Strong word, but it does make me feel that strongly. Combat, characters, that damn soundtrack, and the story most of all. I can understand how not everyone will like the direction the story goes in but I loved it and thought the story and its message went a beautiful, very emotional way. I'm still just clearing up a bunch of things in post-game, not ready to put it down yet and considering a NG+ to pick up foreshadowing/hints I missed the first time.

It seems like people are mostly complaining about just one part at the end of act 1. I think long term it's not a big deal.

I do feel like that maybe Maelle should have just been the main character the whole time. This doesn't feel like Verso or Gustave's story.

or at least be consistent and control her the way you controlled Gustave & Verso during act 3

I hope that the game influences the direction of the genre heading into the future. Other than DQ, i dont think theres been a lot of games to capture that feeling of the classic jrpg in the last couple decades

I can see that. It was definitely a shock, the end of act 1. I'm guessing they did it this way to help with the feeling of the shift in focus after Act 1 and especially after Act 2. Maybe? lol. Or they just wanted to go, "Look, Charli Cox protag. ;)"

I'd love if it did something like that. I like modern JRPGs but having a classic JRPG with modern QoL has been an addicting combo for me in the form of this game.

I beat the game already so I know why they did it but obviously can't say why but the protagonist shift will make sense by the end of the game.

I'd say they didn't have to kill Gustave technically but him being a protagonist was always a misdirection away from the real protagonists.

It just sucks that the traversal is such garbage though. Like, the music is amazing, the visuals are amazing, the story is amazing, the battle system is amazing. Then you get the Gestral beach games and I wonder how drunk and stoned they were when they came up with them. "Hey guys, you know the jumping and physics that are barely functional, but good enough for how they are used on the main path? Let's design complex courses around them without improving the mechanic at all"

Fortunately they are a very small part of the experience, I just wish my reaction to seeing a new Gestral Beach area was excitement rather than "lol nope" and turning around.

The only rewards for those beach courses are swimsuits that look terrible.

Well except for Monoco but point is you very clearly don't need to do them at all.

It looks like it should be a AAA action-adventure, but being turn-based seemed so unusual for a game with these visuals.

Oh I agree completely. Very small part of the experience, and nothing aside from cosmetics which is why I wouldn't knock off any points for it (like I do for FF VII Rebirth). But still, it IS part of the game so I think it's fair to criticize it. Especially when it sticks out like a sore thumb with how good everything else is.

Amazing game which is elevated by the quality of it's artistic components. Some nitpicks here and there, but dont really detract from the overall experience. I think THIS IS what people want from a jrpg in terms of gameplay and story presentation.

I can only imagine what they could've done with a bigger team and higher budget. I think my main complaint are the environments. Yes, theyre beautiful, but can also feel bland in design. Like very "procedurally generated" for the assets.

But after finishing the game last night I can really say its an all time great and pushes the boundaries for what the genre can do.

Its clumsy, cause the physics are not really made for that, but like you say theyre just silly minigames with no reward of consequence. I did appreciate some platforming here and there during some levels.

No way they weren't self-aware about how clunky those areas are and was done as some kind of troll. Oddly enough the one I was seething over most was the wall climbing one. Aaaggh.

I felt the same way when I saw the trailer. Just somehow I knew this was going to be an experience. Last time a trailer made me feel that way was the original Dishonored.

Is there like a focus group study stating that people are more engaging when jrpgs have slanted menu look?

Around 30 for the story and another 30+ for side content. The side content is treated with the same love as the main quest including full cutscenes, so it's worth it.
