I would probably join a game now that we have gotten to May. I think some of the last attempts have been slightly too ambitious in terms of player numbers for a revival, but 11-13 people should be possible based on the latest attempt. As long as you tag all the regulars from it was a thing because many are likely to miss a sign up topic entirely.

How feasible would it be for someone to run an anonymous game?

Someone could create a batch of accounts with some sort of naming theme get a few karma on them and then distribute the accounts when the roles go out.

The benefits would be two-fold. The accounts would be stuck on 50/75/100 posts per 24 hours (or whatever the limit is) *and* we wouldn't spend as much time trying to solve the game based upon individual player quirks or getting hung up on our past experiences with specific players.

Not sure if it would be worth the effort but having an anonymized game would be of interest to me.

well if all the people in the game actually are low on free-time then the idea is they only post a bit each day and it's manageable

if there are people who can still post 24/7 then yes it'd become worse

We have had anonymous games, such as that Death Note game where scum had to figure out who the players were to kill them. I think they've all been done on other sites like proboards though

Is this really how people want to play mafia?

In my recent experience (1 game a year) what I've seen is:
Day 1 enthusiasm is low (some are excited but no one really takes it seriously)
Day 2-4 is serious
Day 5 most active/interesting players are killed already (remember, an active townie is a power role)
Day 6-10 slow bleeding until the game ends in some bullshit, everyone swears to never play this god damn game again

Solution: 9-10 players max, shorter games that end by Day 6, take Day 1 actually seriously. Post limits aren't a bad idea since it does suck to go through 200 posts of back and forth, but that's also part of the fun.

I always liked this idea because of the way everyone waits to the last minute of day 1 to care.

But also any day killing should trigger the full 48 hour day 1.

D1 is incredibly important for reads later on so I think it's important to have some good discussion during it. It's also why corrik/ulti strategies of being silent D1 are objectively correct since it can really only hurt you to post in D1 as scum. It also greatly influences the N1 kill. But if no one wants to take it seriously then keep it to a minimum.

I take d1 seriously and my catch rate is well above pure RNG levels on d1. Particularly when I have another town player or two in the game who are also taking d1 seriously.

Maybe it's because I've only really played B8 mafia, but I don't super understand how post limit games work. Like, sure there's less back and forth fluff to read through, but that just means there's even less activity, when activity is frequently a thing we struggle with.

Like, having post limits doesn't guarantee higher post quality. So less active people that struggle to post because they don't have a lot of thoughts on the game or strong reads are still gonna struggle to post because they don't have strong reads.

I'm down to try a game with heavy post limits just to see how it turns out though.

Post limits really mess with certain player's ability to process because they're used to making points and realizations in sequences instead of walls.

The bigger issue isn't post ceilings. It's the arbitrary post floors that often accompanies them. For example, Mafiascum has a 10 posts a day floor. Virtually every game there, 1/3 of the playerbase posts 10-15 times a day and almost none of it is content. The rules consider them "Active", even though they're not actually doing anything meaningful. Example: There's a specific player named Not_Mafia who's been there for years and almost never content posts in any game he ever joins. His very existence just boils down to when town finally decides enough is enough and votes him off.

But as far as their rules go, he is an "Active and contributing member" in every game he joins, even if nearly every post he ever makes is deliberately posted to interrupt or derail the game. The other people who sit around doing nothing all game? "Active and contributing member". It's awful.

Yeah I don't think the rules can fix bad players, the host and community should handle that. But given a less active community, you do have to scrape the bottom of the barrel and take what you can get. In that case, it's possible that rules could prevent some of the worst play. I haven't seen it work myself but I get the idea.

It's also related to a lesser extent the same problem MU has where some concurrent games have crossover.

My experience with MU is it's common to find the same players in 4 games at the same time and inactive in all of them.

Hosting was really good. I liked your rules posts they felt concise and relevant and encouraged the right mentality effectively. I like to think they at least partially contributed to everyone chilling.

My only issue was the balancing but I already told you some suggestions and it's also not super relevant if you're not going to be hosting much
