17 players, role heavy (each role has at least 2 abilities), 48/24 phases.

No post limits, but post count has been slow-ish in that site lately so it should be doable even if you have a job/school.

Started watching Traitors (US S3) and it's a pretty decent mafia-like so far. Having so many survivor players is pretty funny. It's 3 scum among 20 though which seems pretty difficult, even if everyone is vanilla.

US one in particular is bad. Australia S1, NZ and UK are all pretty decent but moreso from a reality show PoV than an actual mafia PoV. It's unfortunately host-rigged to ensure it lasts the exact number of days needed to fill out the contracted runtime.

I like the game design overall (despite being heavily manipulated) and I also like the characters since I know them from other shows. But everyone's gameplay was just so bad. And the editing de-emphasizes the most interesting mafia-like part (the roundtable convos). What I like about Survivor is that they've figured out such a good formula for editing that even bad gameplay can make for good TV, but that definitely didn't apply here.

I don't think I could ever watch it, as a fan of mafia. I mean you say they start with 3 out of 20 but didn't I hear that when one traitor dies, the traitors get to recruit a new traitor? So the strategy gets warped because apparently (again, from what I heard) you don't *want* to vote out a traitor early.

Also I heard traitors only win if they're alive at the end (and same with townies?) so in practice it sounds more like a game of Survivor anyway. Mafia is a team game, you should win even if you died. The traitors are incentivized to take out their own allies?

Yes to all of that. Recruitment completely ruins the game from what I can tell (and it does in mafia too tbh). It ended up being 5 of 24 that were scum, which is much more balanced given that everyone's vanilla. And yeah you only get the money if you're alive at the end. Both the traitors and the townies are incentivized to be last one standing. So even if you know it's all townies left, you're supposed to continue killing people until it's down to two, and there's a whole sequence in the finale for that (though it's very scummy if you don't vote to stop killing).

The US version is so horrendously scripted it's hardly worth watching

International versions are pretty good from what I've seen.
