Water is my usual, though I have picked the others in a couple gens.

Fire > Water > Grass

Either water or it depends on the designs.

I usually went with fire types, though I missed gens 4 and 5 so I didn't have to deal with picking a damned dirty ape or a pig. When it came to gen 7 I picked Poplio np after I saw Primarina.

Water consistently has good designs imo

Fire is a fairly rare type and usually the fire starter out does anything comparable that you can catch.

The water starters are usually "fine" but it has to compete with one of the absolute kings of the game Gyarados to get a slot in the party. Even if you're tired of Gyarados the games feature so many good water types there just isn't the desire to pick one up. Unless it's something outstanding like Swampert or Greninja.

Grass is a bad type, if bug and ice are the two worst types grass is a solid #3 worst when it comes purely to an in game story play through.

I usually go from fire to water each gen, the only times I've done grass are BW and SV

I just pick the cutest one.

Fire! Fire! Charmander was my first pokemon ever and fire is still my favorite type.

With that said there has definitely been a good deal of fire starter designs I think looks dumb compared to the others.

I picked totodile as my pokemon gold starter because I thought he looked cooler than chicorita and cyndaquil.

Fire chicken and flaming monkey were cool as hell so I picked them in ruby and diamond.

Flaming pig was weak compared to the samurai penguin (that.........goes on all 4s for his final evolution. Seriously, what the hell? Its so lame, lol) and the smug grass snake thing.

My mind is kind of a blur for all the others post black and white. I do remember picking the one that becomes greninja in pokemon X, the grass owl and the james bond water starter for their games but I completely forgot which pokemon games they were from.

Grass = 1 + 1 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 13 points
Fire = 2 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 18 points
Water = 3 + 2 + 1 + 3 + 3 + 1 + 3 + 1 = 17 points

Looks like the Water-type starter is my favorite in the most gens, but based on the points, the Fire-type starters have a very slight edge over the Water-type ones in how much I like them overall. Plus, my #1 favorite starter line (the Litten line) is Fire-type, so that's also in their favor too.

So fire > grass > water I guess. Some of them were really close.

I always pick the Grass starters when a new game comes out... and while they may not be my favorite by the end, I think I end up liking a mix of them...

So I voted Grass to make it easier...

Was always partial to fire types, in early gens the fire starter seemed like it was always miles ahead of any other fire type outside of legendries. Grass was second for similar reasons as fire, but due to them sharing a lot type effectiveness with water they were less useful. Water was always third, just seems like they always had enough decent water types that even if you went through half the game to get one/ or had to switch them half way through the run to something better there was more choices when it came to other water types.

Most of my experience is from the first 3 gens including FR and LG. From what i have played of DS games and switch games it seems to have gotten better so not sure what I would pick now, I played the switch games late enough in the gen that you could get the the other starters free from pokemon home for those games so while i never finished the playthroughs of those games I had all 3 starters for the playthroughs.

I always pick the Fire-starter.

...Even if I end up liking one of the others better (as was the case with Serperior and Decidueye).

Fire starters are almost universally ass. I like the diversity of grass a lot, and Venasaur is my favourite of the lot, but most of the best ones are water, like Feraligtr, Swampert and Empoleon.

Fire. As someone else said, there are way more options for water/grass.

Exception is Turtwig. Torterra is awesome.
