My issue with Luke's combat is everything jusy feels sluggish and gets easily kinda stunned out of combos. Add in that the other pure melee option (Guy) is just better in every way and he just loses any sort of role he can fill (which is basically just power hitter/self healer). Jade and Ansie at least fill in the niche roles. Like I can't think of another mc that gets as outclassed by the rest of the cast as much as Luke even with the came catering more towards melee via ad skills. Luke is perfectly fine and you can solo the entire game with him on the hardest difficulty (which I have), but Guy is just cracked. His normals are much faster, his artes all combo into each other very easily, and he doesn't have a single bad arte outside of stuff you have to go WAY out of your way to get. Luke hits notably harder, but a lot of his stuff is way more situational and prone to dropping combos. Not ideal when the primary purpose of a melee character in a Tales game is to keep enemies away from the casters. Luke also doesn't really have an arte that you want to use that has a good Water FoF change, so you'll have to dedicate a shortcut to that. If I had to rank the playable characters (in the context of a full party and by the endgame), it would be: Tear (if you don't have her in the party you're trying to lose) Guy Anise Natalia/Luke (her healing is about as valuable as a second melee fighter protecting casters) Jade Anise CAN become the best character in the game, but it's an absolute fucking headache to achieve. Luke is also temporarily the best character in the game later on. The characters don't set themselves apart from each other for a while, though. That turned out to be a flat-out lie, but Luke never could have predicted that. It'd be like if I put a big pink button in front of you and told you pressing it would make candy fall from the ceiling, but when you press it, it actually launches nuclear missiles. Would you be responsible for those missiles? Of course not! You couldn't have predicted that outcome! You didn't even know launching missiles was on the table! The only information you had was that you were gonna get some candy! It's not even fair to say he should've talked to the others about it first. Recall that "the others" are a group of people who have by this point spent two whole adventures doing nothing but berating and/or patronizing him. He owes them nothing. Also, he's mentally seven years old. Also also, the one person he trusts more than anyone told him not to tell anyone about it. ~~While he came off like a brat, fundamentally, he was right: it wasn't his fault, at all. Van holds 100% of the blame for what happened to Akzeriuth. Luke needs to acknowledge what he did (however unintentionally) and what was done to him, and just stammering that it wasn't his fault shows a lack of maturity and willingness to grow.
