Wait, THAT'S WHY VIVI IS CALLED THAT?! Some kind of measuring thing?? I tried to see if I could make sense of the measuring, but starting from the bottom we have "IV V" which would be "4 5", then "V V" which would be "5 5", then "VI II" which would be "6 2", then finally "VIVI" which would be "6 6". This can't be imperial though, there's no way his hat stretches up to 6'6. But on the other hand, I guess I could see the top of his head being 4'5. I assume that whatever this is, it's more of an in-world measurement system his grandfather is using.

Most Japanese sources say his name is psudo-French for living and his last name is pseudo-French for bird. I don't think there is official word on that, but it does make some sense.

I like how the bird is there as a pointed reminder that Vivi's grandpa is basically checking to see if he's big enough to eat yet.

When I was a stupid child, I really hated how this game looked.

The easiest and IMO most plausible explanation is that VI VI = 6 6 = 66cm. Without his hat Vivi is between a third and a half of Garnet's and Steiner's heights, which would check out based on human heights. (I'm not considering Zidane, Freya, or Quina here since they're not human, nor Amarant because his posture makes it hard to tell his height, plus I'm not 100% certain he's human either.)

66cm is just barely over two feet tall. That "VIVI" on the wall is with the hat stretched out. That would put Vivi at practically one foot tall.

One horn. And I'm almost positive that the story mentions that when the queen saw the horn on Garnet's head as a baby, she had it removed.

They're not going to, and it's getting tiring seeing this narrative every time a square enix remake is brought up. Square is constantly remaking games, none of them are like ff7 except ff7. The ff7 remake series isn't actually a remake it's its own thing.

I guarantee you this is just a straight forward 1-1 remake and what you would expect of any other remake for a big game from that era. Major graphics upgrade. Modernized gameplay (for example the original game would be considered very slow/boring now and could use some tweaks). QOL improvement. Minor side stuff added to flesh out the game.

That beatrix character or whatever her name was will be playable in NG+

Yoshida is not working on any kind of Final Fantasy IX remake. Its a wonderful title, and many of us are fans of the original Final Fantasy IX. But its a pretty heavy game; I think it has more volume than Final Fantasy VII, so its scale is very different. I think we would have to be very careful and very aware if we were to handle Final Fantasy IX, commented the translator on behalf of Yoshi-P.Naoki Yoshida then joked that people speculated he would turn the new version into an action game, as happened with the controversial Final Fantasy XVI; however, he emphasized that if he were responsible for the remake, he would keep the turn-based combat.

Now you can argue that he's telling the truth and not being dishonest at all but you absolutely cannot make the claim that he's never mentioned FFIX in any capacity.

Thing is though, of course he would deny working on it until Squenix actually wanted to announce the project so you cannot actually take it particularly seriously when he says he's not working on it.

Everyone and their mom knows a remake is coming. He is teasing it but not making any official statements. This is pretty normal hype stuff.

anyway im fine with a 1/1. 9 isnt an action packed thriller like 7. Its more like a nice walk with friends, with some showers that make you run to a cafe to wait it out. Its pleasant and nicer to take in.

I DO hope they fixes the ATB speed, Trance should be triggered by a menu, and let Beatrix join the party. Also, give Freya just a bit more story. She is such a good character who gets pushed aside, especially after so much happens to her. Amarant is fine, his whole thing is that he has no identity, really. He has some secret cutscenes in the original that explains his history. Quina is fine too. She has a few really good scenes with Eiko and Vivi, an entire sidequest all for them, and is the best blue mage in the entire series. I also love their design. And I still think about I.So. Happy a lot.

The purpose of trance was that characters felt heightened tension and transformed when pushed to the brink.

This isnt how it works in gameplay either. It is just a meter that builds up over time and can be triggered by a level 1 goblin on a level 99 character. It needs to be reworked.

There is a zero percent chance it has anything to do with the original. 7 was far more in line with the shitty anime Squeenix and they still botched the tone every step of the way.

The people there right now do not know Final Fantasy, so yeah, no, I really dont want to see what they do with Zidane.

The core FF7 was all in the remake. Cloud being a dorky poser, Tifa being more of a shy girl next door, Aeris being a huge flirt (like in the jo script, not the bad english one), and more. The bad anime stuff was all the new sidequests and side characters, and yeah, I agree, they are all pretty bad and out of place.

With "bad anime stuff" new sidequests and characters (which im assuming is characters like chadley, kyrie, leslie, jules, madame m, chocobo sam etc.), I legit cannot understand what makes these characters so disliked/brushed off as too anime for my serious jrpg or whatever and out of place compared to the "anime stuff" that was in the original final fantasy 7 from the very beginning. (Johnny, priscilla and Mr. dolphin, don corneo, miyuki, reno and rude, dio, palmer and truck etc.)

This is seriously one of those things where I think some people's nostalgia for the original FF7 is so strong that they forget just how goofy n' anime the original game and some of it's characters was.

FFVII Remake is my favorite FF since FF10. I like the conbat, the expanded world and the changes in the story made it more interesting than just replaying FFVII yet again.

Hey, I love the goofy stuff in 7, and I like most of the changes in Remake. I dont like these characters because they arent interesting (save maybe Rosche and Leslie)), they are often part of the boring sidequests (Kyrie) or in the wrong game entirely (Chocobo Sam). I wouldnt dislike them as much if the effort was put in to make them the same kind of weird as Johnny and dolphin girl. But they currently feel like Nomura put rejected KH characters into them game instead, because they have that KH-esque habit of speaking around the point, being overly emotional, and being exposition dumps.

All I'm saying is that had we had the technology for the weird anime grunt and motions with fully voice-acted cutscenes for FF7 back with its original release the game would be jam-packed full of them. The characters and silly situations was definitely already there, lol. The weird npcs, the moogles silly times, like chadley can't even be blamed for being a weird android that is too much for FF7 since we always had a robot cat remote controlled from anywhere in the planet riding a fat moogle robot

Like some FF7 fans sort of blame advent children for it but the way I see it all the pieces was already in place. The og FF7 game is as anime and had a lot of light-hearted moments as jrpgs like tales of phantasia and star ocean 1.

Typically video game remakes even big budget ones are large update to graphics, tweak/modernize script/localization/story telling to enhance it, update gameplay, add QOL, add minor things to flesh out the game. That's more or less what every video game remake is, some variation of that. FF7 remake keeps being pointed to as an example what to do or what not to do. That game is an outlier and I think that's a complete waste of time thinking any game will mimic that or take some sort of lesson from it.

I agree with you, that's not a remake, not in any usual/accepted use of that term. I hate that it keeps being pointed to every time people talk about making other ff remakes, other square enix remakes as if that is some sort of inevitability and it can't be like literally every other remake outside of ff7. FF7 is an outlier and I don't think they're going to attempt another project like that, I think they grossly overestimated how many people would be engaged and excited for this project over the course of 10-15 years.
