store they kept us pretty consistent at 36-39.5 hours. About once a month you'd get a flat 40, but couldn't have that too often or they'd have to give us benefits.

nope @ Macy's.
When I initially joined as a seasonal associate, my manager did want me on the manger development program, but the uppers of the company didn't have it in the cards to accommodate retaining me at that store. Nothing personal, but just the (objectively given events over time, failing) system.

Yeah, I worked at 2 different McDonald's and a Zippy's where I always had 5 8 hour days every week. Then they just take off 30 minutes per day for lunch, so 37.5 hours a week. The days I worked varied, but the hours were consistent.

I could get full time if I wanted, which would be 37 hours a week, but thats more than I want. So as it is my hours vary. This week is 14, next week is 19, the week after is somehow only 10.

Back in the early 2000s, I worked at Blockbuster. I got yelled at by management (not in a bad way, more in a Hey could you please not do that kinda way) because I was working 40+ hours per week and getting overtime.

I dont remember what my typical work week would be, but I would just make it really well known to my coworkers that if they wanted time off, Id more than likely be willing to take their hours. Other people were willing to take them too, but I just made it super well known, so people would seek me out if they needed a day off.

As a Shift/MoD you have no idea how valuable it is to have someone that picks up shifts that is actually reliable. There are few things in retail more frustrating than coming in to see someone switched with a person that you just know either outright sucks or is going to be late if they even show up at all

I had a co-worker that kept switching shifts so he'd get a friday off. Well see then he goes and calls in on the day he swapped too leaving us short handed. He eventually got fired.
