Not anymore. Lately, they're functionally no different from remasters, just more expensive since they actually remade the engine and shit instead of just upscaling the textures.

Well like I said it's some variation of that and you get varying levels of budgets and effort. It depends.

Theoretically, what are we expecting would be different in this remake vs what the remaster a few years ago?

i might be trying to read too much into this, but the FF9 music thing seems to be going in order of the game, so i wonder if there could be an announcement after the music is finished

Typically video game remakes even big budget ones are large update to graphics, tweak/modernize script/localization/story telling to enhance it, update gameplay, add QOL, add minor things to flesh out the game. That's more or less what every video game remake is, some variation of that. FF7 remake keeps being pointed to as an example what to do or what not to do. That game is an outlier and I think that's a complete waste of time thinking any game will mimic that or take some sort of lesson from it.

On paper this is definitely what any video game remake should be yeah. The resident evil 1s and 2s, the metroid zero missions, persona 3 reloads and the trials of manas out there.

Lately though, there has been those "remakes" that is basically a glorified remaster. The exact same game someone would have played 20 years ago but now got some 2.5D slapped into it and maybe a few tweaks to the battle system and then call it a day. The super mario RPG switches and the star ocean 2 rs, =/

Star ocean 2 is one of my favorite jrpgs of all-time and it actually pissed me off that a modern remake was just that same game but with a few battle system tweaks. No new private actions (something I was greatly anticipating when I heard a remake was happening), no new playthrough option where you get to have every single star ocean 2 party member at once (a "canon" route basically. Since star ocean blue sphere has it story-wise where every star ocean 2 party member was a part of the group), no new story-beats like, period.

Wanted my star ocean 2 characters looking like a higher quality version of this:

Compared to what we actually got, just the PS1 sprites (which to be honest was never that great, but we dealt with it because its what we had) ripped and pasted on 2.5D. Whoa muh gurd, 2.5Dandklmksladn!!!!

To be honest though a FF8 remake on the scale of 7's would be awesome.

That improvement characters like aerith, barret and red 13 got?........I really want to see the same for squall, quistis, irvine, rinoa. Maaaaan does squall and rinoa need it badly. That empty FF8 world would benefit with things actually being in it/padding/whatever.

Also I'm just saying I want to active reload the gunblade like I am playing gears of war.
