I wouldve remembered the red and yellow. The flexing. The pyro. The theme song: I am a real American blaring through the speakers like it meant something. And maybe back then it did. I remember being on the bus coming home from school, knowing I had recorded the pay-per-view WrestleMania VI. Hulk Hogan vs. The Ultimate Warrior. Title for title. The Intercontinental Championship and the WWF Championship on the line. I made it the whole day without hearing who won. Heart pounding. VHS tape waiting. Childhood peaking. And then one annoying dickhead on the bus yells: All right, Ultimate Warrior! Just like that spoiler delivered. Magic gone. Still, I ran home and watched it. Because that night, wrestling was myth. The battle of titans. The passing of the torch. And lets be honest Ultimate Warrior was my guy. That face paint. That chaos. That guitar riff shredding into your soul like a war cry. But he, too, turned out to be a right-wing fuck in the end. So its not just that these icons are dying. Its that theyre dying after showing us exactly who they were. And most of them? Were never heroes. Just performers we projected better things onto. That version of Hogan the childhood idol died long before July 24, 2025. What remained was a man who picked his final gimmick. And he picked MAGA. He didnt just lean into it. He wrapped himself in it. He became a walking talking promo reel for Trumpism. He wasnt cutting babyface promos for the people anymore he was backstage with the worst of them. Trump called him MAGA all the way in his death statement. Thats what stuck. Not the leg drops. Not the Hulkamania. Not even the 1-2-3. So no Im not mourning Terry Bollea. Im mourning the fact that we ever thought he was something more. I mourn the memory. I mourn what he couldve represented unity, resilience, hope. But I wont mourn the man who chose the wrong entrance music when it counted. So, I don't really see the wrestling personas and the actual person behind them as the same. Hulk Hogan is a character of the past. I liked him a lot. But he got old, and after his Wrestlemania match with Vince and the ridiculous 'Mr. America' gimmick that was pushed for some months afterwards, he was no longer relevant to my entertainment. What he did and his matches in the past are great memories, but again, to me, 'Hulk Hogan' has been dead for a long time already, just like many other retired wrestlers. This news has no bearing on that, or me, whatsoever. I'm not mourning a character that died long ago. The person Terry Bollea has been revealed through several sources and anecdotes to have been, to put very lightly, a terrible person. While I am not rejoicing about his death, I am not going to mourn him either. The only reaction I have for his death is the word "...Meh." and this post I'm writing, and I will likely forget about it completely in the next two days. PS. Might have been mentioned, but Ric Flair actually outlived the guy. Didn't expect that. PPS. The only real thing that gives me pause is that the guy was the same age as my dad.
