Sonic and Link are very close. Link dominates the gaming landscape, but Sonic's movies have really been a shot in the arm for his overall cultural relevance. If the LoZ movie is successful, he'll leapfrog back over Sonic.

Also the gap between Sonic/Link and Cloud/Sephiroth is much bigger than the gap between Cloud/Sephiroth and the bottom 3.

I agree with that generally, but one problem: where's Samus

(under Cloud and Sephiroth, but still above the gap before Snake? That probably sounds right to me.)

Honestly I'd probably slot Samus under Cloud, above Sephiroth. Sephiroth's stock is struggling more than Cloud's is.

Another gap needs to go in between Mega Man and Crono here imo, Snake and Mega Man are still kind of limping along by having occasional releases and marketing here and there, and they're at least in Smash - Crono is basically abandoned

I was having a big work dinner the other day and my colleague's 3-year-old son was watching Sonic Prime on his mother's phone. One of the kids I teach came in with non-uniform and was wearing a Sonic shirt. He's super relevant again.

I mean, OG FFVII Sephiroth defies all convention in being tied at the hip with the hero

I'd argue Remake Sephiroth is a clear step down from the original while Remake Cloud is every bit as good and better in some ways

No, I reject this. Metroid Dread was getting GOTY talk and Metroid Prime 4 is coming out in a few months. She's one of the original Smash characters. MGS might be a series that lives on more in like online meme culture and stuff but Snake hasn't had a new game in a while and Metal Gear is kind of on life support in general (I know Delta is coming out but that's it). And that's even assuming people know which games do and don't star the actual Solid Snake.

Raiden is more relevant with the younger crowd than Solid Snake is these days. Rising has been meme'd on to high heaven (which is extremely appropriate considering the game's plot).

Eh, REVENGEANCE very much exists in a bubble. I'm not sure it has much cache in general.

And I get Metroid is a critical darling and it has its circle of fans but I do think it's generally less popular among the general public than among gamers like us.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Solid Snake hasn't appeared in a non-Smash video game since MGS4 in 2008. It doesn't take much to have more cache than that.

Smash Ultimate was SO close in having all Noble Nine members.

I dunno, I might just be way off base here. I keep forgetting how long it's been since Metal Gear has had anything major drop. Phantom Pain was a decade ago now.

Looking at YouTube views (bad metric, I know), the Prime 4 reveal trailer has about 1.2 million views and the MGS3 Remake has about 960k.

I think Metal Gear does have a little more presence in the internet zeitgeist, but not so much that it makes up the gap between Metroid thriving as a franchise right now. And Snake's not even in MGS3, so...

Solid Snake matters more than Samus as a presence in their respective games and I think that matters quite a bit
