SACRAMENTO Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that California has officially overtaken Japan to become the worlds fourth-largest economy, according to newly released data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).

According to the IMFs 2024 World Economic Outlook data released yesterday, and BEA data Californias nominal GDP reached $4.1 trillion, surpassing Japans $4.02 trillion, and placing California behind only the United States, China, and Germany in global rankings. Californias GDP figure is based on the latest state-level GDP data from the BEA.

Outperforming the nation

Californias economy is growing at a faster rate than the worlds top three economies. In 2024, Californias growth rate of 6% outpaced the top three economies: U.S. (5.3%), China (2.6%) and Germany (2.9%). Californias success is long-term the states economy grew strongly over the last four years, with an average nominal GDP growth of 7.5% from 2021 to 2024.

Germany and Japan was also reconstructed by US/Allied deals. Japan's manufacturing ascendance was propped by American deals. This is what happens when you lose, agree to surrender terms, then agree to deals to reconstruct your society while promising to have no military at all.

Unfortunately that might not last long. With Trump in charge the US is likely going to fall a lot and a casualty of that will be California as well. Unless California can keep those tariff deals they've been considering that are technically not allowed.

It is kind of shaped like Japan too. When it breaks off from the rest of North America and becomes an island it will be just like Japan.

IIRC Marshall Plan saw to it that Europe's reconstruction was built on pouring capital into West Germany so that it became an industrial powerhouse. Greece brought this up back in the 2010s as a response to Germany imposing austerity programs on them.
