Castlevania Anniversary is great for the classic series, but notably lacks one of the best entries, Rondo of Blood. Still totally worth it for 1, 3, 4, and Bloodlines. Most people seem to prefer the metroidvania titles and for those your better off with the Advance or Dominus collections, or Symphony of the Night. I'd argue that 4 is the best starting point. It gives a general idea of how the series plays up until 12, and the entire game can be finished in maybe 20-30 hours. Is it the best Final Fantasy? No. But it's probably my favourite 2D Final Fantasy. If you want a modern 2.5D Final Fantasy experience, you can't go wrong with either of the Octopath Traveller games. People dont seem to LOVE it because the story isnt as bombastic, but i think it is good. I love the characters, their chemistry. They feel like they are really good friends as the game goes on. Bartz is one of the best protagonists. He might not have a brooding backstory, but he is fun, a little dorky, friendly, and a good leader. A proto-Zidane. Ex-Death is a fun villain, because he just loves what he does. He is intimidating, but also extremely petty. He actually does the stupid thing where people say why doesnt the villain just ______ and _____ the heroes? And he does. And the game has plenty of twists as well. Major character deaths. Some good sidequests. Some funny mechanics like the Chicken Sword. Super bosses. Not saying that you were hating on 5, I just think it deserves to be mentioned with 4 and 5. Final Fantasy 4-7 is a legendary run of games quite frankly, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. 9 and 10 are also easy 10/10s. 4 is possibly the purest essence of the franchise. It's almost generic only because of how it codified so many elements of the franchise that are still drawn upon today. Cait has said everything that needs to be said about 5. I've heard it described as your favourite person's favourite FF game and I think that sticks. 6 is still considered one of the high points of the franchise by people who weren't even alive when this game was made. The story is great, the characters are great, the artwork is great (if we ignore the mobile remake), the music is some of Uematsu's best and Kefka is easily a top 3 antagonist in the entire franchise. The team was firing on all cylinders. 7 is the most popular for reasons beyond nostalgia, it's another great game. The visuals have aged very poorly, but everything else about the game still holds up imo. It is kinda interesting seeing how the characters have changed as the setting got expanded. If you can get past the art style, this is actually another great entry point into the franchise. As a side note, the remakes are fantastic imo but I can't recommend them as a starting point. The story is still incomplete and they quite frankly do rely on knowledge of the OG. 8 hasn't been mentioned here and while I love it, it is hard to recommend to newbies. There are quite a lot of flaws and quirks. My personal favourite though. 9 is a love letter to the 2D games. It's absolutely a 10/10 game, but you may miss a bunch of the references if you've not played the others. That said, it absolutely stands on its own with some of the strongest characters in the franchise. This is the game if you want a traditional FF game in 3D. 10 is almost certainly the second most popular after 7 and again for good reason. It looks fantastic even today with the remaster, the music is once again nearly perfect and a combination of the PS2's power and voice acting really added a lot of depth to character interactions. The worst I could say is that if this is your entry to the franchise, it can be a bit jarring going back to the older entries. If you like JRPGs, this should absolutely be on your list. --- Fan of metal? Don't mind covers? Check out my youtube and give me some feedback http://www.youtube.com/sircaballero ... He is intimidating, but also extremely petty. He actually does the stupid thing where people say why doesn't the villain just ______ and _____ the heroes? And he does.5 Definitely deserves to be in the conversation next to 4 and 6 when talking about the best 2D final fantasy. I'd also say part of why 5 doesn't get much love is do to the plot being more light hearted then 4 and 6. I've heard 5 is just as beloved as 4 and 6 in Japan but 5 lacks the nostalgia 4 and 6 gets in the west do to skipping the original release. 5 has one of the best/fun job systems where it lets you use abilities from another job you leveled up. For example you can give a monks bare fist ability to a white mage and still punch things just as hard as a monk when a heal isn't needed so the healer isn't just standing around doing nothing most of the time. As you said you'll be starting with 4 instead, I'll add that I think the 3D version is the best and it's a bit more challenging then the 2D version. --- Our intention is not to stifle political expression, political topics outside of CE will be banned, we are turning Current Events private. -TimmyQuivy ...
