Limited Run Games has shared the release date for the long-awaited return of everyone's favourite gaming gecko, Gex. The Gex Trilogy launches on Switch (and other consoles) on 16th June 2025, and it's obviously getting a rather lavish special edition.

So, uh, yeah, let's talk about that collector's edition. Well, there's two of them, but we're mostly referring to the 'Tail Time Edition', a $199.99 bundle that includes among other expected things a 36 inflatable doll of Gex. Yes, we weren't messing around in the headline.

A similarly surprising inclusion is the Collector's Box featuring art by Final Fantasy artist Yoshitaka Amano. Not a collaboration we were expecting, but it's pretty cool. Otherwise, it's your standard pin, trading cards, statue, soundtrack, and steelbook.

$199.99 is a lot of money, but you can get the steelbook, poster, a soundtrack selection, and a retro box alongside the game for $74.99, or just grab the standard release for $39.99.

Blow-up dolls aside, let's talk about what the Gex Trilogy contains. You've got Gex, Gex: Enter the Gecko, and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko all bundled together with various quality of life improvements. You can save anywhere in all three games and rewind in case you make a mistake. Plus, the latter two games support native 16:9 widescreen and have been retooled to work with full 360 analogue controls. No more eight-directional movement!

I appreciate how they're preserving these games but I really hope there's a feature to disable the PS1 texture warping in Enter the Gecko and Deep Cover Gecko.

Is there any reason that would be present? That was a quirk of the ps1 hardware. Unless these are being emulated instead of being a native port.

They're using LRG's Carbon Engine which is just a multi-emulator. ModernVintageGamer from YouTube is one of its developers. I'm no expert but the PS1 emulation they're doing seems to be a lot less capable than one of the most popular emulators which has the ability to disable the texture warping.

This. The American dub sounds awful compared to the legendary voices of Leslie Phillips and Danny John-Jules. If it's American only, then I won't be buying.

Very strange that they're cashing in on both gex and bubsy at the moment. The psx gex games are at least pretty all right collecathons though, so he's got that going for him.

I've never played the Gex games. Will they hold up as decent games without nostalgia?

My favorite was the first Gex!

They were reviewed kind of averagely when they released. The humor in them is heavily dated.

Enter the Gecko is fantastic. Gex is passable. Deep Cover Gecko is utter garbage.

What are you supposed to do with an inflatable Gex doll?

seeing Amano draw Gex is one of the most surreal things in official game art I've seen in a while

The controls were always my biggest pain point when playing Enter and Deep Cover. Glad fixing them is one of the main points.

100% both of them

I'm excited. I know they were average, but I still had a lot of fun with them as a kid. Gex 3 is the best one IMO, actually pretty polished. The first one is OK, but the level design is not great and it feels like a slog at points. The second game is very average.

They're all incredibly dated. I would argue the jokes weren't funny at the time, but that was part of the charm.

The parodies are all incredibly shallow.
