First time any of these N64 like controllers has ever looked remotely sensible and appealing.

That simultaneously looks unappealing for N64 games and intriguing for any other games that use 6 buttons and a joystick.

Who the hell wants a plain black controller though? They seriously couldn't color the buttons? Are they afraid of infringing on Nintendo's design?

A solid bland matte color is part of the math that gets you $40 for a controller with build quality equivilant to a $70 controller.

I got mine today and tried it on RetroArch with Smash Bros.

It does require a remapping, but it wasn't hard to set it up. Basically you map the c-buttons to the right-analogue stick, and B to Y, and A to B (using standard Nintendo button placement). Then map the shoulder and trigger buttons like any modern controller. Of course if you'd prefer the GameCube style for Shield and Grab then you need to flip things around. It's not too hard for me to adjust as long as R and Z are on different planes.
