Huh

Think of hit points as time paid off for learning how to take a hit, doing your cardio, eating the right foods.
Doing more damage as learning where certain creatures have weakspots.
Paying better attention to your surroundings from that time a log swung out from a tree, and shattered your ribs.
Not hitting on everything that has a pulse with the worst pickup lines this side of an Andy Taint scam.

Try not to get killed by them.

All I know is whatever Chrono Cross was supposed to be it was the worst leveling system (only bosses let you level except also stats increase after other battles a little sometimes until they stop for every level, encouraging you to fight mooks until you stop getting a state increase after which you should avoid all battles).

I think Mega Man Battle Network did well by not leveling you up, but giving you customization items to upgrade Mega Man with buffs and new functions, just like upgrading a PC.

Of course like everything in that series, explaining it is way cooler than how it is actually acknowledged in the game.

Battle Network is just really great in general.

Boils down to execution, and how society handles it, since I doubt xxxxxxxxx of min-maxers would turn out well, nor only a handful of them lording everything due to caps are restricted due to yyy.

The ideas were really ahead of its time and makes me want a modern remake, seeing all the ideas fully fleshed out. Having a PET would be really cool. Surprised nobody has made anything as strong as it yet,

if they arent trying to be funny, I cant believe they ever expect people to take them seriously

I quite like it, especially if it's incorporated into the story in some way. Like Prey has neuromods and the entire story is about how they're this revolutionary technology that allows you to instantly learn any skill, but the downside is that if this skill is ever removed, you instantly forget everything that's happened since you acquired it.

It also allows the characters in the game to interact with the mechanic whereas a typical RPG leveling system is usually ignored by the narrative. System Shock 2 has a similar technology to Prey with cyber modules. It's not nearly as focused on, but the fact that there is an in-universe explanation means SHODAN can explicitly reward you with them. And in one instance where you disobey her, she can take them away from you.

Soul swords are one of the more logical executions of this.

Series where fantasy dungeons with monsters and appear in our world are becoming more popular too, and they often have level mechanics as a thing.

TBF, I would welcome such a world.

Hate it. It always makes me think the game dev doesn't understand the concept of getting better at something by doing.

Kingdom Hearts always has a new justification for Sora to not be as strong in each new game.

The Lumina Converter from Clair Obscur Expedition 33 basically does this.

How about enemy leveling to match yours?

I rarely see in-universe justifications for leveling up flopping, so I chose that it's cool.
