Agree on the Chakra thing for sure. S1 finale was another one I felt at the time was very rushed.

Also Azula just killing the fuck out of Aang in the middle of his power-up sequence ruled

Gotta respect Azula as an efficient villainess. Somehow managed to take over the enemy capital with just two of her friends and then when it comes to the main threat she just goes for her best move in a sneak attack rather than waiting for him to finish powering up lol

They tried to do so much so fast in the finale, but it's hard to criticize since it turned out so awesome. It's definitely silly in retrospect. But then you remember the alternative is modern prestige TV where barely anything happens in an entire 55 minute episode. (Honestly curious how the live action S2 will do this sequence.)

And really, would a whole extra episode of Aang opening chakras really help? I appreciate that they went with all the actual chakras and didn't try to simplify it to like 3.

Probably not a full episode, but I feel like they could have done a three-part finale rather than two-part and given each of the plot threads (including the chakras) more time to breathe.

Two lines of dialogue and a five second flashback with an accompanying "chakra unlocked" chime was just goofy.

Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Rogaine.
Long ago, the five nations lived in hair-mony.
Then, everything changed when the razor nation attacked.
Only the Avatar, master of all five hairstyles, could stop them.
But when the world needed him most, his hairline receded.
A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, a hairbender named Aang.
And although his styling skills are great, he still has a lot to learn before hes ready to shave anyone.
But I believe Aang can shave the world.

Two eps into S3

-I'm not exactly sure what Aang's goal is now. I assume he's looking for a firebending master, but doesn't he know the location of one already? And wasn't that dude outside the fire nation?

-I feel like it's weird that no one has reacted to Toph metalbending, something that was previously thought impossible

-Azula willing to give away credit for killing the avatar just on the off-chance he might have survived so that Zuko will be disgraced. Wild.

-Sokka's beard disguise proves hairbending is real

This is excellent.

Watched episodes 3 and 4 a few days ago but forgot to post.

-It's kinda weird that after making a big deal about being behind schedule, the very next day is Sokka spending a few days learning how to make a sword. They must be like a week behind schedule at this point.

-I know some liberties have to be taken, but Sokka learning how to use a sword in like two days is silly. But hey, at least there'll be more variety to what he can do now.

-I want to know what Iroh's prison workout routine is. Dude got ripped in no time.

If Sokka hadn't been born in an igloo at the South Pole he would've invented steam power or a cure for cancer or something. Dude is a genius held back by poverty. Yes it's a little unrealistic to go from beginner to sword master in 2 days but he's not lacking in mental capacity.

I think it's more that there's a strong theme in this show about doing things the right way being key to unimaginable growth. And part of that is having an imaginative mind that is tapped into the spirits. When Toph discovered metalbending it was very clear that it's not just that she's the best earthbender, but that she does "real" spiritual earthbending that has been forgotten by modern practitioners. Sokka basically did the same with sword fighting, and other characters have their own examples.

A beach episode. This truly is an anime.

Toph tells Aang to cover up his tattoos...how does she know? Man, what a dumb way to blow his cover.

Conveniently the dude Zuko sent is able to intercept the hawk because he's been waiting around for this exact situation, apparently.

Not even the avatar can fight against third eye lasers. I was not expecting that to be this dude's gimmick.

Character development for the fire nation crew. Well, maybe except Azula. The final photo was pretty great.

The Avatar and The Firelord

Good episode. Wasn't expecting the great-grandfather reveal. There's some things left out of the story that I assume will come up later, but we'll see.

Forgot to mention this in the previous episode, but I like that they've kept Aang's scar from getting bolted by Azula. Kinda weird that his spirit for some reason has his normal clothes and shaved head. What are the rules there?

Also it took Roku 12 years to train, while the Aang crew is out here mastering things in a few months. I know he's sort of shown to be more powerful, but he doesn't seem that much more powerful.

Aang is supposed to be one of the most powerful avatars (especially due to his deep spirit world connection from airbending) but it's also evident that Aang's non-airbending training is very surface level compared to other avatars. Roku died bending a literal volcano, and almost succeeded.

Watched episodes 7 and 8 of S3

I liked the montage of Toph scamming people. How does Combustion Man know about Toph's metalbending such that he arranged for her to be thrown in a wooden cell? Also why does a city that generally only has firebenders even have such a cell?

Katara sweatbending feels like the sort of thing that probably inspired weird fetish material online.

The Puppetmaster was a top-tier episode. I knew about bloodbending prior to watching so it wasn't a huge surprise, but I didn't know when it would come up. The build-up/reveal was really well done, and the fight between Katara and Hama was cool. I like she manipulated Katara into using bloodbending in the end, though declaring her a bloodbender in front of the fire nation people apprehending her was pretty questionable.

Toph used metalbending against Dai Li agents when they were loyal to Azula and against that Fire Nation ship when they were on their stolen ship, so it was certainly at least somewhat known within the Fire Nation by then. Even if Zuko doesn't know, we saw the Combustion Man intercept military communications so he might have learned it that way.

FWIW, and yes 2 days is still silly, but sokka is legit a master with his boomerang so he does already have the good coordination and reflexes that would go into swordsmanship. Also "Master" is a bit of an oversell since he demonstrates in his test fight that he's still not nearly on the master's level. What makes him so good at swordsmanship is just applying skills he already had to it, like fighting dirty, situational awareness, etc. But the actual sword part, iirc it's not like he was out there on an equal playing field, he was still very much inferior to his master at the actual sword part of it.

Watched the dream/nightmare episode and the (failed) invasion.

The nightmare episode mostly felt like filler. The one thing that bugs me...they got to the meeting point four full days ahead of time? Sokka's schedule was bullshit.

Pretty small invasion force, but I guess there weren't too many water bender soldiers left to begin with. Kinda preferred hairbender Aang, so sad to see him go back to his old look.

Where the hell were they keeping those subs?

Where the hell were they keeping those tanks?

Man, team Aang sure did a bad job of taking on an unarmed Azula. They even spent like a full minute out of eight talking about how it was a distraction to waste their time.

Zuko confronts his dad and surprisingly doesn't try to take him on. Also he gets to finally use that lightning redirection Iroh taught him.

Did Iroh also know the invasion was that day or was it just coincidence that he chose to bust out? Zuko decides to pursue the Avatar crew despite him being in a hot air balloon, which I'm pretty sure is slower than the airships that Azula said were too slow to pursue Appa.
