I once had a bat get into my house. The spkiest part about it is, once I returned with a rolled-up newspaper, it had completely disappeared, ne'er to be seen again.

Fuck bats.

IIRC you should get checked for rabies ASAP if you encountered a bat in your home

or maybe it's just if they actually touch you? Can't remember.

If it's in your house and you just stumbled upon it, its highly advised to go get checked for rabies or get a shot. Especially if you were sleeping and don't know when it entered

Any doctor would tell you to get Rabies shots ASAP. Don't mess around with that.

So the logic is that if a bat was in your house and you don't actually see it come in.... then you have no idea what it was doing when you were asleep and how long its been there. Bats can also pass it through claws and saliva and leave not much of a mark

even an errant scratch can be enough, and you're not necessarily going to notice one if the thing scratched you in your sleep. once symptoms start its too late to get the vaccine, so your chance of surviving goes way down and relies on a quasi experimental protocol that's only saved something like 20 people.

They have to touch you to spread it unless you do something insane like eat their poop while it's still warm.

I had this happen a couple times in a top-floor apartment with a fireplace. My cats were staring at the fireplace like total creeps for like an hour and we had no idea what the hell they were doing until it finally emerged.

Chimney seems way more likely to me, might have some mesh or grillwork that needs to be repaired at the top.
