Huh? I don't speak Trump someone translate
Hes saying Bush 1 lost because of Ross Perot. RP pulled what would be the right libertarian element of the Republican party then. You then add Bill Clintion being hip and 12 years of republicans people wanted a change. There was also a recession somewhere in there. I wish I was paying attention back then. I remember the No new taxes thing. I dont know how much effect it had. I was just 16-18 during that period. Politics wasnt really on my mind.

Ross Perot pulled basically evenly from both other candidates

I had to re-read it multiple times and my best attempt to interpret that is, he's OK politically speaking because unlike HW, he can't run again in four years so he wouldn't have to face the consequences directly. However, the Republicans in Congress would and yes, Democrats would run a ton of ads attacking the Republicans for that because that's what they did to HW in 1992 and was quite effective.

Also, the only other thing I can think of is that Trump may not be a hard ideologue on certain issues so maybe he really doesn't care if the rich get taxed a little bit more, especially if he can get something that's more important to him in return. He's accepted a bad Omnibus deal before in 2018 mostly just to get some extra defense spending and hardly any of his border wall built.

But why did he even post all that in the first place? I have no idea lol. There was no conversation among Republicans raising taxes on the rich anyway.

Yeah, no to the majority of that. He is planning on running in 2028. They really are serious about these loopholes to let him run again. And he already has raised taxes on everybody with his tariffs. And nothing he says or does loses him any votes. And he's claiming the tax thing wasn't what hurt HW, it was Perot.

It's mostly just his standard rambling BS of excuses that he does for everything. He is the one that was urging Mike Johnson yesterday to raise taxes on the wealthiest and to close the carried interest loophole. So it could cover up for all the massive losses he's been giving us lately. After this was reported on he's doing the "I'm fin with it, but I didn't ask for it, and also it's the Democrats fault if it happens, but if it does happen and most people like it then that was my idea" dance he loves to do.

It's an interesting conflict between the various competing interests in the administration.

But given how susceptible to bribery Trump is, and how easy crypto has made bribing him?

Not happening.

HW was mocked relentlessly over "Read my lips" when he raised taxes during his term. That's what he's referring to. Clinton won the election because of it.

I think he's trying to say if taxes are raised a little bit, "the left" will just want to raise them more. "Read my lips, no new taxes", but then there were new taxes.

Which, well, as a proud member of the "radical left", that's true. A tiny increase in taxes on the wealthy isn't enough.
I think it's legit that he doesn't want people to make fun of him for doing what Republicans aren't supposed to do.

You know, like that one user who changed his sig to the CJayC quote about not merging with Gamespot when GameFAQs merged with Gamespot.

The stupid thing, aside from the fact that this is a really stupid reason not to do what's best for the country, is that people are making fun of him anyway. Might as well be for doing something good. But of course, this buffoon's brain just doesn't work at all, so.

You know his base doesn't understand a damn thing he's saying, but as long as he sprinkles in buzzwords like "radical left", they'll clap like trained Seals.

It's a little clearer what he's trying to do here after seeing this article. Right now it's uncertain if the Republicans will be able to extend the soon-to-expire 2017 tax cuts because to do so they would have to cut quite a bit of spending. The main target for cuts is Medicaid but some Republicans in competitive districts are hesitant to vote for a bill that would cut Medicaid benefits.

So it seems like Trump, in an awkward and rambling way, is trying to have it both ways and frame it so that he can declare it a win whether the eventual bill keeps the current tax cuts for the rich in place or not.

Republicans: If we raise taxes, rich people will flee to other countries.

Also Republicans: Other countries are only able to afford universal healthcare because of high taxes.

Rich people will flee to other countries.
But not the highly qualified and educated federal workers we cut that we expect to work manual labor.

Also Republicans: you don't need 30 dolls for your kids. Get 2. But rich people definitely need their dozens of yachts.
