Technically already do. My eyesight is shit so I use glasses technology to compensate, and I've got a couple crowns so technology has replaced my teeth. I'm not a very good cyborg, but I am using technology to fix nature's flaws. As for the rest, my philosophy is basically pretty simple - I'd never replace anything for vanity (I don't believe in cosmetic plastic surgery) or just for the chance of improvement. But if something goes completely wrong I'm willing to replace it (like if my knees get so bad I need artificial joints). But I'm never touching the brain. If Elon ever figures out the neurochips he wants or everybody gets their own AI brain assistant, or if I wind up needing some kind of limb replacement that they want to wire directly into my brainstem, I'm hard passing. I'd rather be dead than let people fuck with my brain that way, even if that means I'm getting Alzheimer's. --- "Wall of Text'D!" --- oldskoolplayr76 "POwned again." --- blight family ... Replace my blood with something that does everything the organic stuff does but better, and makes anything that ingests it die a horrible horrible death! Well, except me of course. A cut anywhere along the digestive tract being lethal would hard to call an upgrade. That'd be first on the list. So long as it was a tested and verified technology, with risks and potential shortcomings well understood, I wouldn't mind parting with organic components in favor of technological upgrades. I don't buy that bunk about being human being some kind of super-special thing that you'd have to be an insane fool to give up, nor do I see tropes about immortality being an eternal torture as anything but sour grapes. So yeah, if I had the option, and so long as the technology was past the experimentation phase and its risks, limitations, and drawbacks were well understood, I wouldn't mind going full cyber at some point, though not before the technology was fully capable of recreating the functionality of everything it was replacing, within reason. That said, I'd rather die a natural death than roll the dice on okaying such a procedure while they were still ironing the kinks out of it. --- Every time you make Actual Intelligence look bad, Artificial Intelligence gets pushed that much harder. ... Shadowbird_RH posted... Replace my blood with something that makes anything that ingests it die a horrible horrible death! ...do you have a significant vampire problem where you live? If so, could you tell us where that is so we can avoid visiting? Shadowbird_RH posted... nor do I see tropes about immortality being an eternal torture as anything but sour grapes. Wait until you're older. It'll start making sense to you then. The human brain as we know it can only hold so much experience. And as you get older it absolutely gets harder and harder to relate to a world you can very much feel leaving you behind. At a certain point, many people eventually start feeling completely comfortable with the idea that the end is coming soon. Now multiply that by a thousand. All of the alienation and disconnection becomes misery. In theory, if we modify ourselves so significantly that we never have those problems, immortality might be far more appealing (in the same sense that eternal youth offsets a lot of the problems aging brings). But on the other hand, if we modify ourselves that significantly to the point where we're removing primal human instincts and mindsets, are we still human at that point? It's evolution, just guided via technology rather than at the whims of nature and biology. Which could be a good thing (do we even care about staying human when we can be better than human?), but it could also be a bad thing (we're essentially the first species in the history of the world capable of being afraid of evolving into something else). --- "Wall of Text'D!" --- oldskoolplayr76 "POwned again." --- blight family ...
