Most Asian foods

Well, it's certainly the most overrepresented. I don't think I've ever eaten any tbh, unless you count literally a croissant. But almost every movie where they go to a fancy restaurant, it's either explicitly a French restaurant or the waiter has the pencil mustache and drops random French words every sentence.

I dunno, maybe they're common in California? Or it's all a reference to one really famous restaurant that I'm just not classy enough to know anything about.

Japanese

Japanese is pretty overbought too, but I don't think that bubble is bursting anytime soon.

We are probably a lot more familiar with it, while other cuisines still seem more exotic and surprising.

Louis Quatorze was the first European royalty to champion farm fresh food. Then there is the fact that training as a French chef works well with learning other cuisines. French cuisine is more of a technique and philosophy than it is croq monsieur.

Id go with Japanese myself. I like it but its not worth the hype imo.

I don't even know what french food is aside from crepes and croissants. I just hear French restaurants are expensive and the chefs think they're royalty or some shit.

It's definitely up there for the top-end food category whether it deserves it or not. I don't know much about 5 star restaurants but if someone was to ask me what kind of food one served I'd automatically guess French cuisine.

French cuisine is held up on a certain pedestal largely in part because the concept of the modern restaurant as we think of it began in France. A lot of kitchen methods and techniques were codified by the French, including the brigade system.

It will always hold a certain level of prestige even if its not the best as far as the actual food goes

French have traditionally had access to lousy meat and produce, but a wealth of dairy. Most of their cooking is creating rich sauces with loads of cream and spices to cover the bland flavor. Italy has traditionally had awesome meat and produce, which is why everything focuses on being fresh and simple so as to bring out the best of the natural flavors.

I guess, but theyve had enough influence in Vietnamese, Cajun, and other cuisines that shouldnt go unappreciated. Ive never liked overrated as a concept anyways.

Hey. Sushi is not overrated. Sushi and smrrebrd are awesome in the breadth of actual eats and awesome for the presentation.

This is the simplest explanation for why French food is good. It's like Italian, but there's more fat.
