How would this work in practice? Overseas sellers only or even stuff about to enter US warehouses in the next few weeks? I would assume the tariff has been passed on by Amazon and isn't being paid upfront by the buyer like Temu or Shein seems to do.

Loblaws Canada has tariff signage on US junk, it's quite lovely to see, like Christmas cheer ornaments!

This just seems like necessary transparency to me. Amazon ships items from all over the world, their customers need to know how much of what they're paying is taxes and tariffs just like they need to know how much of it is shipping. It wouldn't make sense to omit that info.

So how long before Amazon backs down?

That's exactly my thoughts. When i pay for things, i like my fees and taxes spelt out and itemized.

There might be an impulse to counterpoint and say that we don't typically care about how the price of gas is broken down. But we should.

Because if we did, we wouldn't have people cheering on gas below $2 in the middle of a global pandemic or a recession.

Disclosing tariffs would be too transparent and honest and would destroy the dystopian theme hes worked so hard to cultivate.

But Im confused because I thought the whole point of this was forcing people to buy American made shit. By showing tariffs wouldnt that convince people to do what he wants?

Amazon is actually making a solid, informative, and very pro-consumer move here.

This is only for Amazon Haul, not the main site.

In Europe, it's pretty standard for price tags to be like "item price: X, of which tax is Y"

Amazon already backed down. They said they're not doing it, and they were only considering it for Haul.

This will be news to a lot of Americans, Trump included, who seem to believe that tariffs are something that foreign governments pay.

They denied the reports saying they ever were. They said it was only under consideration for Amazon Haul, not the main site, and isn't happening.

I think this was more of a signal in hopes of other companies to implement. Amazon doesn't want to lead the charge.

It is a smart way to show WHO exactly is going to pay the tariffs...and it ain't China.

It's all the same, really. Both the producer and the consumer lose. And the lose more than the government gains. Whether that's in the form of paying more or selling fewer units doesn't really matter.

Let's say an item receives a $100 tariff. If the producer pays $100 to export it, they're going to want to sell less of them. Supply and demand are now out of equilibrium and the sale price shifts higher to reflect that.

If the consumer pays $100 to import it, they're going to want to buy less of them. Supply and demand are now out of equilibrium and the sale price shifts lower to reflect that.

In theory, the equilibrium price plus the customer's portion of the tariff is equal regardless of who pays the tariff or even if the split it.

The whole thing about who pays it was always just a distraction from the fact that the US Government is forcing the commodity out of its equilibrium and losing equity to dead loss all to pass on a portion of what was taken from the people to the corporations.
